Jeffrey Pan - dental student speaker for @UConnHealth commencement ceremony May 9. Graduating dental student Jeffrey Pan is one of the students speaking during the 2016 UConn Health Commencement ceremony.

His father is a well-known family dentist in Melrose, Mass., and his mother is a professor at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine. And he wont be the last. He has a younger brother whos a first-year student at BU Dental, and a younger sister who is considering dentistry.

I always joke with everyone that I got brainwashed when I was a kid, Pan says. I always wanted to be a dentist at a young age. We actually did live upstairs from the practice, and I would always come home from school and then go down and peak through the door and watch my father.

I didnt really know much about the program,Pan says. At the interview, I got a really good feeling about the program. Then I heard a lot of great things from people who were in dental school, or who had graduated and had heard about the program. It seemed like a very competitive program to get into, and it looked like it had everything that I was looking for in terms of an education and clinic experience.

One of the things hell remember most about the UConn School of Dental Medicine is the class size. Pan is one of 35 students who make up the Class of 2016. Because they got to know each other so well, he says they will have a network of people they can call on for questions and rely on as they enter the profession.

The latter two years of clinic especially, I think it really solidified our knowledge from medical school to dental school, being able to integrate that knowledge and apply that to patients,Pan says. I think the workload they give us and the pressure they put on us, after a while it starts to inspire confidence.

Pan says hes always wanted to be like his father, and always wanted to work with his father. And thats the plan: a year in BUs general dental residency, and then back to the two-story building he grew up in, with Dr. Nelson Pans practice on the ground floor. Only this time, father and son will practice side by side.

On May 9th UConn Health celebrated its 45th Commencement for 150 members in attendance of its Class of 2016 at UConns Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts in Storrs. In total UConn Health graduated 192 students.

UConns Graduate School also issued 27 Ph.D. degrees (including 2 dual M.D./Ph.D. degrees) and 53 master degrees (including 3 dual M.D./M.P.H. degrees) for Master of Public Health, Master of Dental Science, Master of Science in Biomedical Science or Clinical and Translational Research, and Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Science or in Public Health.

In her welcoming remarks UConn President Susan Herbst applauded the graduates choosing to enter the vital field of healthcare saying, Wherever your path takes you, you will always represent the University of Connecticut.

Herbst bestowed an honorary degree of Doctorate of Humane Letters upon Commencement Speaker Charles Osgood, a 45-year veteran newsman, a two-decade CBS Sunday Morning anchor, and radio commentator of The Osgood File. This honor adds to his countless accolades for journalism excellence ranging from Emmys to Peabodys to national hall of fame inductions for broadcast, radio and cable.

His clever words of wisdom also included: I admit that I cannot tell you who will be elected President of the United States in November, or how all of this mess will be sorted out. In any event, this much I do know. Unlike many other graduates of this season, who are told its a dark cold world out there for college graduates these days, some of them are taking gap tours of the world because the jobs are so scarce. Its different for you. You are wanted. The world needs you, the world needs you now!

Osgood added: There has been some wisdom displayed in the choices that you have already made about where to study and how to make a positive difference in peoples lives. That is what health and healthcare and all other aspects of that field is all about. Your timing is perfect. Medicine stands on the threshold of great advances and you will be a part of that.

He also urged the graduates to be life-long learners from both their classmates and future colleagues similarly to his career experience at CBS News. At CBS I have been learning from my colleagues for 40 years now. They turned out to be some of the best people in the business. I urge you to look around and do the same thing.

During CommencementDr. Marc Lalande, professor and chair of the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at UConn Health was awarded the Board of Directors Faculty Recognition Award for his outstanding contributions to research, teaching and mentoring.

I would like to thank the faculty for a first-class education, said Daniel Ray, who graduated with master degrees in public administration and public health. I am confident we will bridge the gaps in our healthcare system.

Jeffrey Pan a graduate of UConn School of Dental Medicine said, I am now directing myself toward changing the world one patient at a time, and later revealed a selfie camera-stick from underneath his graduation gown to capture the important graduation milestone for him and the audience of his fellow cap and gowned classmates. I am going to miss this place.

We are responsible for inspiring the next generation, said Alex Hennessy, a graduating medical student who will be staying at UConn School of Medicine to complete his residency training in surgery in the field of urology. Take care of yourselves. Be good to your body and mind, you are your most important patient. I wish you all the best and congratulations on an amazing accomplishment.

Sanford Cloud, chair of UConn Healths Board of Directors shared his congratulatory remarks with the graduates: Be in pursuit of excellence in everything you do. Keep family at the center of your universe. Serve your community of citizens.

I have slight dentist phobia and was told I needed to have a small hole in my tooth filled. To say I was a bit nervous is likely an understatement but from Lori who works in the office to Dr. Pan (youngest son I believe) my experience was easy and pain free. They are super kind and patient (with even the phobic folks like myself) and walk you through the treatment as well as work to make you as comfortable as possible. Thank you!!

This is a great family run dental clinic. The staff are friendly, polite and do a satisfying job. Dr. Nelson Pan is easy to get along with and he personally reviewed my x-rays and reports. They make you feel valued and respected. I would recommend you to visit this place, if you're tired of the other business centric dental chains around.

Jeffrey was a very pleasant doctor to work with! I had a tough situation that another doctor could not figure out and Jeffrey and the team at Pan Dental Care got me in the next day and figured out the problem in the first 5 minutes. My whole experience overall was a great one. If you are looking for a dentist in the Melrose area I would 100% reccomend Pan Dental Care to anyone.

I am not fond of going to the Dentist. Past experiences were not always the best. However, I had a procedure performed by Dr. Jason Pan today and it went wonderfully! A lot of my fears have been laid to rest. He was very nice, kind and thoughtful about my anxiety. I actually made another appointment on my way out the door. I know the next visit will be even better. By the way, I literally felt no pain at all. Betty
