He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Nevada State Dental Association, the Northern Nevada Dental Society and the Progressive Study Group.
Dr. Mark Handelin is a Reno native and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a biology degree in 1996. He then worked as a fisheries biologist before returning to school and graduating Salutatorian with his dental degree from the University of Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco in 2001. Dr. Mark practiced general dentistry in Reno prior to returning to San Francisco to pursue orthodontics. He returned to UOP to earn a Master of Science in Orthodontics in 2005. He has practiced orthodontics exclusively since 2005 with Drs. Pitts.
He is a member of many professional groups in dentistry including the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, and the Nevada State Dental Association. He has been past president of the Nevada Orthodontic Society, Northern Nevada Dental Society, and is currently in line to become president of the Nevada Dental Association.
Dr. Mark has followed Dr. Toms footsteps and became an Associate Professor at the University of the Pacific and teaches part-time to the graduate orthodontic students. This passion for learning and education has him actively involved and presenting various orthodontic concepts and topics to many local and national dental and orthodontic study groups including the Sierra Society for Dental Excellence (Seattle Study Club), the Progressive Study Group, the P2 Study Club, the Sierra Nevada Study Club, and the Silver Sage Study Club.
Dr. Handelin has two lovely young girls, Keelyn and Laurel, and an exceptional wife Catie. They enjoy spendingtime together and playing outdoors as much as possible. In the spare time that he finds, he enjoys fishing, hiking, photography, and home improvement projects.

I was very impressed! I had a broken lingual permanent wire that needed to be replaced. They got me in quickly and repaired it. I had previously got a quote from another local orthodontist and Pitts was $600 less expensive for same procedure and I think the whole office had a more relaxed kind vibe. Thank you

Pitts Orthodontics deserves more than a five star rating. I have been a daily headache sufferer for the past 17 years. I would wake up in morning with a headache, almost every single day. I would go to bed at least four nights a week with a headache. I have had a sleep study done, I've seen a neurologist, a chiropractor, I have invested in every fancy pillow on the market and still no relief. I often thought it was job related, because ironically I have been a dental assistant for 17 years. I just figured it was from looking down every day, eight hours a day while in patient care! Never having orthodontics, I was ready to make a few esthetic changes with my smile at 35 years old. Little did I know, it would change my life for the better in a way I was not expecting! Amazing news, I have NOT had a headache one time since having my braces put on 10 weeks ago. By having brackets on all my teeth, I have had bite turbos bonded on my front teeth to keep me from hitting my brackets and to also help my bite. This also keeps me from clinching on my back teeth and flexing the extremely strong muscle in my jaw. In turn has helped relieve my headaches from over working my joint and muscles. I am so excited to have the most perfect teeth and smile... the relief of not having headaches is PRICELESS! Thank you Arnie, Mark and all of your amazing team. I am so happy to be in your care!!

I have known Drs. Pitts and Handelin for almost 20 years since we are all part of an International orthodontic study club that has met annually since 1999. Over that time, I have come to appreciate that these guys are truly amazing orthodontists who really care about their patients and work like crazy to provide the best care that is possible today. I recommend Dr.Pitts and Handelin without hesitation to anyone seeking the BEST care for themselves or their children.

As a board certified orthodontist, I can honestly say that Dr. Pitts and Dr. Handelin are 2 amazing orthodontists. I have visited their office several times and have always been impressed by their customer service and their impeccable results. I have been an orthodontist for 25 years and have personally known Dr. Pitts and Dr. Handelin for 9 years. I can say with absolute confidence and certainty that these orthodontists are two of the finest orthodontic specialists with whom I have come in contact. I've not been treated as a patient here, but my niece and family say it's the best! I say this is hands down the coolest office ever! The staff here are amazingly friendly and the whole place is comfy and unique. If I move here, this will be my dentist! :)

I just left an in-office course at Pitts Orthodontics! The office was packed with orthodontists attending from around the world that desire to improve their orthodontic knowledge and skill. Dr. Pitts and Dr. Handelin and the Pitts Orthodontic team collaborate to provide truly world class orthodontic treatment that the rest of the world would like to emulate. Any orthodontist or even a general dentist can put braces on. However, it takes an elite orthodontic specialist to diagnose and treat and finish cases with beautiful, healthy smiles. I myself would get treatment from Pitts Orthodontics!!

the best ortho in town by far. (or at least among the top) perhaps not the cheapest, but every other orthodontist was saying they needed to break my jaw to fix my teeth. But pitts instead took the time to diagnose and solve the issue. 5/5

I've known Drs. Arnie Pitts and Mark Handelin for 20 years, and they are absolutely spectacular doctors. Not only do the use the latest technology, they are members of an international study club of elite orthodontists who are constantly pushing the envelop and staying on the leading edge. They are, without a doubt, the best and most progressive orthodontists in the Reno area, and I often rely on their expertise and seek their counsel when I have a difficult case to discuss.
