Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.

Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.

Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.

If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!

The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

Dr. Jessy Malli completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Southern California, & continued his post-graduate education at the USC School of Dentistry. He returned home to Tulare after graduating from dental school in 1998. Dr. Malli is one of the few dentists in California to be licensed in both Adult & Pediatric Oral Conscious Sedation. During the past 9 years, Dr. Malli has been dedicated to advanced education & has had the privilege of treating over 1,000 patients under sedation. His advanced training in many dental disciplines has allowed him to maintain a diverse & exciting dental practice. In 2006, Dr. Malli, had the privilege of completing a residency program in Advanced Fixed Prosthodontics with the prestigious Esthetic Professionals Group in Southern California, headed by world renowned Prosthodontist Dr. Bruce Crispin.

Born & raised in the valley, I feel it is an honor to be able to give back to the children of the community where I myself grew up. My husband, Joe, & I are devoted parents to our daughter Suhana. As a mother I understand that every child is unique & special & so I strive to provide a comforting & nurturing environment for each child.

Dr. Reva Mallis practice is focused on the oral health care needs of infants, children & adolescents. She completed her doctoral training from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, San Francisco, in 2004. She is board certified in Pediatric Oral Conscious Sedation. She is also certified in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). Dr. Reva is an active member of the Marin County Dental Association, Tulare-Kings Dental Society, California Dental Association, & the American Dental Association. Personal & patient education is of utmost importance to Dr. Reva, so she has attended hundreds of hours of continuing education throughout the years to provide the latest & best oral health care for her patients.

Dr. Sanaz Akbari completed her dental school training in Manila, Philippines, in 2009, & continued her Post-Graduate studies at the International Dental Program at De La Salle University in Leon, Mexico. Dr. Akbari is a well-established member of both the California Dental Association & the American Dental Association. She enjoys all aspects of dentistry & is working to advance her training in dental implantology & oral conscious sedation for anxious patients.

She enjoys giving her patients a reason to go to the dentist by providing them with a positive & unforgettable experience. Dr. Akbari speaks English, Spanish & Farsi. Outside of the office, Dr. Akbari enjoys exploring new cuisines with friends, working out & traveling. She is proud to be a member of Redwood Family Dentistry.
