A fact that surprises many people is that the most common dental problem in the U.S. and around the world isnt cavities, but gum disease. This is a bacterial infection that can develop along the gum line due to a lack of oral hygiene, leading to inflammation, tenderness, and even tooth loss if left untreated. At Prime Dentistry, were able to both prevent and treat gum disease in-house so our patients never have to worry about this potentially serious problem.

If we find that a patient does indeed have gum disease, our first line of treatment usually involves a deep cleaning, which consists of two separate techniques called scaling and root planing. Together, they help remove any plaque and tartar from along the gum line as well as smooth out the rough surfaces of the teeths roots, making it much less likely for bacteria to gather along the gums in the future.

After the gums have been thoroughly cleaned, our team may choose to apply a topical antibiotic called Arestin. Arestin is made up of thousands of tiny microspheres, each one filled with a powerful antimicrobial agent. When placed on the gums, the microspheres slowly dissolve over the course of a few days, enabling the medicine to seep deep below the gum line and kill even the most well-hidden bacteria.

The tiny spaces located between the teeth and gums are called pockets, and they usually end up as the breeding ground for gum disease bacteria. For patients dealing with this infection, a pocket irrigation treatment serves to clean out these problem areas while also reducing their size, lowering a patients chances for reinfection in the future. This procedure can also aid in the healing of damage gum tissue, helping it firmly reattach to the teeth.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is much more common than you might think. In fact, the CDC has found that about half of all adults in the United States will suffer from periodontal disease at some point in their lives. Its also the leading cause of tooth loss among Americans. In order to help you understand this condition a little better, you can read this list of periodontal disease FAQs.

There are two stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. The early stage, gingivitis, presents itself in the form of mildly bleeding gums (especially when you brush or floss), or tender, sore, or red gums.

In comparison, periodontitis, the more advanced stage, is significantly more severe. Pockets will start to form between your teeth and your gums, and pus may occasionally leak out. Other symptoms include frequent mouth sores, persistent bad breath or a foul taste in your mouth, and loose teeth. If you wait too long to seek treatment, you could lose your teeth altogether. Thats why, if you notice any of these symptoms, its best to contact us right away!

Multiple studies have shown that people with gum disease are much more likely to suffer from heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems. While its not exactly clear why, since the two conditions share many of the same risk factors, many scientists believe that bacteria present in your mouth can set off a chain reaction of inflammation throughout your body, including your heart. Similarly, infections in the gums have also been linked to lung disease, liver cancer, and Alzheimers disease.

In many cases, your lifestyle choices can greatly affect your oral health. Poor dental hygiene is a large contributor toward periodontal disease. Neglecting to brush and floss can cause plaque and tartar to accumulate along your gumline, both of which are full of harmful bacteria that result in infections. Smoking also puts you at greater risk.

As with the vast majority of dental problems, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keeping up with your oral hygiene is crucial in maintaining healthy gums. Its also important to attend regular checkups and cleanings so that we can both remove plaque and tartar from your gumline and detect any warning signs of periodontal disease early on. Additionally, it helps to avoid smoking and to eat a diet high in fresh produce and low in processed sugars. These steps can help your gums stay healthy for life!

I'm 63 and have been to tons of dentist, 5 years ago I spent over $ 10k and 3 yrs later had most of the work removed because that dentist put caps and bridges over cavities which rotted the teeth to the point of having them removed. For the last 2 year I've been trying to find a good dentist and I'll be honest most want to do procedure to deplete my insurance funds and then my wallet !!! But my search has ended with an outstanding dentist and staff which not only me but my wife loves. Doctor Ahir DDS and his highly trained staff will be our only dentist for now and the future !!!

It was my first time here and I was kinda nervous since I haven't been to dentist in a couple years. The environment at this office was very welcoming. Everyone at this office was sweet, they had a smile on their face and I even laughed with the girls in the back bc of how our conversation carried. Dr. Ahir is very nice and he didn't seem like I was just another patient. They all took good care of me today and I'm glad I found this place. My fiance is even considering changing to this dentist office.

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Prime Dentistry in Denton. We are fairly new patients at this dental practice. My husband and I see Dr. Rajiv. He and his staff have been nothing but highly professional and friendly. Dr. Rajiv is very thorough; his treatment plans are explained to and discussed with the patient always considering one's input and situation. The staff is friendly and helpful; insurance matters are handled accurately. Dr. Rajiv redid the crown on one of my front teeth for me which had been an awful blemish on my face entirely affecting my self-confidence for decades in the past. His work turned out absolutely stunning!! My smile is restored and confident again. What broken tooth? "Cosmetic dentistry" should also be in the office's advertising. Phenomenal work!! My husband had more extensive work done that was stretched out over a few months. He, too, cannot be happier with the care he received by Prime Dentistry. The office is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment ensuring the patient's comfort and least invasive procedures. Beyond that, the patient's contentment is furthermore guaranteed by the -- again - very friendly and caring staff. Finally, after my recent dental hygiene appointment - which, by the way, was the quickest and least invasive I have ever received -- the little kit that was sent home with me included a bamboo (!!) toothbrush! How awesome and "green" is that!? This little gesture confirmed to me the office's concern for global sustainability. I like that! Thank you Prime Dentistry!! :)

Prime Dentistry is great! The offices are always so clean and the staff always have smiles as you walk through the front door. This is also the only dentist I've ever been to where there is a TV TO WATCH ABOVE YOUR CHAIR! If I could give 6 stars out of 5 would.

Great dentist! He is great with the entire family, kids love him and the stubborn husband. This office always has upgraded equipment I've never seen anywhere else that's less invasive and less painful if you need major work done. They also have fair prices and work with you regardless of the situation. Once he even offered to eat the cost of X-rays if the insurance wouldn't cover it because our last dentist X-rays weren't good. Also he has training with special needs and that is a rare find!

I was recommended this dentist office from one of my coworkers after I was experiencing a tooth that had abscessed. They were quick to see me and take care of the infection. When I was able to get my root canal, they made sure I was comfortable and couldn't feel a thing. They were so kind, and I plan to use them from now on for all of my dentistry needs!

I hadn't been to the dentist in a couple years and really didn't know what to expect. Thankfully, I was in great hands for my appointment. The staff here is truly exceptional and are well knowledged in everything they do. I would highly recommend this office to anyone who is looking for a great dentist!

I hadn't been to a dentist in years due to growing up in a poor household & then I just became too anxious as an adult. I finally had to go due to wisdom tooth pain & chose this place since the reviews were excellent. The doctor & staff first made me embarrassed, asking why I hadn't been in so long. They pressured me into making my appt & paying before I left the office. I expressed my anxiety & that I'd prefer to be knocked out of possible, they offered no solution. I even asked for laughing gas & they had nothing in the office. They also did a root canal & put a temporary cap on it, which fell off within just a few days. I called a few times to see when I could get my replacement but I kept getting the response of "its not ready yet". Then my insurance expired, so i paid who knows how much for something i was never able to receive. They also never told me about "dry socket", even though i made it clear i hadn't been to a dentist for most of my life, thankfully a family member informed me as they noticed i was drinking out of a straw. I will say my anxiety lessened significantly as they worked on me during my visit, i didn't feel any pain & the dentist worked very quickly, which i apprexiated. I went to Comfort Dental after my experience with Prime, they not only offered to refer me to someone who WOULD be able to knock me out (not like Prime who acted like that just wasn't an option) but they also said they could give me laughing gas if I chose to go with their office. Comfort is a fraction of the price, doesn't embarrass you & in general seems to know what they're doing much better. Will not return to Prime, not even for the tooth cap i never received yet paid for.

They took me in on two hours notice when I was in a lot of pain. I had tried several "in network" dentists and couldn't get in. The dr was warm and friendly as well as very professional. So was the staff. The office was squeaky clean. Saved me a lot of suffering. Once again took me on short notice and they were warm and friendly. Caring staff and very professional!!

Complete waste of money. Extremely disappointed with Dr Ahir. About 2 years ago he did two crowns. Went to a different dentist this year for cleaning. He said I need to replace those two crowns because the job is a mess. Visited another Dental office for a second opinion and got the same answer. Now must pay thousands again to replace them.
