Since 1994, Dr. Phelps has been helping people from across Wilmington as a general dentist by providing the best dental care available in the most relaxing environment possible. He received a bachelors of science in Biology from Penn State in 1987 and went on to earn his doctorate of dental surgery at the University of North Carolina in Chapel four years later. A year later, Dr. Phelps started his dental career with a one year General Practice Residency with the United States Air Force followed by two years as a general dentist at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. While attending UNC Chapel Hill, Dr. Phelps met his wife Lisa who was also pursuing a career in dentistry. The couple eventually married and moved to Wilmington, NC to start Phelps Family Dentistry.

Hes completed numerous continuing education classes over the years, including courses at the renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Hes also an adjunct faculty member for the UNC School of Dentistry, East Carolina School of Dental Medicine, and Cape Fear Community College dental assisting and hygiene programs. His current memberships include the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, the North Carolina Dental Society, and a Fellow Candidate for the International Congress of Oral Implantology, where he received his accreditation in 2017. Dr. Phelps is also licensed in NC to provide IV conscious sedation since 1994. Hes also been recognized every year since 2011 by his peers as a TopDentist in Wilmington and www.usatopdentists.com.

Outside of the office, you might find Dr. Phelps traveling to Peru or Honduras as a volunteer dentist with St. Marys outreach; something hes been doing since 1998. He also enjoys spending time with Lisa and their four children: Chad, Craig, Anna, and Abby. Dr. Phelps likes staying active with racket sports, basketball, biking, hiking, and travel.

Dr. Lisa firmly believes in helping people of all ages and stages of life have a healthy smile in an environment thats relaxing and judgment-free. She completed three years of undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with an early acceptance into the School of Dentistry. In 1991, she received her doctorate of dental surgery and went on to complete a one year General Practice Residency at Offutt Air Force Base a year later where she served from 1991-1994. She enjoys membership in the American Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry, and North Carolina Dental Society.

Dr. Lisa is also licensed to provide both IV conscious sedation and oral sedation in NC. Shes also an International Congress of Oral Implantology fellowship candidate in the placement of implants from the Triangle Dental Institute completing 168 hours of continuing education learning about everything related to the science of implantology. Dr. Lisa also enjoys sharing her dental knowledge as an adjunct faculty member for the UNC School of Dentistry.

Shes been married to Dr. Dan for nearly three decades, and the happy couple has four grown children: Chad, Craig, Abby, and Anna. You might see Dr. Lisa as a regular volunteer for St. Marys Dental Clinic downtown, and across the world on mission trips in places such as Peru, Brazil, and Honduras. She also volunteers regularly with GLOW the Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington where she works with at-risk youth. Dr. Lisa believes in staying healthy and active through tennis, golf, paddle-boarding, and wakeboarding when shes not at the office caring for her family of patients.

Jackie has been working in dentistry for nearly a decade as a fantastic dental hygienist. Shes always busy around the office helping patients, assessing their oral health needs, providing thorough cleanings, and teaching them about all the things they can do at home to keep their smile bright and healthy. Jackie will tell you that she chose a career in dentistry as a dental hygienist because she had dental work done too. After that, she knew she wanted to help people just like her dentist helped her have healthy teeth.

She loves helping people smile and feel more confident. If she wasnt working in dentistry, Jackie says shed probably be doing something with animal rescue. Jackie is energetic, thoughtful, helpful, fun, and outgoing. Outside of the office, she loves spending time with her husband and dogs.

If youre looking for someone who knows a thing or two about teeth, talk to Sue. She brings over 40 years of dentistry experience to our office where shes been part of the team for nearly two decades. Sue says she loves the bond she forms with patients along with the camaraderie with fellow team members. As a teenager, Sue says she was intrigued with braces, going to the orthodontist, and treatment techniques prompting her to choose a career in dentistry.

She loves helping people conquer their dental phobias and staying up-to-date with her continuing education to continue to grow in the dental field. Sue is loyal, dependable, caring, energetic, and genuine. Shes a proud American from a Marine Corps family who enjoys cooking, walking on the beach, collecting shells, pet sitting, fishing, and helping at her daughters boutique. Sue also volunteers with St. Marys Dental Clinic and serves the public on various missionary trips.

Marlene has three decades of dental experience and has been working at our office for 20 years and counting. As a registered dental hygienist, Marlene is responsible for cleaning teeth, taking x-rays, showing patients how to brush and floss, screening for gum disease, and review patient health history. She wanted to pursue a career in dentistry because she didnt have good dental care when she was a child. Marlene says working in this office is unique because of how much we care about patients like theyre family and because were able to offer sedation options to patients with severe dental phobias.

She really loves working with people and seeing how happy they are when their smile is healthy. Marlene is loyal, courteous, calm, responsible, and caring. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, and being with her three adult children and dog. She also occasionally volunteers with Second Helpings at the Good Shepherd House.

Crystal has been involved in the dental field for over 16 years, bringing a wealth of knowledge and training with her to the Phelps Family Dentistry team. She completed her undergraduate and post-graduate education at the College of Southern Maryland, through the Maryland State Dental Board. Crystal also values her 16 years of on-the-job training that has prepared her for a variety of dental and office management situations. As our office manager, she is responsible for taking care of patients behind-the-scenes needs, assisting the doctors to treat their dental family, and guiding the office staff in treating each and every patient as a family member/friend. Crystal loves seeing the smiles on each patients face at the end of their office visit. Her passion for patient care is what drives her in her position at Phelps Family Dentistry. She loves that she gets to be a part of a practice that brings such excellent care and attention to each and every person that comes through the door. When Crystal isnt at work, you can find her spending time with family and friends, traveling, enjoying good food, and attending concerts and movies with friends.

Candy is from Michigan. She moved to Wilmington in 2012. Candy has done many things in the dental field such as being a lab tech, dental hygiene assistant and a front desk receptionist. She joined Phelps Family Dentistry in October 2020. She loves to travel, and playing softball and volleyball. She loves Vietnamese cuisine and sushi. She loves sushi so much so thats what she named her handsome Shih Tzu dog. She married her Junior High School sweetheart Roger. She looks forward to meeting you and helping you take care of your dental needs.
