Michael C. Cabassa, DDS, MS has been setting the highest standards of excellence in periodontics and implant surgery since 2000. He earned his BS degree at Fordham University and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in NY. He also earned a MS degree from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Dr. Cabassa completed a general practice residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and a specialized residency in periodontics & implants at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD.
An esteemed member of the dental community, Michael C. Cabassa, DDS, MS is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and an active member in many leading dental organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Periodontology, the Tri-County Dental Association, the New Jersey Society of Periodontists and the Northeast Society of Periodontists.
Dr. Cabassa is currently aCaptainin the US Navy Reserves and is assigned to the 4th Dental Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps. He is dedicated to providing state of the art care and treatment to his patients using the latest techniques and equipment.
Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Gum disease has two primary stages. If diagnosed and treated in the first stage, the condition can be reversed and tooth loss can usually be prevented. In order to prevent gum disease,practice good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups twice a year.
This stage only affects the soft tissue of the gums, and the patient may not experience any discomfort. Although the symptoms may be very mild, it is important to diagnose gum disease in this early stage before it progresses to periodontitis.
Periodontitis is the name for more advanced periodontal disease and if permitted to progress to this point, not only the gums are affected but the bone structures supporting the teeth will be compromised.
A build-up of bacteria causes Gingivitis. In its early stages, inflammation around the gums is observable, with gum tissues appearing red and swollen. Gums that are easily irritated or that bleed during tooth brushing indicate the presence of Gingivitis. Removal of the plaque buildup is necessary to prevent the development of gum disease.
As the gums become more inflamed, they start to pull away from the teeth, forming spaces known as periodontal pockets. Food, bacteria, and plaque begin to collect in the pockets, leading to infection. The surrounding bone becomes damaged both by bacterial toxins and by the immune systemsresponse to infection.

Please arrive a few minutes early to allow time to complete the medical/dental health questionnaire, the patient information form, and the financial information form, if you have not previously done so.
Your first visit will be a comprehensive examination and assessment of your case, includinga review of information provided by your dentist. We will discuss the ideal treatment option(s) with a thorough discussion about benefits, risks, and alternatives. We will also explain the procedures involved and the treatment process. Any questions you may have will be addressed at this time.
Digital x-rays reduce the amount of radiation needed as compared to film x-rays. The improved diagnostic capability of digital x-rays and the ability to view the x-rays on a computer screen allow the patient to better understand and follow treatment. Digital x-rays are instant, there is no longer a need to develop the film. Digital x-rays save time and increase patient care. Its also a very green technology. By eliminating film, developer and chemical waste it is better for you and the environment!
Using Electronic Medical Records our practice is able to quickly and accurately access patient information in order to provide the utmost in patient care. This helps to ensure patient confidentiality as well as reduce the need for paper. Using a digital format allows for quick access to your information when needed for insurance records yet provides a secure filing system.
Anintra-oral cameracombines the latest video technologies with dental care. Both the patient and dentist can see detailed images of the teeth and mouth in real time. With an intraoral camera, you are able to better understand what is happening in your mouth and review the status of your oral health.
Traditionally, teeth are polished using a rotating rubber cup and an abrasive paste. Prophy-jet polishing, however, uses an air polishing system with a combination of pressurized water and baking soda to remove more stubborn stains.
These monitors are found next to every patient chair. Patients can watch a movie or TV show. Patients can also view their dental radiographs when speaking to the doctor about the findings for a better understanding of their oral health.

Dr. Cabassa and his entire staff are wonderful. I have had three different procedures (gum grafts) completed here and had great experiences each time. Dr. Cabassa and his staff are extremely knowledgeable and go out of their way to ensure that their patients are comfortable; I have even laughed through each and every appointment because it is such a light-hearted and fun office. Overall, a great experience and I highly recommend Dr. Cabassa!

I went to Dr. Cabassa three times. At each appointment I paid what my insurance didn't cover in full. After my last gum surgery I got a call from Joni stating I owe $1,500 my insurance was not covering. Joni and I agreed on a payment plan of $100 a month to be taken out on the third of every month until paid off. Since this agreement they have been doing just that and I now owe $1,100. To my surprise I got a call from Heather today demanding the full $1,100 and threatening to send it to collections. I said this must be a mistake Joni and I worked out a payment plan regarding this months ago. Heather (confrontational & condescending) says this no longer applies due to her accounting office and wants the full payment today. I said how can this be? I understand going forward w new patients this not being an option but how can you go back on the agreement we made months ago? Heather then goes on to say I don't even see any agreement in your records about any payment plan. I said then how have you been taking $100 dollars out of my account every month?! I said can I please speak to Joni? Heather said she was not in the office and would no longer be involved in this matter. The call then ended by Heather saying I'll be receiving a letter from them and be sent to collections if they don't receive the full $1,100. Twenty minutes later Heather calls back (in a completely different tone) saying they will honor my original payment plan and should she use my credit card on file? I said you just told me you had nothing in my records about any payment plan yet now they're there? She goes on to say sorry she was looking in the wrong place?! I said I find that pretty hard to believe but yes continue w that credit card like you have been. I canceled my surgery next month. I will no longer be a patient of Dr. Cabassa due to the terrible treatment of his office staff. Very sad because Dr. Cabassa and his assistant were great.

Dr. Cabassa is the most skilled Professional Periodontist. His office is equipped with the latest technology and is very clean and set up very tastefully. His skill set is impressive and explanations of proposed treatment are upfront with realistic expectations. The 3 D scan machine showed images of my jaw and infections that were not visible on regular radiographs, and were areas of concerns that were addressed as a priority. I must say whatever he proposed for treatment, is what he delivered and made sure it was done in the most comfortable manner. The financial fee portions payable to the office were again upfront with no surprise charges and everything was explained prior to starting the treatment. I must say I have been very happy with my experience with Dr. Cabassa as my gum specialist.

Dr.Cabassa is an amazing periodontist! His assistant Jessica, and Joni at the front desk are so polite, nice, and helpful! I got referred to Dr.Cabassa about six months ago for gum recontouring to help make my smile (tooth to gum ratio) nicer! Dr. Cabassa and Jessica went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and excited about the procedure. They both explained the process and my after care in depth to make sure I healed properly! Joni even called the next day just to ask how I was feeling! I would recommend Dr.Cabassa to everyone he is amazing! He has great bed side manner and makes you enjoy going to the periodontist!
