Dr. Collins was born and raised in the coal region of Eastern Kentucky in the town of Lackey, Kentucky. He graduated high school from Knott County Central High School in Hindman, Kentucky in 1986. He attended Prestonsburg Community College, Hazard Community College and graduated from University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of General studies in 1989. Dr. Collins attended and graduated with his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from University of Louisville School of Dentistry from 1989-1993.
He is also interested in colonial antiques, Shenandoah Valley pottery, landscaping and architectural design. He feels very lucky to be surrounded by very caring coworkers and wonderfully pleasant patients.
He was selected, trained at, and received his certificate in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 1993-1997 at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Collins started his oral surgery practice from scratch in Waynesboro, Va in 1997. He became board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1999. In 2003, he expanded his practice to Charlottesville, Va. He maintains both practices in both Waynesboro and Charlottesville. Dr. Collins met his wife, Kess, in dental school. They have three children in college and high school, and live at the base of the Blue Ridge in Afton, Va. He lives a very active life that includes: photography, running, hiking, screenwriting, film making, acting, playing guitar, singing, songwriting, and farming. I was experiencing extreme pain with one of my teeth and my regular dentist was unable to provide an explanation. This situation led me to seek a second opinion from Dr. Collins and his friendly staff quickly scheduled me an appointment. Dr. Collins discovered the source of my pain and immediately fixed the issue. I consider myself fortunate to have been treated by such a knowledgeable and personable doctor. I recommend this office without any hesitations.

This was my third or fourth experience with Dr. Collins and his staff over several years; each has been quite professional and I am always treated with respect and good humor (which is very important to me and I believe many!). The conversational nature of interactions helps to relax this patient who had some less than pleasant experiences with the world of dentists as a young child...not as much numbing way back then! Dr. Collins and his staff explain things very thoroughly and give exceptional, succinct direction sheets which are quite helpful. Everyone on the staff is receptive when I ask questions during a visit or call after appointments if I have additional questions. I thank my dentist often for his referral of me to Dr. Collins!

Dr. Collins is a great guy! He tells it like it is! I had my teeth removed, no pain, complete understanding of procedures and price! My son is getting ready to remove four wisdom teeth. Dr. Collins made him understand, and made him at ease after his dentist scared him to death! He is an awesome doctor, complete professional!

I have a phobia of dentist from childhood and from going in 2019 to a practice that did nothing but charge me for x-rays. I did find another practice that helped me and referred me to Collins. Last night I was having doubts but this morning I am very pleased with the outcome from yesterday. They are all very very patient and informative. I believe I will be going back for further treatment.

Everyone I met was friendly, efficient, competent and caring. The procedure turned out to be more involved than expected but Dr. Collins and his staff made sure I understood what needed to happen and what the options were. I was also relieved that it was done in a timely manner! I would certainly recommend this doctor and his staff.
