H. Derick Phan, D.D.S., C.A.G.S. Dr. H. Derick Phan grew up in San Jose, California, and attended Leland High School, where he was a star volleyball player and track and field athlete. Its a dream come true for him to be back to his home city, making beautiful smiles for the community that he grew up in. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California Riverside, where he continued to play volleyball as well as work as a dental assistant and as a girls high school volleyball coach, discovering his two passions and talents: making beautiful smiles and volleyball. He followed his dream and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. Dr. Phan was then accepted to a prestigious Graduate Residency Program at the Loma Linda VA Medical Center.
He went into private practice in the Salinas/Monterey Bay area as a family and cosmetic dentist, and then spent a year specializing in pediatric dentistry. He then switched coasts once again and completed his orthodontic residency at Jacksonville University Dental School of Orthodontics, where he completed his thesis on Invisalign and interproximal reduction.This extensive experience and rigorous study has allowed Dr. Phan to become one of Californias leading orthodontists.
Dr. Phan has been in practice for over 15 years now and was featured as PHOENIX Magazines Top Orthodontist for 2006 and 2007. He was voted Best Orthodontist by But Tre Magazine in 2007 and received the Comfort Dental Gold Award for Clinical Excellence in 2008. He strives to stay on the forefront of the newest orthodontic techniques and technology by traveling all over the United States (and sometimes the world) for continuing education courses. He also serves as an Opal Evaluation Counsel member to help test, evaluate, research, and develop the latest orthodontic products.Besides creating beautiful smiles, Dr. Phan enjoys many outdoor activities and is an avid snowboarder. He has also been a high school girls volleyball coach for over 12 years and has coached in five different states, taking his teams to the state and national level. He is a volleyball player as well, having competed at the high school, college, and professional club level. He still competes as a track and field athlete to this day, just as he did 25 years ago in high school. As you can see from his pictures, he has stayed the path over the years and still does all the things he loves in life sports and making beautiful smiles. Chances are, in his spare time you might see him at your local high school gym, on the track ,or on the ski slopes. He is an active supporter of our local schools and contributes thousands of dollars every year to our schools, youth programs, and fundraising events. Dr. Phan is the largest provider for the foster kids of Santa Clara County, offering (and often donating) his services. Dr. Phan belongs to and is a member of many dental organizations. Dr. Moon was born and raised in Los Angeles. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley and receive her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University Of Southern California. During her dental training, she discovered her love of orthodontics and continued her training at USC for her degree in Orthodontics and Masters in Craniofacial Biology. She completed her thesis on the effect of orthognathic surgery on the condyle. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Moon followed her husband to the Big Apple, New York City, and practiced orthodontics there until moving to the Bay Area.
Her hobbies are many types of arts and crafts. She is a self-taught seamstress and crocheter. She dreamed of making her own wedding dress and succeeded. She also crochets small hats and other accessories for infants, and enjoys amigurumi.
Dr. Moon prides herself in attention to detail for both in her personal and professional life, whether it be for her hobby or finishing an orthodontic case. She continues to update her education by attending continuing education courses and conventions, and reading journals. She also received her Board Certification from the American Board of Orthodontists.
Dr. Golnaz Kavand obtained her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from Boston University with High Honors. Following that, she moved to the Midwest and obtained a Master of Science in Dentistry and a clinical certificate in Orthodontics from Indiana University. During residency, Dr. Kavand studied the impact of palatal expansion on upper airway volume and published the results of her study in the prestigious journal, The Angle Orthodontist. In addition, Dr. Kavand has a Masters in Dental Public Health from The University of Iowa, with a focus on the dental esthetic perception in young adolescents and their parents.
Dr. Kavand has worked in multiple private practices in Ohio and Southern California and is excited to bring her expertise to serve patients in the Bay Area. Dr. Kavand is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and an active member of both the American and the California Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Phan and his team are the best! I had braces as a teen (way way way a long time ago) and recently needed braces again. Dr. Phan and Joel took so much time and effort to work through my complicated case and provide the most effective and comfortable care, at a reasonable price. Both of my kids are also receiving excellent treatment here with their braces. Our positive experience has convinced my hubbie to get Invisalign with Dr. Phan. The Almaden location is super convenient for the many Bret Harte and Leland students who can walk to the office after school.

I started my journey with looking up different orthodontists online via Yelp. I received a couple quotes via email and shopped around. I communicated with Janet, an absolute Sweetheart. Surfside Dental (DR Phan) was by far the best price. What I liked most is that they were direct, easy to work with, and their vision for me was clear. There were no hidden charges and did not overcomplicate things. They kept the process, payments, etc. very simple and easy to understand. I never felt like I was being upcharged. I had a corrective Jaw surgery case and this is their wheel house. Before I met DR Phan, I was confused on where to even start. After meeting him, everything made sense. Before I felt like it was just a dream, Dr Phan made it a reality. Nothing felt better than walking out of his office, and finally having a plan. He did that for me. So thank you for that! They saw my results/vision before I did. Dr Phan was enthused about my case and made me feel very comfortable about my journey. He made sure I had the right insurance for my case (In my case, It was Kaiser). He advised me of the high quality, and expertise of the Doctors he works with. He showed me Before and Afters. I was immediately sold. Little did i know I would be in such great hands. Between Joel, Janet, and Sandra, they are amazing. They are absolutely a well oiled machine and super team. They could not be any nicer and they immediately became like family. I look forward to seeing them on my monthly appointments. They are genuinely very nice and warm people. Nothing fake here. The rest of the staff is very nice as well. Dr Phan hires the best. They squeezed me in when a wire was bothersome. Joel would even skip lunches just to help me! Joel deserves a raise!! He is the best. I had a crown replaced mid treatment. They accomodated. I can not say enough good things about the office. I had my surgery March 2021 and my results were terrific. I finally had the bite I wanted. My underbite was asthetically not what I wanted and medically gave me problems. It was a long Journey due to COVID delays, however I am glad I finally got it done. I would not change a thing, and definitely not change offices. This was the best experience I could have hoped for. Recommendations: Although It is said Kaiser will not see you until you are surgically ready, Kaiser has no issues looking at your case. It is good to ensure your surgeon and your Ortho are on the same page on what is expected orthodontically for your surgeon to be well prepared. Also, if you have any crowns you will replace, I recommend bleaching and getting the crown done before you start. When you are finished with Ortho/Surgery the original retainers you order will fit long term. Otherwise, if you replace the crown after you get retainers, you will need extra set of retainers since the original retainers will not fit. Watch youtube videos before surgery on things you need. They were super helpful. Especially condiment bottles for eating/drinking. Get a neck fan for easier breathing during inflammation. Liquid Benedryl/Advil helps. I am posting this without before and Afters. I may update later with pictures. Good luck on your Journey! Go with Dr Phan and Surfside dental. They are the best choice!!

GREAT SERVICE! Highly recommend coming here! Joel, Sandra, Janet as well as Dr. Phan were very helpful & kind. They answered all the questions we had. We went there because we had some questions & right away they took our X-rays & the next day my 3 brothers & I were able to get our braces!!

I came here after paying so much money and time to fix an infection I had from the old "braces certified place" that required me to remove my wisdom teeth due to "excessive overcrowding". This made my gums horrible and I thought I wouldn't recover. I went to Mr.Phans office and the staff is just so amazing. For the consult Mr.Phan was very lovely and took me in. He explained that the place I went to was probably a bad option since they focused on braces,cleanings,extractions etc. Mr.Phan is a certified professional and will do anything to make sure you're expectations are met. I just can't praise this place enough! Literally if you want braces only go here! Don't go to those other places where their "orthodontist" only comes once a month. This place is the best! Also Mr.Phan hires the best staff so that's a plus :)

this is THE place to go get your braces and other orthopedic needs. what makes this place amazing is the staff because from the moment you walk in to your first appointment to the moment they take off your braces and future retainer checks, the staff here will brighten your day and make you feel at home. If you are looking for the best in the Bay Area look no further. This is best orthodontist you will find in the area. I went to serval different offices before making my decision and this office instantly stood out in the beginning. They use the best equipment, have the best staff, and their service quality is a 6 star. I just finished my treatment never did I have to wait more than 5 minutes to be attended. They have very flexible schedules and for basic monthly check ups you're in and out within 15 minutes. With COVID they adapted the best possible way they could of. They bought several of the best air purifiers, high tech temperature machine, and constant disinfecting in the office. If this is a concern of yours because of COVID no need to worry here they're on it. I couldn't be happier with the whole process. I'm glad I didn't cheap out and went with this office. Every penny was worth it. Thanks again Dr. Phan! THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS!!

My 9yo son comes to Dr. Phan's office for his braces. We've been coming here for over a year now and have seen dramatic changes in my son's smile! My son's confidence and self esteem is also more positive because of it- this is everything to me and our family<3 The space is clean, modern and kid friendly- self service check in, complimentary (refrigerated) water, multiple waiting areas/seating, and if you have kids they will absolutely LOVE the coin operated toy machines! We love offices that have these because it gives the kids incentive to follow through with their appointment! My son doesn't mind going to his appointments and his sisters always want to tag along :) Thank you Dr. Phan and staff!
