Dr. Matthew Pershing is a 1996 graduate of Hastings College and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1999. Dr. Pershing joined Pershing Orthodontics after completing his Orthodontic Residency program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. He was honored by the Academy of General Dentistry with the Senior Dental Student Award and received the Outstanding Senior Student Award in Orthodontics and Prosthodontics.
Dr. Pershing served four years as a Captain in the US Army where he completed a General Practice Residency. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan / Uzbekistan) serving as a General Dental and Triage officer.
Dr. Pershing is a fourth generation dental graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry and a third generation orthodontist. He is pleased to have joined his fathers orthodontic practice. Dr. Robert Butz, Dr. Pershings grandfather, established the original practice in 1956. Dr. Butz was in the first graduating class of orthodontists from the University of Nebraska Orthodontic Residency Program.
Dr. Pershing is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Nebraska Society of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Nebraska Dental Association, and Adams County Dental Society.
Dr. Pershing and his wife, Stephanie, have one daughter and one son. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his young family. His hobbies include snow skiing, golf and spending time at the ocean.

Dr. Pershing earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Nebraska in 1970. He was a member of The US Army ROTC and was a Distinguished Military Graduate. Dr. Pershing continued his education at the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry and graduated in 1973 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and as a member of OKU, a dental honor society for academics and leadership.
From 1973 to 1975, Dr. Pershing served his country by directing a pediatric dental section in the US Army. He completed his Masters of Science degree while receiving his Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry in 1977.
Dr. Pershing joined the orthodontic practice of his father-in-law, Dr. Robert Butz, in 1977. Dr. Butz established his practice in 1956, and at the time, it was the first orthodontic practice in south central Nebraska. Dr. Pershing has worked very hard to honor the tradition of excellence set by Dr. Butz.
Dr. Pershing is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the American Association of Orthodontists, Midwestern Society of Orthodontists, Nebraska Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, American Dental Association, Nebraska Dental Association, Nebraska Southwest District Dental Society, the American College of Dentists, and the Adams County Dental Society. He is Board Certified in Orthodontics and a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Pershing and his wife, Cathy, have two sons and four grandchildren. During his free time the doctor enjoys golfing, snow skiing, auto racing, and sailing, all of which are more enjoyable when done with family.
Tammy is originally from Bayard, Nebraska, and graduated from the dental assisting program at Central Community College in Hastings. She joined the Pershing Orthodontic team in 1994. Tammy holds certifications in radiology, CPR and coronal polishing. She is responsible for chair side assisting, fabricating orthodontic appliances and taking diagnostic records. Tammy enjoys scrapbooking and spending time with her husband and 2 children.
Marlene is originally from Wilcox, Nebraska. She graduated from the dental assisting program in Central Community College in Hastings, and joined Pershing Orthodontics in 1981. Marlene holds certifications in radiology, coronal polishing and CPR. Marlene is responsible for taking diagnostic records, fabricating orthodontic appliances, clinic supplies and chair side assisting. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, antiques, car shows and spending time with her family.
Jessica has been a dental assistant with our office since June 2005. She graduated from the dental assisting program at Central Community College in 2002. She has multiple responsibilities including assisting the doctors chair side with all procedures, taking X-rays, sterilizing instruments and helping answer any questions patients may have regarding their orthodontic treatment. In her free time, Jessica enjoys spending time with her husband, Addison and children Allee and Graham. You may find her traveling whenever she gets the chance.
Karen joined Pershing Orthodontics in 2017. She graduated from CCC dental assisting program in May of 2017 with her certification in dental assisting, coronal polishing and dental x-ray. Her role in the office is to assist Dr. Pershing chairside with any and all types of procedures as well as taking records. Karen is essential to our patient care due to being bi-lingual. She assists our Spanish speaking patients as well as translating for parents. When Karen is not at the office, she enjoys spending time with her two sons and her husband.
