HI, I'm Caitlin. I'm one of the hygienists here at Dr. Whiteman's. I graduated from Gulf Coast State College in 2014 and moved back to Apalachicola in 2015 so I could work in my hometown. Small town living is the best, and being close to the beach is a huge plus. I love my job and enjoy getting to know my patients. Rex A. Whiteman D.D.S. P.A. - General dentist in Apalachicola, FL

I was raised in Apalachicola, graduated from Apalachicola High School and moved to Panama City Beach in 2001. After changing my major multiple times and much thought about the many potential career paths I could choose, I became interested in dentistry, asked to shadow at a dental office near my home and was immediately hired.

I trained on the job and began working as a dental assistant in 2003. While working as an assistant and front desk clerk, I made the decision to pursue a career in Dental Hygiene, completed the required prerequisite classes and was accepted into the Dental Hygiene program at GCCC in 2007. Since completing my degree and becoming a registered dental hygienist in 2009, I have worked in large, fast-paced dental offices in both corporate and family practice settings, in St. Petersburg, West Palm Beach and South/Central Florida. Adter 10 years of city living and a variety of experience in my field, I made the decision to move home and settle in to start a family.

Folks should be aware of several things before using this dentist. First of all, he does not accept assignment of benefits from insurance companies. In other words, if you go to him and have insurance coverage, he makes you pay the full amount and you are responsible for getting reimbursed, unlike the huge majority of health care providers. There is no mention of this on his website and you won't know until you check out. Also, he runs such a cheap operation, he does not even have mouthwash available for his patients. Totally bizarre! Lastly, he says his office will file your claim as favor to you. Don't believe this. In my situation his office says they filed a claim yet the insurance company says they did not. The response from his office is that they did file and they will do nothing else. It is then up to you to file and they want to force you to come to the office and pick up the documents. As a 71 yr old disabled person this places a particular hardship upon the patient. I don't question his competence as a dentist but his open disdain for his patients from a business standpoint is remarkable. However, he operates in a very small town, with little competition and can get away with it. He is also not in network with many large insurers, including some Blue Cross policies. Lastly, he is not even accredited by the Better Business Bureau, which speaks volumes. So, understand what you are getting when you go to this place. As the old legal axiom says, "Caveat emptor"--let the buyer beware!!!!

Unfortunately I have the kind of teeth that required a good bit of work throughout my life. This in turn had me visiting multiple dentist as I moved around. I have had terrible experiences and very good experiences through the years. Rex has seen me several times and I can honestly say he is awesome! I'm not sure what the issue is with the other reviews, but I can't in any way see how they are accurate. I always question when someone does not provide specifics. I have had repair work done on crowns, cleanings, and advice on my issues. Rex and his staff have been excellent. I would, and do, highly recommend Rex.

The following is a personal opinion based on my interaction with Dr Whiteman's office and 50 plus years of going to the dentist. My experience today was in a word, horrible! In my opinion, there business practices boarder on unethical. I made an appointment specifically to get a chipped tooth repaired (I've had a bonded tooth repaired many times and it normally takes about 15 min's). Well, it appears they had no intention of repairing my tooth today! Today, I waited 35 min's and got charged $71 Dr Whiteman to look at the tooth and told to make an appointment to get it repaired! I've probably had chips in the bonding agents used to repaired teeth 10 or more times and never experienced this type of double appointment process and charging. Pretty sure their estimate to repair the tooth was higher than I've historically paid as well. I called the office following the "exam" and asked for the doctor to call me to discuss the matter. I was told "no" by the receptionist who said was was also the office manager. Guess I'll leave town to get my tooth repaired!

Incompetent, dishonest, unconcerned dentist, hygienists and staff. Their poor care forced us to seek a new clinic. Beware.
