Progressive Periodontics is not your average dentistry practice. We were the first periodontal office in Portland, the second in the Pacific Northwest to offer state-of-the-art laser periodontal surgery (LANAP), and one of the very few to offer intravenous (IV) sedation. Dr. Thanik truly enjoys analyzing new findings and adopting them into daily clinical practice to better serve his patients. He attends additional education courses, well above what is required by state licensing boards, to stay abreast on the latest developments in dentistry, periodontics, and implant dentistry. He has also completed all necessary courses for complete laser periodontal surgery and is currently a certified instructor, allowing him to teach the technique to other surgeons.

Dr. Sunil Thanik comes from a family of dentists both his father and grandfather were dentists. That probably explains why he has been a fan of dentistry since he was a kid. In his mind, dentistry is the perfect field in which science and people come together.
During dental school, he was fascinated by the connection between whole body health and gum disease. For this reason, he considered specializing in Periodontology. When he learned that periodontists often build long-lasting relationships with their patients, he knew it was the right path for him.
When you first meet Dr. Thanik, youll immediately notice his warmth and compassion. Youll also be happy to learn that he has a great sense of humor!Dr. Thanik was born and raised in Canada if you listen closely, you may still hear bits of an accent.

Elyce joined our team in 2005 as Dr. Thaniks surgical dental assistant. Over time, she has had the opportunity to experience diverse roles within the practice. This has allowed her to gain a comprehensive knowledge base to share with and educate the patients we treat. She enjoys coming to work every day and always has our patients best interests in mind. She balances her high quality of care with levity by knowing when to have fun at work. Working side-by-side with Dr. Thanik has enabled Elyce to learn from his experience and allows her to view how much he cares about each patient he sees.
Ashlee is our talented dental hygienist. She truly enjoys her job and enjoys coming to work each day. Its a privilege to work alongside a team that finds pride in what they do and how they care for their patients.

Dr. Thanik worked magic in my mouth. The laser surgery did not hurt, as he promised. It healed quickly. Directions for after care were complete and easy to follow. He did a slight adjustment to my bite that made such an improvement I felt euphoric! I highly recommend Progressive Periodontics.

What an amazing experience I had at this office! I am extremely picky with whom I choose to be my provider and thank goodness Dr. Thanik and his kind staff entered my life. I should call him professor Thanik, since he was so educational and explained everything so clearly to me from steps A to Z. Did I mentioned that he is so gentle! Definitely come here.

Yesterday I had a laser periodontal procedure to combat periodontal disease. I tend to dread dental/periodontal procedures, and I was pleasantly surprised about the absence of pain the following day and the relatively minor discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Thanik and his staff were friendly and responsive to my apprehension. I appreciated the follow-up call from Dr. Thanik as well.

Going to Dr. Thanik's office is always uplifting and healing. I feel respected, cared for and safe. I know I am in the best of hands and have the upmost trust that I will be the better for having had Dr. Thanik's treatment. Awhile back I had bleeding gums which had developed into a more serious problem. He knew exactly how to treat it and I was comfortable during and after the Laser treatment. This happened right before I was leaving to go on a two week trip. I was confident that I was going to be fine which was what came to be. I get the sense that all patients are given the royal treatment, meant to feel special and valued. Dr. Thanik and his staff are very skilled, caring, cheerful and attentive.

Dr. Thanik has performed multiple procedures for me and exceeded my expectations every time. Ten years ago, he successfully performed the completely painless LANAP laser procedure, which was a breeze compared to a previous osseous surgery I had had at the hands of another periodontist. As a condition of the LANAP, I had my hygiene appointments at Dr. Thanik's office for a year. The resulting experience was so positive that I have continued to have my teeth cleaned at Dr. Thanik's office ever since. In 2017 I learned I'd need multiple implants and bilateral gum grafting. A well-respected maxillofacial surgeon who had done my previous three implants declined to take my case because he thought I didn't have enough bone and was concerned about the risk of nerve damage. Dr. Thanik had newer technology and a much more forward-thinking approach. A CT scan confirmed that I did have sufficient bone and Dr. Thanik assured me that the work could be done safely with computer guided instruments. I had the procedure under gentle IV sedation without any adverse effects beyond some temporary jaw stiffness. In spite of the technical difficulties presented by my very small mouth, all 5 implants are perfectly aligned and functioning as intended. My third procedure involved bilateral gum grafting done under IV sedation. I had expected at least a week of pain from this procedure, but experienced only very minimal discomfort and a little temporary swelling on one side. Inexplicably, my tongue never could detect which areas of the palate had been affected. Dr. Thanik is a gifted practitioner in a class of his own. In the past ten years, my oral health has benefitted abundantly from his expertise, his state of the art technology and also from his positive, forward thinking approach. He inspires trust and respect. This is a surgeon I once saw personally escorting an elderly patient to his car. He is gentle, kind, warm and approachable. His hygienist and office staff are equally personable and the office itself is meticulously clean. I feel extremely fortunate to be in his capable hands, and actually look forward to my office visits.

My wife required major dental implants and Dr. Thanik did an exceptional periodontal work. He explained the treatment process in detail, answered our questions and concerns and made sure we were comfortable with the decision to proceed. You can tell he has lots of expertise from many years of experience. The procedure was spread over a few months and was completed successfully on time without any complications. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. His clinic is very well equipped with up to date technology, clean, spacious and has good ambience. Would highly recommend Dr. Thanik to anyone looking for a periodontist.

I recently had LANAP (laser) treatment for my gums. I'm aware most people don't look forward to dental and gum treatments, I am no exception. In fact, I have a great deal of anxiety. Dr Thanik and his team did everything in thier power to make me comfortable and reduce my stress. In the end the procedure was completed relatively quickly. The instructions for home recovery were clearly explained and provided in clear to understand detail. The following day, which by the way was a Saturday, Dr. Thanik himself called to to check in on how I was recovering/feeling. He could have delegated that to one of his team, but didn't. That meant a lot to me. I am very pleased with the professionalism of the team at Progressive Periodontics and with my current results.
