The mission of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is to assure the public of safe and optimal care through the development and maintenance of high standards of certification and re-certification of Diplomates in the speciality. Though there are a number of certifying boards, only the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is recognized and approved by the Council on Dental Education and Licensure of the American Dental Association for the speciality. Not all oral surgeons are board certified and only those individuals who demonstrate achievement of the requisite training, experience and knowledge are granted board certification, indicated with the title Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. James O. Jacobs and Dr. D. John Webb are board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons. They have attained the level of Diplomate with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, manifesting a commitment to excellence as well as dedication to lifelong learning.
The history of our oral and maxillofacial surgery practice began in Ventura County whenDr. Arthur Barrett and Dr. Ross Prout opened the original office in the mid 1960s.Dr. Robert Pittman later joined as an associate in 1974.Dr. Barrett, Dr. Prout and Dr. Pittman opened their second office in Westlake in 1974. Dr. Barrett and Dr. Pittman opened new offices together in Warner Victory, Thousand Oaks & Simi Valley in 1975. Dr. Jim McLeod joined the practice in 1980 as an associate and then bought out Dr. Barrett a year later when he retired. Dr. Pittman practiced with Dr. McLeod for 5 years. Dr. Pittman retired on disability and was replaced by his classmate, Dr. John Webb in 1986. Dr. James Jacobs started the Ventura office in 2012 and later merged with the Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley offices when Dr. McLeod retired in 2015.
Dr. Jacobs is a board certified surgeon and a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and maintains staff privileges at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. He is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, California Dental Association and the Santa Barbara, Ventura County Dental Society.
Dr. Jacobs completed his specialty and residency training at The Ohio State University. During these four years of specialty training, Dr. Jacobs gained experience with dental surgery, general anesthesia, dental implants, facial trauma and reconstructive surgery (orthognathic surgery upper and lower jaw surgery). In addition to obtaining his certificate of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Jacobs received a Masters of Science in oral biology. His masters thesis explored strength characteristics of small-diameter dental implants. This surgical training also included a 2-month rotation at the St. James Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.
Prior to residency Dr. Jacobs completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University. After completing college he returned to his home state of Washington and graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry. While in dental school he conducted research regarding how dental implants benefit people who are not satisfied with conventional dentures. Dr. Jacobs was awarded the Psi Omega Scholarship, Hospital Dentistry award and the Dental Implant Student award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for excellence related to dental implant surgery.
Dr. Carlson completed his specialty and residency training at The University of California San Francisco. Within this training program he worked extensively at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, the UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital, and the UCSF Moffitt Hospital and Medical Center. During these six years of specialty training, Dr. Carlson gained broad scope experience within the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery while maintaining a special interest focused on dental surgery, general anesthesia, and dental implants. In addition to obtaining his certificate of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Carlson received a Medical Doctorate from The University of California San Francisco Medical School.
Prior to residency Dr. Carlson completed his undergraduate studies at The University of California Santa Barbara. After completing college he worked as a medical volunteer at the Sera Mey Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Karnataka, India. While working with Tibetan refugees in rural India he had the privilege of being exposed to and confronting unique oral health challenges in an international setting. Upon returning to the USA, Dr. Carlson then attended and graduated from The University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry.
After receiving a Bachelors degree in Biology from Occidental College, he attended UCLA School of Dentistry where he earned his dental degree. Following a year of general dental practice, he completed a Residency in Oral Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Dr. Webb served as a Registrar in North Wales, U.K.. Oral Surgery Unit before returning to continue his career in California. He was director of the Oral Surgery Residency Program at Harbor- UCLA Medical Center before joining Dr. McLeod as a partner in 1986.

I had the best experience I could imagine. I went in for my appointment to have an extraction. After he saw the look of severe anxiety on my face he explained I had other options. We decided to reschedule my appointment so I could go under general anesthesia. The surgery was quick and painless. I'm so grateful Dr. Jacobs was so kind and caring. The entire team is just fantastic. I highly recommend them.

Oral surgery is about as easy as it gets with Dr. Jacobs. I've had work done by him twice. He's very experienced and takes care of business - you are out of there and on your way before you know it. He's also a very nice man, as are the staff who are totally supportive and kind. You couldn't pick a better place to have your work done.

I recently had Tori removal from upper and lower mouth (5 areas total) , a very big surgery; as I had it done all at once. Dr. Jacobs and his team were amazing from pre-op to post-op and treated me like family. I wish they did general dentistry because I would switch in a heart heat. Marcy at the front desk gave honest and personal attention responding to e-mails and text message during my recovery. She gave me piece of mind! I can't thank you all enough!!!

I needed to get a back molar extracted and worried it would be difficult as my regular dentist did not want to do it. I was referred to Pacific Oral Surgery. The entire experience was so positive. The whole staff was extremely nice and I can't believe how smooth the procedure went - I mean I was really shocked. I highly recommend them.

So, I've been procrastinating for quite some time in getting surgery done and over with, but for some reason I had my doubts. After doing research on severity of surgery procedure that I was going to embarked on. I really made sure to find the right Maxillofacial surgery doctor. I did my homework and felt at ease to have found Dr. Jacobs in Ventura County. I decided to schedule an appointment and there I go. Days later I arrive at Dr. Jacobs office somewhat nervous, but after meeting Dr. Jacobs in person... I knew I was in good hands. Fast forward one year and a half later after dealing with so much pain I decided in moving forward with my surgery. I made my appointment but I had forgotten I was not to eat or drink any fluids day of and I was unblemished to precede with my surgery. So, I rescheduled. This time I was ready! All I remember was seeing Dr. Jacobs assistants, a small mask hovering above my face, then Dr. Jacobs walking into the operating room having a seat and letting me know I was about to feel a small pinch in my left arm and out I was until I was woken and hear everything went well. I really would like to thank everyone who was involved and most important making me feel very comfortable. Dr. Jacobs you really rock!! Much Love and Thank You again. Pacific Oral Surgery is the place to go.

I have always been the person who put off getting their wisdom teeth out for as long as possible but when I finally had to get them out I was referred to pacific oral. Post removal: I am so happy I got them removed with Pacific Oral Surgery. Dr Jacobs has such Amazing office Staff that really care for you. Soku was incredibly helpful and kind she took great care of me the whole pre and post surgery process making sure I understood what was going on the whole time. Monica, the receptionist was incredibly helpful with scheduling and just being a smiley face in the front! Dr. Jacobs made the whole process incredibly smooth and as pain free as it could be. Wow! One word kept coming to mind as I received treatment, "Wow". I thought they just rolled out the red carpet for me, but in reading other reviews, it appears that everyone receives the same royal treatment.... Wow! From beginning to end, the treatment is 5 stars (I'd give a higher rating if possible). Not only did I receive clear and thorough explanations to my thousand questions before and after my operation, but I was spoon-fed apple sauce afterwards as my mouth was numb to ensure I didnt take medication on an empty stomach. Everyone in the office took great care of me. (They even called the following day to check on me, "Who does that?"). All I can say is "Wow"!

The dentist is not my favorite place to visit and when my dentist referred me to Pacific Oral Surgery I broke out into the cold sweats. Boy was I wrong. They are very professional and know what their business is. Customer satisfaction. They are friendly knowledgeable and to he point. My appointment was at 9am and I was out before10am. They pulled a tooth and installer a implant in less than an hour. I felt no discomfort or pain what so ever. I have another appointment in Jan. and actually looking forward to it. I highly recommend them.

I got 4 wisdom teeth extracted today and my experience was amazing! I heard so many horror stories of wisdom teeth extractions gone wrong but they put my mind at ease with answering every question and concern (they even did it with enthusiasm and for some reason that is hard to come by in the 21st century) and they were all just so sweet, helpful, happy, knowledgable people and made me comfortable. I don't remember getting knocked out by the IV and honestly, it felt like I took a 5 minute nap and I don't remember how I got home but they sent me home with everything I needed, all the information I was to use for my healing and they even gave me a cute little gift bag! What awesome dental office would do that?! THIS ONE! This place is incredible, and I am happy I came here for them to extract my wisdom teeth and they made everything less scary! It actually wasn't even scary, that's how on point these people are. Don't waste your money anywhere else! This place is poppin

Extremely compassionate office staff, Dr Carlson was amazing! My daughter was hardly swollen after surgery, and pain was very manageable for having 4 wisdom teeth removed. Absolutely the best experience especially considering we were dreading this for a year! Highly recommend Dr. Carlson.
