Orthodontics is a fantastic and fun profession! I am most passionate about helping people improve their smiles and their self-confidence. It is very rewarding to assist people in achieving a healthy, functioning bite, and I count it a privilege to be entrusted with my patents care. I decided that I wanted to be an orthodontist when I was only 14 years old. There is truly nothing else I can imagine myself doing. Dr. Paul S. Burkey has been an orthodontic specialist in Vernon Hills, IL since 1985. He graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School as co-valedictorian and attended Loyola University Chicago, where he received a Bachelor of Science in biology, graduating magna cum laude. He is a graduate of Loyola University School of Dentistry, finishing as valedictorian in 1983. Dr. Burkey pursued specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Iowa, completing a Master of Science degree with thesis and earning a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics. Upon completion of his orthodontic specialty training and residency, Dr. Burkey began to practice in Vernon Hills in 1985. In 1994, he relocated to his current office, also in Vernon Hills.
Dr. Burkey and his staff believe their patients deserve care and treatment that is personalized but also advanced and current, taking advantage of the latest in techniques and technology in order to complete treatment in the most comfortable and efficient way that minimizes treatment time. Dr. Burkey stays very current with orthodontic advancements and trends by attending numerous continuing education courses every year, including orthodontic society meetings, SureSmile regional and national conferences, as well as three different local dental study clubs that meet every month. He also subscribes to numerous professional orthodontic journals.
As a specialist in orthodontics, Dr. Burkey enjoys treating children as well as adults. Dr. Burkey is in solo practice and maintains only one office. Therefore, you can be certain of the same personalized, consistent care and attention to detail, since you will always see the same orthodontist for each visit. He offers a wide range of treatment, including interceptive orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics to help influence skeletal growth of the jaws. He utilizes SureSmiletechnology and uses GACs In-Ovation-R self-ligating brackets, the most advanced in bracket design, for faster and more comfortable tooth movement. He also offers clear ceramic braces, lingual invisible (behind the teeth) braces, and Invisalign therapy.
In addition to these affiliations, Dr. Burkey is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Only a small minority of orthodontists have completed the rigorous, optional certification and examination process to become board certified. This involves a written examination as well as an oral examination and a detailed workup and presentation of complex, completed cases.
Dr. Burkey has given lectures and presentations to the Great Lakes Dental Society, North Suburban Branch of the Chicago Dental Society, Lake County Dental Hygienists Society, and to various study clubs on topics such as Orthodontic Advancements for Periodontal Health, Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery, SureSmile Robotic Technology Applied to Orthodontics, Clinical Photography, and other topics. Dr. Burkey has also published professional articles in both the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and The Angle Orthodontist, and he co-authored a chapter in Textbook of Orthodontics, published in 2001. Dr. Burkey currently serves as the President of the UIC Dental Alumni Board of Directors and serves on the Boards Nominations and Sponsorship Committees.
Dr. Burkey grew up in Zion, IL and has lived in Libertyville for the past 32 years. He has been married to his wonderful wife Alisa for 33 years, and they have three grown sons: Luke, Seth, and Daniel. The smallest member of their family is a Boston Terrier named Holley, adopted from a local shelter.
Spending time with his wife, sons, and daughter-in-law Caroline is a priority for Dr. Burkey when he is not at the office. As a family, they especially like doing things outdoors, such as swimming, kayaking, golf, and water skiing. Dr. Burkey and his sons also love to scuba dive. In the winter, the entire family enjoys downhill skiing. Dr. Burkey is an active member of Christ Church Crossroads in Grayslake.
Carrie is a scheduling coordinator and looks forward to greeting you when you visit the office. She loves sharing her days with husband Chris, three kids and one cuddly little dog. Carrie likes to travel and experience new places. She enjoys outside activities with her family and helping with the toddlers and preschoolers at her church. Carrie is eager to get to know the patients and families and hopes that they feel welcomed and cared for when visiting our office.
Connie has lived in the area for over 25 years. She enjoys welcoming familiar and new people to the office at the front desk. She adores spending time outdoors such as walking or running with her husband and 2 dogs. In addition, Connie has 3 children, so you might see her watching a local high school activity or judging a USA gymnastics meet in the Chicago area.
Nicole has been in the Orthodontic field for 4 years now. She is excited about the dental field, because she has always enjoyed working with people and their children! She takes her job very seriously and loves the people she works with. Nicole has four children of her own, and when she is not working, she likes to spend time with them fishing, camping, and snowboarding in the winter. Nicole also enjoys dancing, working out, traveling, and personal training.
Melissa has been in the Orthodontic field since 2003. In 2011 her Husbands job as a United States Marine brought them to the sunny state of California. She is now back and has continued her position here as an Orthodontic assistant. She has a Beautiful daughter, named Hannah, who is 16 and a sweet little boy, Liam, who is 2. Her family is her first priority, but when she's at work it's her patients she loves to care for. She has a strong passion for orthodontics and when she is with your child they are in excellent care.

What I experienced this morning was negligence defined. Three weeks ago I scheduled a 9:30 am appointment for a first initial consultation. I arrived promptly 5 minutes prior to my appointment. I was seated in the waiting room for the next 30 minutes watching new patients walk in, be seated, and helped prior still to myself. After that 30 minutes, I approach the counter to inquire the status to my appointment. They clerk looking flustered and shocked seemingly NOW remembers that I am there to been seen and have been for 30 minutes. They run to the back and take another 5 minutes. At this point I have decided to leave. Since I don't appear to be of any value or importance to their office. It is Very clear that a bias is held towards those with children, or a seemingly wealthy appearance and they will treat you differently based on this factor. Now after waiting 3 weeks for the appointment, and arriving on time on my day off bright and early. I am now back where I started and needing to find an orthodontist. If you take quality service seriously, I would consider spending your hard earned money elsewhere. Somewhere where your time is treated with respect. Extremely disappointed, and unfortunately this is the First ever experience with an orthodontist office. Off putting is an understatement. If they don't care about you during your First ever visit, rest assured, they DO not care about your business as a whole. They got comfortable, complacent and negligent knowing they are in a wealthy area. Surprise, the fundamentals of excellent service matter even more when there's hundreds of alternatives. Wake up. Working individuals, this is not the office for you. Go where they respect you.

Two of my three children have completed their orthodontic work (braces) with Dr. Burkey and I couldn't be happier with the results. My third will get his braces off soon and I can't wait to see his perfect smile. Dr. Burkey is reliable and meticulous. He won't settle until his patients' smiles are as perfect as can be. I would never thought in my life that I will have great teeth until today when Nicole removed my braces at Dr Burkey he is amazing and Melissa is kind and the whole team members are awesome. I have checked so many orthodentists whom I was not pleased with their consultations and their prices .Dr Burkey worked carefully and professionally on my teeth cuz I had difficult case he is excellent.

I don't even know where to start! I have so many good things to say about my awesome experience with Dr. Burkey & the all the wonderful ladies on his team. The girls were always so friendly. From my first consultation I knew I didn't need to look else where. My dentist (Dr.Hernandez) gave me the referral to Dr. Burkey. My treatment lasted 19 months. I thought it would be longer. They're so flexible when it comes to both payment & scheduling appointments. Many thanks Dr. Burkey & staff for making my dream a reality!

I'm so thankful to Dr. Burkey and his amazing team for treating and fixing my daughters very serious orthodontic problems. My daughter was under Dr. Burkeys evaluation for 2 years and when her adult teeth all came out she started year and half treatment which has just ended this month. It has been a long journey. Update: Today I completed my course of SureSmile clear aligners with Dr. Burkey. Everything went smoothly and the results are spectacular! I have a friend who started clear aligner treatment at the same time, and her teeth stopped tracking the aligners toward the end, so I know things can go wrong -- and Dr. Burkey works extra carefully to make sure they don't. We had two children under Dr. Burkey's impeccable care. Our reasons for recommending Dr. Burkey are many. The facility is well cared for and well designed. The staff is uniformly warm and welcoming. Our son's treatment had excellent results, and our daughter is progressing very well. Though they don't look forward to them (understandably), neither of our kids has any reservations about keeping appointments. In fact, they hurry us along to make sure that they get their wooden nickels for being on time (a brilliant piece of motivational psychology). We really appreciated that Dr. Burkey was the only one of the four Orthodontists that we evaluated who recommended different treatments for each of our children; the others all seemed to have a one-size-fits-all "everyone needs braces" approach that didn't sit well with us. After we signed up, the Financial Coordinator worked with us to make each payment in a different calendar year so that we could maximize our insurance benefits. When friends visiting from out of town had a broken wire, the Appointment Coordinators scheduled an appointment the same day and Dr. Burkey treated them with the same care and consideration that he gives to his long-time patients. Our friends came away saying that they wished they could continue with Dr. Burkey (if only they didn't live in Colorado). We are grateful to our friends who recommended Dr. Burkey to us and we pay it forward by recommending his practice to others every chance we get.

We are extremely pleased with Dr. Burkey and his staff. Our son just completed his second set of braces and has a beautiful smile! I sought 3 different opinions prior to starting with Dr. Burkey several years ago as I was not pleased to have put our son through braces twice. Dr. Burkey took lots of time with us and thoroughly explained what was necessary and why. The whole experience went very smooth and well. We recommend him and his kind staff highly!

I cannot say enough about how great Dr. Burkey and his staff are. I am thoroughly impressed by all aspects of his office and business. The front desk is extremely organized, pleasant, and timely with updates and accommodating schedules. The support staff are very knowledgeable and effective in their treatment supporting Dr. Burkey. And Dr. Burkey himself is a fantastic clinician. I came in with a complicated case and Dr. Burkey clearly explained all my major considerations and choices I had. Throughout my treatment he answered questions and provided timely status on my progress. His bedside manner is second to none. I highly recommend his office for anyone considering orthodontics for themselves or their family.
