Preston B. Loving, DDS - General dentist in Newport News, VA

My goal is to establish and maintain my patients good oral health by providing the basis for good overall systemic health and well-being. I spend one-on-one time with my patients, to make sure they understand their condition and treatment plan options completely, so we can create a healthy outcome.

In the years Ive been practicing, Ive had the opportunity to meet and care for many remarkable people from my community many of whom are my friends, family, and neighbors. They have all made an impact in my life, I hope as much as I have made in theirs.

Learning is a lifelong necessity, especially when one works in the dental field. There is always something new to learn, whether its a procedure or technique, or a revolutionary new technology. Staying current with the advances in dentistry empowers me to provide the most up-to-date treatment options to my patients, which in turn helps them to achieve better levels of oral health.

I was born, raised, and am proud to have practiced for more than three decades in my hometown of Newport News. My wife and I raised two beautiful daughters here. When Im not in the office, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, walking the dog, fishing, sailing, and doing hands-on projects around the house.

We recognize that all our patients are unique and deserve to receive dental care that reflects their individual needs. Our experienced and talented dental team is committed to working with you and your family to create a comfortable, stress-free, and rewarding dental experience every time you visit our practice.

I graduated from Old Dominion University School of Dental Hygiene in 1989 and joined Dr. Lovings office in 1993. As our dental hygienist, I play a significant role in the overall dental health and well-being of our patients.

I am a huge animal lover and have five pets of my own. My favorite charities help animals around the country. I enjoy spending my free time with my husband and three sons, being outdoors, working in the yard, and going out on our boat.

The best part of my job is the feeling of satisfaction I receive from educating my patients on taking care of their mouths and in return seeing the results of great homecare. It is great to be able to show patients that their hard work and diligence pays off.

Im a mother to a 13-year-old daughter, Skyler, as well as a lab named Lizzie and a kitty, Stormie. When Im not working, I play volleyball and kickball in two all-womens leagues. My daughter is an avid field hockey player, but also loves and plays basketball and soccer, so I spend most of my free time at a field of some sort. My family loves playing sports as well as watching them. If there is a game on TV or being played close by, we are watching it! When we actually have some free time, I enjoy spending time with my two animals and relaxing with my daughter.

Philosophy of CareThe team at Preston B. Loving, DDS believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Preston B. Loving, DDS work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Newport News area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team at Preston B. Loving, DDS can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

Q: Are baby teeth really that important to my child?A: Primary, or baby, teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

Q: What should I do if my child has a toothache?A: First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

Q: How do dental sealants work?A: Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

Q: How do I know if my child is getting enough fluoride?A: Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your childs primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

Q: What can I do to protect my teeth during sporting events?A: Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

Q: How safe are dental X-rays?A: There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Sat outside 25 minutes before the appointment due tk my anxiety, decided its nownor never. Ive had a severe toothache for a bit at this point. I cannot recommend this office enough. From the receptionist who welcomed me in, spoke to me like she knew me. The hygienist Casey (C not a K because that's blasphemy) was empathetic, charismatic and knowledgeable. The entire visit she explained and reassured me. When the Dr. Loving came in I expected my typical office, but this man introduced himself asked about me and my habits and the entire visit I could not stop chatting with them.

I had a very pleasant and calm experience. It was my first time at Dr. Lovings office. Very gentle, friendly staff and calming. For a person that had only HORRIBLE experiences as a child, I am very impressed with Dr. Loving and his staff! Not many dentists can make me comfortable but he did! I found my forever dentist. Thank you Dr Loving
