Rhode Island Hospital was built through the generosity of the community, beginning in 1857 with a bequest by Moses Brown Ives to establish a fund for a hospital in Rhode Island. In 1868, the founders of Rhode Island Hospital gathered on the hospital grounds to dedicate the new hospital, founded to serve the citizens of our state as its name indicated. Bradley Hospital isthe nation's first psychiatric hospital devoted exclusively to children and adolescents.Today, children who struggle with behavioral and psychiatric health issues have more options than ever before. With the support of our donors we arepioneering pediatric mental health care, education, and research. For the children and families whose lives are affected by mental illness, Bradley is a life-saving place of healing that offers treatment and care that isnt available anywhere else. Beyond pushing the boundaries of research, education and care, Bradley Hospital is working to remove the stigma of mental illness which too often prevents people from seeking treatment.

Founded and funded by Newporters in 1873, Newport Hospital began as a 12-bed cottage hospital on donated land. In an era when most of the sick were cared for at home, a hospital was deemed a necessity for those whose homes were elsewhere: fishermen, military, and others who worked the bay and ocean. Since its inception Newport Hospital has kept pace with advances in medical technology and the needs of the community. Due to the generosity of supporters it is now a state-of-the-art, award-winning health care facility that offers a broad range of medical services, including emergency care, diagnostic imaging, a birthing center, behavioral health unit, comprehensive surgical services, intensive care, acute inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and has received the coveted Magnet designation from the American Nurses Association and Baby Friendly designation from the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

Gateway Healthcare provides outstanding treatment, intervention and prevention services to adults and children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with behavioral and substance abuse issues, through its residential, outpatient and community-based programs. We reach more than 25,000 Rhode Islanders each year through residential, outpatient and community-based programs and stand alongside our affiliates in a mutual effort to address creative solutions for community care. Rhode Island Hospital is a private, 719-bed, not-for-profit acute care hospital. We are the largest hospital in the state and provide comprehensive services to patients. We have particular expertise in cardiology, including the states only open heart surgery program; oncology; neurosciences; orthopedics; organ transplantation; pediatrics; psychiatry and diabetes.

Our pediatric division, Hasbro Childrens Hospital, is the states premier pediatric facility. On October 6, 1868, a 59-year-old shoemaker entered a hospital in Providence. His diagnosis was not unusual and his treatment was uneventful. Yet he represented a milestone in the history of medicine in New England because heJohn Sutherlandwas the first patient admitted to Rhode Island Hospital.

Several years earlier, a small group of visionary Rhode Islanders had begun planning the community hospital. In 1857, a bequest by Moses Brown Ives established a fund for a hospital in Rhode Island. Since then, Rhode Island Hospital has expanded beyond Ives early vision to become the principal provider of specialty care in the state and a major teaching and research center.
