Originally a chapel dating back to the 1800s, the building was purchased in 1970 by grassroots organizers in the neighborhood who wanted to address the needs of the West Bank students and residents. The result was Cedar Riverside Peoples Center, one of Minnesotas first free medical clinics.
Peoples Center then acquired Family Dental Care (now People's Center Dental Clinic) to increase access to direct dental care and oral hygiene education for clients receiving Medicaid. We were the first FQHC in the nation to hire a dental therapist to increase patient access to dental care and reduce medical costs, and the first community clinic in Minnesota to invest in a bridge or interface between our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Electronic Dental Record (EDR).
In 2003, We rebranded to Peoples Center Clinics and Services, and became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Since becoming an FQHC,the number of patients served annually by Peoples Center increased from 2,000-9,000 demonstrating the burgeoning need for accessible and affordable health care in our service area. We also added behavioral health services and expanded our supportive services.
Now we are a nationally recognized non-profit community health center serving vibrant communities in south Minneapolis and the surrounding areas. Our two clinics, located in the Cedar-Riverside and Longfellow neighborhoods, are dedicated to delivering affordable health care, inspiring hope and promoting community wellness.
At our Cedar Riverside Clinic, we offer the full continuum of primary care from pediatric to geriatric care. Preventative care and education, acute care, chronic disease management, reproductive health, including pre- and postnatal care for women, and STI/HIV testing for all ages are all offered at affordable prices with flexible payment plans.
We offer a low-cost pharmaceutical program, laboratory and X-ray services, as well as a referral service for those patients who need to be seen by a specialist, and our care coordinators help patients get the care they need across medical, behavioral, dental, specialty and pharmaceutical services.
At our Longfellow Dental Clinic, we offer preventative care, examinations, x-rays and hygiene services along with tooth extractions, root canals, fillings, bridges, crowns and dental sealants to patients of all ages.
The physicians are all nice and caring they look like they want to be here. Everyone else is so friendly and accommodating. Best of all, there are women here who speak my language. I always tell people about this place.
Our house was destroyed in the Minneapolis tornado in 2011. Peoples Center helped find us temporary housing and eventually assisted in getting us to our permanent apartment, where we have been for two years. Theyve been in our corner the entire time.
They called multiple different insurance companies to find out if I was eligible for coverage. They call me at home to explain my medications to me. I had a hard time with delivery and experienced some complications, so my midwife and my care coordinator got me access to in-home physical therapy. Someone even helped me shop for my children. I cannot count how many things they have helped me with.
Peoples Center is a certified Health Care Home. This means we have onsite medical, dental, behavioral, support, and legal teams to provide holistic care to each individual patient. These teams prioritize inter-departmental communication for every single patients needs, and place cooperation and at the core of our practice. Using this care model, we can treat each and every person in their entirety and make informed referrals to our incredible host of community partners . They overcharged me, misled me about whether I could be refunded, and eventually refunded me a month or so later. That would be fine if it was the only problem, but... I have an impression that they tend towards overtreatment. To quote The Atlantic on overtreatment: "Favored procedures, many of which are elaborate and steeply priced, include root canals, the application of crowns and veneers, teeth whitening and filing, deep cleaning, gum grafts, fillings for "microcavities"--incipient lesions that do not require immediate treatment--and superfluous restorations and replacements, such as swapping old metal fillings for modern resin ones. " I encourage anyone considering them to seek a second opinion if possible. I personally don't intend to return, because they were not affordable, their recommendations contradicted the recommendations of the last other dentist I saw, and I don't trust them.

The staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Scheduling my COVID vaccine appointments was easy and I received the shots at my scheduled times without any delay. Very nice people working here!

I cracked a tooth I called in to get an appointment I told the lady on the phone what happened and that I needed a filling and she said "no problem let's get you in for an appointment." So I scheduled the appointment I go in thinking I'm gonna get my filling taken care of because the lady on the phone told me no problem they do an x-ray and they say Yep your tooth is cracked but we can't do a filling. You have to wait until we can have time to get you in here and make another appointment. I am supposed to just loose out on another day of pay because the lady told me the wrong thing on the phone. I am telling them I can't take to many days off because it's a new job and in times of Covid finding a job isn't easy. The attitude from the lady was basically acting like she could care less. If the lady on the phone would have told that I have to make two separate appointments to get a simple filling I would have went somewhere else that can do it all in one day. I think they are just trying to find ways to be able to charge you more then once by making two appointments. Don't tell someone you can do something when you know you can't. Waste of time and money! Craziest thing I had to point out the crack to the dentist. When she asked can you point out where it's cracked my first thought was aren't you the dentist. I mean where did you get your degree that you have to have the patient show you where the tooth is broken.

This dental clinic plays games with there patients. I would never recommend this clinic to anyone who wants good dental care, you will not receive here. It's the worst place ever do not go there unless you want a mouth full of cavities. Run don't walk away run!
