Perio Indy - General dentist in Indianapolis, IN

Dr. Sarah Herd comes from a family of dentists. Her father Dr. Richard M. Herd, Jr. practices general dentistry on the east side of Indianapolis and her grandfather, Dr. Richard M. Herd, Sr. was an oral surgeon. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School and then Valparaiso University before attending Indiana University School of Dentistry for both her dental degree and masters degree in periodontics.

Dr. Herd is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, meaning that she has achieved the highest possible level of education in her field. Becoming Board Certified in Periodontology means that Dr. Herd not only completed dental school plus her three year residency in periodontics, but she has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty. This includes taking comprehensive oral and written examinations in order to demonstrate expertise covering all phases and treatments of periodontal diseases and dental implants. She attends continuing education courses throughout the year. Additionally, she teaches dental and hygiene students at Indiana University School of Dentistry and participates in student run outreach clinics.

In her free time, Dr. Herd likes to pretend she is training for a triathlon and run, swim, or bike. In good weather, you can find her on her bicycle on one of the trails in Indianapolis. In bad weather, or lazy days, she enjoys hanging out with her three dogs and reading good books. She is always looking for recommendations! Dr. Herd also enjoys live music and can be found wherever anyone good is playing!

I have a mouth of issues. Including bone loss on my bottom teeth from periodontal disease. I went to her and I couldn't be happier. She went over every step possible and she is very kind and patient. I am nervous at the dentist and she makes me feel so much better! Hopefully the plan we have worked out can save my teeth.

I love Dr. Herd and her team! I have been visiting them for more than 3 years until I had to move to another state. I was so afraid of going to see dentists, but Dr. Herd and her team made me feel at home!

Used to go here but was dissatisfied with the high turnover of dental hygienist. Used to have a really conscientious hard working hygienist who cleaned my teeth well and motivated me to floss but then Dr Herd brought her hygienist back who had been in a car accident and who had eithe neck or shoulder injury and insisted on cleaning my teeth with an ultrasound machine and refused to clean them manually perhaps due to the discomfort she would feel with her back or neck problem still persistent. Also she used to have a really nice front desk person who had personality. The one she has now has no personality at all. When one sees cracks at the base cracks on top can't be far away

Dr Sarah was able to fix a problem that the regular dentist wanted to solve by pulling all my teeth and giving me dentures! She and her staff were wonderful to work with and did a great job. I can't say is was painless, but they were able to save my teeth!

The woman at the front desk is very nice but they need a better system for taking temperature. My 16 year old son waited 2 months for an appointment that he needed badly. Got there today & the forehead thermometer said 102.4deg. We waited awhile but it was warm in the office & he had a mask on & it still registered same temp. I felt him & he did not feel feverish & didn't feel sick. She did take it on his wrist & it said 98.4deg. The nurse said that was not an acceptable way to do it. They made us leave. We got home & his temperature was 98.4deg. We took it under his tongue several times throughout the eve & it was still 98.4deg. This was the same temp they got from wrist. I called to make them aware & they said this was their procedure. They then said it would be two more months till they could get him in again. It's unfortunate that we rearranged our day & waited so long for the appointment & were turned away because of a ineffective method of temperature taking.

I have to say that this place is wonderful! For starters, Sonja at the front desk was able to give me an appointment fairly quickly because someone else cancelled theirs. She was very friendly and very understanding. The day of my appointment I was nervous as could be and when I met Dr. Herd I told her that and she immediately told me that everything was going to be fine and there was nothing to worry about. She explained everything to me and actually told me that my mouth was very healthy compared to most who come in and that my situation wasn't really as bad as I thought it was. She was so sweet and helped me understand what I can do to keep my mouth healthy. I'm actually looking forward to my follow up appointment in October...and that's unusual for a dental appointment. I highly recommend Perio-Indy!

I was not happy about going to see a Perio doctor about my teeth. I work in the dental field and my first thought was needles and pain. But that all changed when I became a patient of Dr. Herd's. She is really great and her patient care is extraordinary. She made me feel comfortable with her work and addressed all of my concerns. Sonja is the best she runs the front office quickly and is very professional. She came to the back during one of my appointments to address a concern I had; that made me feel as though I was the offices main concern. Brianna her assistant is wonderful she is going to school to be a hygienist; and she is great with patients. I make sure she is in the room whenever I have an appointment she keeps me calm and she is a great assistant. I love Perio Indy!!!
