Plunkett & Chaw Dental - General dentist in Atlanta, GA

I recently began my dental career in Spring 2018. I have enjoyed every moment spent in the office. I love working with patients, helping them enjoy their time in our office! I want every single person that comes in our doors to feel that their needs are taken care of and then more. Seeing the smiling faces and hearing all about patients lives.

I moved to Atlanta in November 2017 from our families historic farm in Northern Virginia. I have an Organismal Biology Bachelors of Science, with a concentration in Marine Conservation Biology, from Christopher Newport University. I am currently set to start volunteering at the Georgia Aquarium, one of my favorite places. I love people almost as much as I love animals!

I love helping patients maintain their oral health and hygiene through treatment, prevention and education. I enjoy discussing dentistry as a part of total health, nutrition and healthy lifestyle; it really helps our patients 'connect the dots' when it comes to staying healthy.

I believe we have a very special practice; each team member is focused on providing optimum dentistry, and we value our relationships with our patients and their families. I look forward to seeing my patients at their returning visits and catching up on family stories and events.

We take extra time to review dental procedures and home care instructions; often we find that fear is in the 'unknown', and that by thoroughly explaining the process, we can help alleviate our patients ' concerns about dental treatment.

Vickie began her career as a Dental Hygienist in 1979. She joined our practice in 2005, and has become a tremendous resource for our patients and team through her ongoing enthusiasm for the study of dental health and patient education.

My family and I have been patients of Dr. Plunkett since 1986. Previously I worked in the practice in the late 1980s. I returned in 2012 after taking several years off to raise a family. Procedures have changed slightly over the years; however, the commitment to provide the highest level of dentistry and care for our patients has remained consistent.

We are so proud to have Betty in our practice again; our long term patients are enjoying catching up with her! Her pleasant, easygoing nature and wealth of compassion have always made her an asset to our team, twenty years ago and today!

Originally from London, England, Roshnie has been a part of the dental profession since 2014. She joined our team in 2015. Only being in the field for a few short years, she is passionate about dentistry and enthusiastic about learning new concepts.

The team at Plunkett & Chaw Dental believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In ourfamily dentistoffice we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Plunkett & Chaw Dental work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Dunwoody area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team atPlunkett & Chaw Dentalcan help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

A.Primary, or baby, teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

A.First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

A.Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

A.Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your childs primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

A.Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

A.There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Pregnancy gingivitis is gingivitis that results from the common change in hormones during pregnancy that increases blood flow to the gum tissue, increasing sensitivity, irritability and swelling in the gums.

I have always had a good experience with the employees at Plunkett & Chaw. Today was exceptional. Amanda who was the substitute hygienist was PERFECT! I felt very comfortable with her. Her gentleness allowed me to relax enough to have the cavitron used for the complete cleaning for the first time in my life!!

Dr. Chaw and Vickie performed my comprehensive exam and teeth cleaning. They both did an excellent job and also provided detailed instructions on how to better take care of my oral health. It truly felt like they cared about me as a patient rather than dollar signs (I have previously gone to other dentists that would continue to try to sell me excess services). I am happy to have found such a great dental practice!

Dr. Chaw is meticulous in all of the services she renders. She really cares about the function and appearance of all restorative work and follows up with a phone call to ensure you are feeling well after she performs the work. Betty, the assistant, and Vickie, the hygienist are wonderful staff members too. I feel very comfortable referring family and friends to this practice.

I moved to Atlanta during Covid, and hadn't taken the time to find a dentist, so this was my first dental visit in over 3 years. Dr. Chaw was so caring, thorough, and patient when it came to discovering and educating me on my dental issues. It feels so great knowing I've found her and her amazing staff!

I've been seeing Dr. Chaw for over 5 years, and she has been amazing! I had crippling dental anxiety from previous bad experiences elsewhere and she really takes the time and care to make sure it's as pleasant of an experience as possible. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would!

I've been going to this dentist my whole life, going on 34 years. Very kind, professional, and competent staff. It's NOT the kind of place that pushes unwarranted procedures, which I encountered at a corporate chain while in college. This business harkens back to the time when Dunwoody was a quiet town and successful businesses were established by word of mouth. So here's my soapbox. Dr. Plunkett & Dr. Chaw run a wonderful business that's welcoming and feels like an extension of my family. 5 stars. Every time.
