Dr. John Portwood, Jr. has lived in the Baton Rouge area his entire life. His father practiced pediatric dentistry in Baton Rouge for 26 years, so John practically grew up in a dental environment. He graduated from LSU and furthered his career by receiving his dental degree at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry.

He belongs to various dental organizations and has received numerous dental honors. He is a lifetime member of the American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry. He has been President of the Louisiana Academy twice and has served nationally in numerous positions, ranging from education to finance. Dr. Portwood is also a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, and a Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Portwood recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Academy of General Dentistry, the world's second largest dental organization. This national award has been given to only 30 dentists in the history of the organization and attests to the commitment Dr. Portwood has given to the advancement of general dentistry nationwide. The Louisiana Dental Association also honored Dr. Portwood recently with its Distinguished Service Award for his service to dentistry.

Dr. Portwood has been published in many journals and publications throughout the country and recently finished the book, Youve Graduated, Now What?, that was distributed to every graduating senior dental student in the country. He has lectured to dentists throughout the country and is a frequent guest lecturer to the senior class at the LSU School of Dentistry, where he helps prepare students to begin their professional careers.

He is married to Sherrie and has three children. He is a sports fanatic and is an avid fan of LSU, the New Orleans Saints, and his beloved Boston Red Sox. In his free time, John loves playing golf and traveling.

Dr. Sabrina Portwood OShee has lived in the Baton Rouge area her entire life. She is the third generation of Portwoods practicing dentistry in the Baton Rouge-area. Dr. OShee is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a Bachelors of Science degree. She furthered her career by receiving a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry.

Dr. OShee is a member of several dental organizations. She is a member of the American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

She has been published multiple times in the journal for the Academy of General Dentistry. She has also been featured in articles for the LDA Journal for her work with pre-dental students at the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry for initiating the Pre-Dental 101 program to help aspiring students become more familiar with the profession.

Dr. OShee enjoys volunteering her services to the Mission of Mercy Project (LaMOM) in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The project provides two days of free dental work for attendees. She also enjoys volunteering her time with Habitat for Humanity.

Brenda joined Dr. Portwoods team in 1993 after moving to the Baton Rouge area from Alabama. She will be one of the team members assisting Dr. Portwood during dental procedures. She has 26 years of dental experience and is certified as an Expanded Duties Dental Assistant. Through the years, she has held a variety of positions, including assisting chairside as well as business office functions. She thoroughly enjoys assisting since it gives her an opportunity to interact with patients, and she constantly strives to make every patients visit enjoyable!

Brenda and her husband, Mike, have two children, Brandon and Nathan, who both live in Denham Springs. She has one wonderful grandson, Cohen, who is the light of her life. In her spare time, she enjoys boat riding, cooking, watching LSU football, and going to the beach.

Cigi is originally from Metairie, Louisiana. She received her bachelors degree in dental hygiene from the LSU School of Dentistry in 2008.Upon graduation, she moved to Baton Rouge to join Dr. Portwoods dental team. She is responsible for providing preventative dental care and dental cleanings for our patients.

After working a semester in Disney World in the LSU college program, Meredith became a huge Disney fan. She loves all LSU sports, which came from her days on campus. She enjoys traveling and is a fitness fanatic.

Sherrie has been an integral part of Portwood Dental for over twenty years. A native of New Orleans, she worked at the LSU Dental School Department of Endodontics for several years prior to coming to our dental practice. After being a part-time assistant initially, she has settled into her role as business office administrator. Her smiling face will greet you in the business office as her primary goal is to help you through the insurance maze and help you with your financial concerns.

Hayley joined the team at Portwood Dental in June 2018 to work chair-side with Dr. Sabrina Portwood O'Shee. She has been working in the dental field since 2012, with both clinical and clerical experience. She received her Expanded Duty Dental Assistant and Radiograph Certifications from LSU. Hayley enjoys assisting because it allows her to interact and build relationships with our patients.

As you arrive at Portwood Family Dentistry for you first visit, expect a dental experience like none that you have ever had before. Please bring your completedinformation and health history forms that are downloadable from this website. We will not be able to proceed with treatment without these forms. If you are unable to fill them out, please bring them, and one of our helpful staff will assist you.

We believe in a comprehensive approach to dentistry, and that begins with a thorough exam. Since we dont know your dental history, we do not usually clean your teeth at your first visit. Special arrangements can be made if this is a major inconvenience.

You will have necessary X-rays taken to evaluate the areas that we cannot see, such as the bone support and the areas between your teeth. We will then thoroughly examine your teeth and old restorations; evaluate your occlusion, or bite; perform an oral cancer exam; and finally, we will examine your gum health and bone support. After our examination, we will discuss your treatment options and provide you with a personalized treatment plan.
