Dr. Houston joined the practice in 2002 after many years in academics. Dr. Houston went to Georgia Southern University and then completed his undergraduate dental education at the Medical College of Georgia. Upon graduating in 1994 with a DMD degree, Dr. Houston continued his formal education by completing two residencies and a fellowship over the next six years.
The first residency was a two-year general practice, hospital dentistry residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA. This program was a hospital-based program sponsored by the LSU School of Dentistry. Here, Dr. Houston learned how to provide dental care for medically compromised patients. Treatment included OR visits for the adult mentally handicapped. The second residency was a three-year prosthodontics residency. Prosthodontics is the art and science of fabricating artificial teeth. The field of prosthodontics includes cosmetic dentistry, crowns, bridges, partials, dentures and implants. This program was also hospital-based and took place at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. The University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry provided academic support. The fellowship was in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Oncology. This program took place at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. This program trains specialists in the field of prosthodontics in providing care for the unique needs of cancer patients.
Since leaving academics, thus ending his career as a professional student, Dr. Houston has focused on providing specialty care in a general dentistry setting in the Upstate of South Carolina. His many areas of interest include implant dentistry, complete dentures, partial dentures and cosmetic dentistry. For patients with complex needs, many of these areas of dentistry can and should be combined to produce optimum results. On a personal note, one of his private ambitions is to absolutely change the misguided assumption that artificial teeth, whether dentures, partials, crowns or bridges must look 'false!

I can't say enough about Dr. Houston and the fine staff at Palmetto Smiles in Lyman. He was not our primary pediatric dentist but our regular doctor was unable to fit us in his crowded schedule. Our son had a serious dental issue and they squeezed him in super early in the morning to try to get his problem remedied. After some initial tests and short observation period Dr. Houston concluded that a specialist would be better suited to take care of our son. He made a call to a colleague and set up yet another "emergency" appointment for us on the spot. After apologizing profusely for not being able to help he promptly refunded what we had paid him for the visit and sent us on our way. As we left he requested that I reach out to him after our appointment with his counterpart and let him know how our son was doing. You just don't see that kind of care and integrity in the medical business much these days. The specialist he sent us to took great care of our son and was finally able to bring him some relief for a terrible abscess he'd been dealing with for days. Kudos to these fine gentlemen and their caring staffs. I am a fan for life!

I've been going here for years, even after my family moved further away. I had a LOT of work done after going years without seeing a dentist. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. They worked with me to maximize what insurance would cover. My son is never nervous about going to the dentist because of the great staff.

Very professional and friendly. I knew my teeth was in trouble because every time I eat something it was giving me problems so I called for appointment got me in within a week. So I went in on a Thursday an thay cleaned an pulled 4 teeth the next Fallen Tuesday I had 5 teeth filled. Reason I hadn't been to the dentist's office in a long time it' because I'm always afraid of the shots an Drilling . but I never did fill it.

Dr. Houston's dental and office staff are thorough and they make me and my kids feel like we are the most important patients in their practice. I have many friends, who are also patients, that they think they are the most important patients in their practice too. We are made to feel welcome from the moment we walk in the door until the "see you next times" upon our exit. Dr. Houston is GREAT with my kids too. I highly recommend them.

I went here to have my teeth cleaned. I had not had my teeth cleaned in about a year. They put me through TORTURE. About 2 hours cleaning with a small metal thing. Then they told me i HAD to have braces. Said if i did not i would be in pain later. Its 3 1/2 years later my teeth straightened up fine. My new denstist does not torture me like he did.
