Dr. Portalupi grew up in the small lumber town of Arcata on the northern California coast. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of Santa Clara and his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco.
While serving as a part-time clinical instructor at the TMJ clinic of the University of California-San Francisco Dental School, Dr. Portalupi developed an interest in orthodontics and decided to return to school for specialty training. In 1989 he graduated from the University of the Pacific Dental School with an orthodontic specialty certificate and a Master of Science degree.
