Many modern parents struggle with the decision of where and when to take their child(ren) to the dentist, often-times due to their own personal dental fears or knowing they only want the very best care for their little one. The pediatric dentists at Atkins, Maestrello, Miller and Associates and the orthodontists at Richmond Orthodontics have teamed up to provide our community with great dental care and now call themselves RPDO, Richmond Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics.
The owners, who have been treating children for a combined 150 years, thought long and hard about the idea of a combined childrens dentistry model before they knew it really needed to happen for the Richmond Community. Modern parents have many important decisions to make for their families, and finding the very best dentist and orthodontist for their child(ren) is on that list. As dentists, we witness the struggle modern parents face surrounding dental and orthodontic care for their children. Which dentist should I take my child to? When should I start taking my child to the dentist? When should I start thinking about braces? What if me, my spouse, or my friend want braces too?Will the dental office locations and office hours fit with my day-to-day schedule?RPDO hopes to take the guesswork out of all of these questions.
RPDOs mission is to provide our community with life-defining, quality oral care in a caring environment. The two practices have been serving the dental needs of hundreds of thousands of children in the Richmond community for over 100 years.
RPDOs goals are rooted in connecting with others and helping all members of the community receive the dental care they deserve. Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists enjoy empowering their patients, from infancy to teenage/adult years and encouraging them to learn and grow in confidence, which supports long term, healthy behaviors. We view it as our responsibility to maintain an ongoing conversation about dental health with our community so that they have a lasting impression on how to care for themselves.
After your babys first birthday, our pediatric dentists will help your family navigate the world of going to the dentist for the first time. We will then teach your child(ren) that going to the dentist does not need to be a fear-filled, nerve-racking experience, but instead a learning, joy-filled, and rewarding visit. By the time your child(ren) are ready for braces, our dentists will have already been in conversation with you, which will make the transition smooth, patient-focused, and minimize the time your child will spend in braces. Our orthodontists spend much of their time treating adults as well as children, making it even more convenient for families. We recognize your family time is valuable and we hope to make your decision of where to take your child an easy, stress-free, and exceptional experience.

As another parent stated below, the exact same thing happened to my child. Not sure the age of the other one but mine is a little bit older and already deals with disabilities that I made them aware of. I came here because it was closer to home. The guilt I feel over this. My child is not in any physical pain but emotionally they are depressed and traumatized.

Dr. Liz & her team are amazing...they engaged w/ my kids, asking them Qs to keep them occupied, being silly w/ them, & helping them when they were scared. When the little one needed to use the bathroom and I was helping the other in the chair, another team member came out of the back to help, which I so appreciated. They even sent my kids handwritten "happy notes" afterwards telling them they had done such a good job and they were proud of them! Love this place :)

My son had a GREAT experience there. We came in for a concern. He was thoroughly checked, and left having a great visit. The dental assistant was great and the dentist was super sweet and very helpful. Thank you Chelsea and Dr. Ray!

completely ridiculous they will deny seeing your child if you miss an appointment and don't have a doctor's note within 30 days.

Although the doctor was great the hygienists at the mechanicsville location are mean and unwelcoming. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They are unorganized and some of them don't need to be working with children with the hostile manner in which they carry themselves. They took the X-rays of my sons mouth very roughly and got an attitude with me when he was found to have a few cavities as if I'm a bad mother because of it. These women all in the office seem like the gossiping and rude type that don't like their job and I will not be returning. Be careful leaving your child with them unattended because they don't have any manners with the children. A couple of them should have picked a different career.

Everyone here was wonderful! My four year old loved the bright fun atmosphere and the friendly staff! She is a first time patient here after a disappointing experience at her previous dentist. I was also very impressed with the hygienists and dentist kind demeanor. They were very good with her and made me feel relaxed and welcome during her exam and x-rays. At no point did I feel that my presence was unwanted even with my many questions/comments! The treatment plan and procedures were easy to understand and explained well. I appreciated being informed about problems that may come up and what I could do to expedite the process. I will definitely be bringing all my children here from now on!
