Advances in dental technology have made oral surgery simpler, and more comfortable. As we incorporate these technologies, surgical procedures become more effective while being less invasive. At Pashapour Oral + Facial Surgery, some of our most frequently used technologies are dental x-rays, cone beam CT scans, intraoral camera, and cancer screenings & biopsies.

A dental x-ray, which may be referred to as a dental radiograph, uses low levels of controlled radiation in order to form a detailed picture of your jaw. Dental x-rays are a very useful tool for diagnosing various dental conditions. A dental x-ray may be ordered prior to a surgical procedure in order to better understand the specific details of your case. Dental x-rays also provide an image to compare the results of your oral surgery. Dental x-rays are used in diagnosing dental conditions that are not easily detected by the naked eye.

A cone beam CT scan uses imaging technology to produce 3-dimensional images of the jaw. A cone beam CT scan allows for a more precise and accurate diagnosis for a variety of oral conditions and can provide additional information about the soft tissues, nerves, and jawbone. During a cone beam CT scan, the patient sits comfortably while the device circles around the patients head, capturing detailed images of the mouth. Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team will be able to determine if you require a jawbone graft or sinus lift depending on the results of your cone beam CT scan. A cone beam CT scan provides a more detailed view of the jaw and is often used for diagnosing conditions that require further analysis than a dental x-ray.

An intraoral camera is a revolutionary diagnostic tool that gives a closer view of the internal structures of the mouth. An intraoral camera allows for multiple viewing angles of the mouth that are not achievable without this technology. We have increased maneuverability with an intraoral camera, allowing us to precisely view specific portions of the mouth. The view captured from an intraoral camera will be displayed on a monitor, allowing a live view of the internal structures of the mouth. We can show our patients first-hand the views that are gained through this intraoral camera.

Oral cancer screenings are an important tool for oral health that can detect the beginning signs of an oral tumor or cancer. The early detection of oral cancer can allow for a more successful treatment regimen to be created in a timely manner. If Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team find a suspicious growth, lesion, or bump in the mouth, they can take a biopsy of this anomaly and send it out for testing. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, these growths are benign and can be treated quickly.

A board certified oral surgeon in DC and Virginia, Dr. Ali Pashapour was born in Iran and grew up in France. After finishing the French Brevet and Baccalaureate in Normandy, France, he attended Georgetown University, where he graduated with a dual Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and biochemistry. He then received an Ivy League education at The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.

Following dental school, Dr. Pashapour continued his surgical training and education in oral surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for 2 years. He then completed general surgery and anesthesia rotations at Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx, New York. He trained at Drexel University College of Medicine, where he completed plastic surgery, trauma, ear, nose, & throat (ENT), and surgical intensive care unit rotations. Dr. Pashapour also received his oral and maxillofacial surgery certificate. These experiences have given Dr. Pashapour a wealth of surgical expertise and knowledge that makes him stand out amongst his peers.

Serving Washington DC and Arlington, VA, Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Leonel Perez is a native of Texas and received his bachelors degree from the University of Texas of San Antonio. He then went on to pursue his degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in 2008. Dr. Perez continued his training at UTHSCSA and earned his Medical Degree in 2011. During this time, he completed his one-year General Surgery internship and subsequently completed his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery training in 2014 under the notable names of Dr. Edward Ellis III and Dr. Daniel Perez.

Dr. Perez is currently active duty in the Navy at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD. He is a Diplomate and Committee Examiner for the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. The symptoms of oral cancer vary from patient to patient, but it is important to understand some of the earliest symptoms of oral cancer in order to know when to seek medical attention. Some of the most common symptoms of oral cancer include sores, lumps, red or white lesions, a sensation of a lump stuck in your throat, numbness of the mouth, oral pain, and trouble moving your jaw or tongue. Additional symptoms include the loss of teeth with no apparent cause, chronic sore throat or hoarseness, pain in the ears, and oral swelling. A biopsy is a sample of tissue removed from the body and examined in a laboratory in order to determine if there are any signs of disease. If you are suffering from an oral growth, a biopsy may be taken and sent to a lab for additional testing. The results of this test will allow Dr. Pashapour and his surgical team to understand if the growth is malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous). Following the results of an oral biopsy, we will be able to better understand the specific details of your case and create an effective treatment.
