It is an honor and a privilege to be allowed to treat fellow humans. I strive, with each person and every interaction, to act with integrity and compassion, treating the individual as I would a family member.
As an orthodontist, it is intensely gratifying to me to help people feel better about how they see themselves and how others may see them. I can sometimes change a personality with the patient not realizing its happening!
I love what I do. I love transforming peoples lives, personalities, and how they feel about themselves, all by changing smiles. I love the ongoing challenges, intricacies, and biomechanics of tooth movement. I love combining medicine, science, and art to craft a smile that is stable, functional, becoming, and will last.
After almost 40 years of practicing orthodontics, I can honestly say I still love what I do and have no plans of stopping. My grandfather was a dentist. My father was a physician, as were two uncles. Choosing to go into healthcare seemed right to me, and I have never doubted that decision. Now I have a son in dental school!
At Smith Smiles, our patients are part of our family. My team members have worked together for a long time. We offer experience, compassion, ethical care, and a listening ear. Each team member brings their own personality and knowledge to the office, and together we deliver a treatment experience and results that have our patients smiling!
In addition to my private practice, I have been a clinical instructor with the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics for more than 35 years, with my specialty being Invisalign and clear aligner therapy. Teaching the next generations of orthodontists keeps me engaged and excited, and I have access to leading-edge research and evolving techniques, as well.
In addition to teaching, I regularly attend and participate in study clubs, forums, and summits, to staycurrent on the newest developments in the specialty. I am honored to be a member of the Top 1% Docs of Invisalign in North America.
I have two sons and a dog. My oldest son, Scotty, is a world traveler and in the process of starting a business in Hong Kong. My youngest son, Spencer, is currently attending the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. Our spoiled and much-loved dog is Cookie, a labradoodle.
When Im not working, I can usually be found outside. I love anything to do with the water: sailing, boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, surfing, and waterskiing. I also play golf and tennis and, in the winters, paddle tennis. During warmer months I usually bike18 to 40 miles before breakfast! I also enjoy cooking, grilling, and entertaining at home.
In addition, I volunteer my time with various community organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America (Im an Eagle Scout). I also currently serve as the Director of Public Safety in Groton, where I oversee the police and fire department.

Before starting care, we will walk you through the plan, and explainwhat will happen, what youll need to do, and what to expect. We will also present all fees, discuss financials including flexible plans with low or no down payments and interest-free financing, and answer all your questions.

I went to Dr. Smith for Invisalign aligners almost 7 years ago because at the time I was going to school for trombone and didn't want braces to tear up my lips when I played. There was so much extra plastic on the inside of the aligners that it kept cutting my tongue and cheeks when I played that I constantly bled. I brought this up as a concern, but I was told that I had to deal with it or cut the aligners/use dental wax myself. They would not help me fix the aligners and after both of those solutions didn't help the problem, I had to stop using the aligners. I ended up not completing the treatment and stopped going to this practice because everyone treated me like I was the problem and it wasn't their responsibility to fix my aligners so I wasn't in constantly pain and bleeding. If I could give zero stars I would. The Invisalign treatment was expensive, which I thought would get me better care. Unfortunately, it did not and I was treated like a nuisance.

I always enjoy my visits, The staff are great, welcoming and helpful. I never feel rushed and always get my questions answered. I liked meeting the new Doc and loved hearing that Dr.Smith is having the chance to teach back at Tufts!

I have entrusted Dr. Smith to take care of both my daughter's braces. My second daughter just had a peg tooth of her's built up into a pearly white tooth. Her teeth are so beautiful. Dr. Smith and his staff are like family. This is the place to come to for the best care.
