Its more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have braces, so the teeth and gums are healthy during orthodontic treatment. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may require more frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning. Adults who have a history of gum disease should also see a periodontist during orthodontic treatment. Watch the two videos below on the proper care of braces during orthodontic treatment.
What can you eat? Lets talk about what you shouldnt eat! For the first day or so, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables. Before long, youll be able to bite a cucumber again. But youll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as youre wearing braces.
When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for 3 5 days. Take Tylenol or whatever you normally take for a headache or discomfort. The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the braces. We will supply wax to put on the braces in irritated areas to lessen discomfort.
To successfully complete orthodontic treatment, the patient must work together with the orthodontist. The teeth and jaws can only move toward their corrected positions if the patient consistently wears the rubber bands or other appliances as prescribed. Lack of cooperation following instructions and damaged appliances lengthen the treatment time so please follow instructions.

Dr. Porter and his staff are knowledgable, friendly, and efficient. I recently completed my orthodontic treatment, and would recommend Dr. Porter to anyone looking to improve their smile. They are very thorough and great at building a treatment plan that works for you. In addition, the front desk staff are accommodating and always worked with my busy schedule.

The staff and Dr. Porter himself were so amazing! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a kind and genuine welcome - knowing exactly who I was and what I came for. Than, I was helped in back by the Dr and his staff. They went well above and beyond than the routine visit to ensure my visit went exceedingly well. They prioritized my comfort and identified ways to make my braces experience more manageable while teaching me about the process. The whole culture of the place from end to end felt very pleasant. Can't say enough about this place, highly recommend!

Porter orthodontics has thee most incredible team working behind the scenes. The front desk staff is a pleasure to work with snd made my paperwork process a breeze to go through. My first oral surgeon didn't do the best job and Porter Orthodontics referred me to someone they was spectacular. Dr. Porter is a pleasure to directly talk to as he has just regular conversations with you about his background or just anything about you just to make you more than comfortable. An office I trust because of the clear communication, respect and fast process of my braces. Choose Porter!

Very very disappointed with post treatment for phase one braces...very careless attitude .. I feel like I wasted my money and time. They were not interested in maintaining the treatment we received...the retainer I was given was a cheap and flimsy piece of throw away after one use type of plastic, and after a while became worn and broken, not to mention a breeding ground for bacteria. I was advised that I didn't need to get a new one even though l requested a new one twice. This retainer could not possibly be meant to hold any work that was done and paid for on my children's teeth. But I believe that was the whole point so we would have no choice but to pay more money to get phase two braces. They have the capability to maintain phase one treatment but choose not to. For reasons I need not mention. I was initially happy with porter orthodontics but after this I will never recommend a parent getting phase one braces for their children from porter orthodontics after what my children and I went through with this office. Very very dissatisfied and disgusted with Porter Orthodontics.. it's a shame because there are some really nice and respectable people that work there and they can only do what they are told.
