Athens Hometown Orthodontist, Philip K. Arnold, D.D.S., M.S., P.C., was born in Dayton, Rhea County, Tennessee, but moved extensively since his father was in the United States Army for over 30 years. He lived in many states such as Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Missouri, and overseas in Athens, Greece.

Dr. Arnold earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, then went on to complete his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry, Memphis, Tennessee. While in dental school, Dr. Arnold joined the Early Commissioning Program, and after graduation, he served three years in the United States Air Force at the rank of Captain. He was stationed at Whiteman AFB, Missouri and Utapao AFB, Thailand. While at Whiteman AFB, Dr. Arnold was selected for advanced surgical training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. While there, he received training in intravenous sedation and the undertaking of more involved surgical procedures, such as full-mouth extractions, cyst removal, ridge trims and the handling of the more difficult types of impactions and infections. After returning to base, Dr. Arnold did rotations at the Whiteman Hospital dental clinic where he handled the surgical needs of regional Air Force retirees and dependents, entitled through the Champus program. While stationed at Utapao AFB, Thailand, Dr. Arnold was placed in charge of the small dental clinic located in the Base Hospital Annex. He also participated in the Accelerated Pacification Campaign, which was tasked with providing regular medical/dental assistance to the rural jungle communities toward the Cambodian border, in return for their part in providing intelligence and protection from infiltration. For his service during the Vietnam campaign, Dr. Arnold was decorated with the National Defense Service Metal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Metal, the Vietnam Service Metal and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

At the conclusion of hostilities, Dr. Arnold was granted an early release from military duty and returned home, serving a year with the Tennessee Department of Health working out of a Mobile Dental Clinic in Dayton, Tennessee. Dr. Arnold then earned his Master of Science post-graduate degree in Orthodontics from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio and was finally able to begin his orthodontic practice in Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee. His first office was located on Park Street, but he later moved to its present location at 2 South Hill Street (across the street from the Courthouse Annex in the Madison Park Shopping Center) where his practice has remained for more than 20 years.

Dr. Arnold has many family ties in the Athens community. By 1840, his great-great grandfather, Henry Arnold, had settled in McMinn County in the Rogers Creek Community, making Dr. Arnold related to most of the Arnold's in McMinn County. Doris, his wife, is also an avid genealogist. While researching local records, she has uncovered additional ancestors who were early settlers of surrounding communities. The Burton, Minnis, Grubbs, Womack, Zeigler, Reynolds, Sexton, McKenzie, Jordan and Fine families are among those related to Dr. Arnold. Dr. Arnold has had the privilege of straightening numerous relatives teeth and getting to know them on a personal level. This may help explain why he felt so comfortable moving to Athens in the first place.

Arnold, D.D.S., M.S., P.C., Athens Hometown Orthodontist, is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Southern Association of Orthodontists, Tennessee Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Tennessee Dental Association, Chattanooga Area Dental Society and the Tri-County Dental Study Club, where he stays up-to-date in the field of orthodontics by attending meetings and taking continuing education courses.
