Dr. Powers is one of few specialists that is board certified in orthodontics in southern Indiana. This means that she has gone 'a step beyond' bycompleting avoluntary examination of The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO).Board certification is based on the highest standards of knowledge, continued proficiency,and clinical skill. There isonly one certifying board recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association.
Dr. Powers graduated high honors witha 4-year bachelors degree from Indiana University in Bloomington. She continued at Indiana UniversitySchool of Dentistryranking 2nd in hergraduating class, and was selected for Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Dental Honor Fraternity for top of the class. She then attended the prestigious orthodontic program at the University of Illinois at Chicago for a 3-year specialty program. It was there that she obtained the training to be at the forefront of cutting-edge new techniques and principles in orthodontics. Shetrained to handle every situation from the most basic to the most challenging cases, such as craniofacial disorders andorthognathic (jaw)surgery.She also defended a master's thesis and her research was chosen to be published in the prestigious Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
Dr. Powers is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Indiana Association of Orthodontists (president), Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists, Illinois Alumni Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Greene Co District Dental Society, Indiana Dental Association, and American Board of Orthodontists (diplomat).
Growing up, Dr. Powers says she was scared of the dentist. She had a great deal of dental work done as a child and felt fear firsthand. 'Unfortunately I had some bad experiences at the dental office. I understood how it could make you fearful for the rest of your life and I wanted to make things better.' Throughout all of her dental training, her favorite specialty in dentistry was orthodontics. 'I loved seeing the dramatic changes in people 's smile and in their face. Amazing results that didn 't even seem possible without something drastic or invasive like plastic surgery.' It truly changes a person 's life!
