Temporomandibular joint 'TMJ' syndrome, also known as TMD, is a disorder of the temporamandibular joint and the jaw muscles. This hinge is formed by the temporal bone of the skull and the lower jaw, or mandible.

TMJ is often called the 'Great Imposter', because it is overlooked as a cause of problems or mistaken for some other disease. The causes of TMJ are complex. The TMJ tendency may be inherited or the result of childhood injuries. The symptoms can lie dormant for some time and then suddenly appear for no apparent reason. Because of the diversity of symptoms and contributing factors, many people seek help for years before receiving an accurate diagnosis.

The temporomandibular joint is unique in that it is made up of two separate joints that work together to control the movements of the jaw. Changes in a patients bite can cause the movements of the jaw to pop or grind when opening. When the disc does not move correctly with the jaw it can cause pain. Several things may cause this change to occur including; missing teeth, dental work, injury of trauma to jaw, grinding and clenching.

Since our TMJ patients are fitted with Gelb appliances, many, with prior orthodontic treatment, ask if their TMJ appliance can be worn in conjunction with their orthodontic retainers. The answer is yes! The two mouth pieces accomplish two very different functions. Orthodontic retainers are made to retain teeth in a certain position while TMJ appliances are designed to reposition the jaw joint in a certain position. For the convenience of our TMJ patients we are able to design the appliance to fit comfortably over the orthodontic retainer.

We have found that many patients with TMJ disorders do not sleep properly and this can cause added stress to the jaw. There are many stages of sleep, the deepest stage is the one that relaxes the muscles and allows them a chance to rest. We find that most patients do not reach that stage and therefore are not properly rested. They awake with their muscles feeling tight and tender.

I've been a patient of Dr. Sharp since the 90s. He's an excellent, trustworthy, down to earth, dentist with a phenomenal Assistant, Cindy. The genuine care and attention shown by them is so appreciated! I must admit that I was a little worried when he and Dr. Tully became a team because I didn't know what that would mean for me in the future concerning the care of my teeth. However, I'm glad they teamed up! Dr. Tully did a procedure for me on Thursday for which I was very nervous about due to a past tramatizing experience with an oral surgeon not affiliated with doctors Tully or Sharp. He and his Assistants took great care of me and he even call that evening after the procedure to make sure I was ok! I'm thankful for this experience!

Very disappointed. Had a crown put on and paid cash. Was consistently in pain for months. Told to return to provider who did root canal. That provider tested and explained how it was the crown. Went back to Tully For mutual visits and paid over 200 just to be told it wasn't their problem. No ownership or solution. Will find a better provider. Would not recommend for this type of work.

I booked an appointment a month ago. I called the day of my appointment to have my information updated and received a call back from Kim stating I didn't have an appointment. The appointment was booked by Dawn and I specifically asked for a late afternoon time slot. I had already put in time to take off work. I was then given another appointment for 6 weeks from now. No thank you.

Dr Tully is by far the best dentist I've been to. No pain during any procedure. Done right the first time. He listens to you and he doesn't rush you. The staff are all excellent. The office is clean...and they have windows you can look out on wildlife. Relaxing....I bet you can't say that about your dentist. I highly recommend him for your dental care.

I am very pleased that Dr. Tully was recommended to me last year by other family members who, like I, find him to be very personable and professional in his delivery of high quality dental care. Dr. Tully's team of administrative and technical staff have served us well and I am particularly pleased with the dental hygienist, Abby, who provides me excellent care as well as informative counseling and recommendations for personal dental hygiene.

This dental office is the best I've ever seen. They are kind and efficient. I have enjoyed seeing my hygienist Rhonda 2x/year and Dr. Tully has such a pleasant spirit. The office is updated with current technology. The way the make a crown in office blew me away! I asked and they were happy to show me! It was so cool!!

I had the experience of my life with a dental care facility and staff From the moment that I walked into Dr Tullys' dental office building, there were nothing but positive vibes, the waiting area was very clean and organized, the exam rooms were the same, it was like the cleaning personnel had just walked out. The entire staff gets the highest recognition I can provide. Starting with the receptionist, so courteous, knowledgeable, well prepared to receive clients and polite. The oral hygienist ( beth) treated me as if I was an embassies from a foreign country, she took the time to ensure that I was comfortable, explained everything that I needed to expect, took the patience to make sure that I knew what she was doing and how it would help me. The doctor came in at the point would confirm what the x-rays had found and how to proceed with the appropriate treatment. I will recommend this dental facility and staff to anyone with a need for dental care.

I started going to Dr. Tully for TMJ back in 2012. I now live in Florida 4 hours away and still drive to see him. He is an excellent dentist and has a great bedside manner. I have always feared the dentist but I would rather see him than anyone else. Thank you Dr. Tully.
