Dr. Matthew Kriewaldt is a board-certified orthodontist through the American Board of Orthodontics. The American Board of Orthodontics is the oldest and most prestigious dental specialty board in the world, with only a small percentage of orthodontists having achieved the distinction.

Dr. Matthew grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from Gresham High School in 1994. He then attended the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and was accepted to medical school, law school, and dental school. He followed his heart and made the decision to attended dental school at the Indiana University School of Dentistry and completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Texas Health & Science Center in San Antonio.

Dr. Matthew won numerous awards and honors while in school, including perennial appearances on the Dean's List, the Dean's Silver Award and the Excellence in Oral Diagnosis Award at graduation. Before his orthodontic residency, he completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Camp Pendleton, won the award for Most Talented Clinician, was ranked #1 in his class and became a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. He continued working as a general dentist at Camp Pendleton for two more years and won the Inaugural Commanding Officer's Award for Clinical Excellence.

After his three-year orthodontic residency, Dr. Matthew spent two years working as a full-time orthodontist for the US Navy at Naval Base San Diego, additionally working in private practice for five years. Upon leaving 'America 's Finest City', Dr. Matthew was ranked #1 out of 60 orthodontists in San Diego according to the independent site RateMDs.com.

Dr. Matthew has presented continuing education to dentists and orthodontists as a lecturer and co-director of the annual orthodontic-pedodontic four-day course at the San Diego Naval Base. He is a member of multiple dental and orthodontic organizations including the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontics, and the World Federation of Orthodontists.

Dr. Matthew is an expert in Invisalign, tooth-colored braces, lingual braces (braces on the back of teeth), and regular braces. Although Invisalign accounts for less than 50% of his cases, Dr. Matthew has done more extremely complex cases with Invisalign than any other board-certified orthodontist in Wisconsin.

In his free time, Dr. Matthews latest passion is golfing, conjuring unrealistic dreams of making the senior tour in 2027. He loves classic cars and trucks (his 1951 truck is often parked at the clinic), and he has a 52 high-wheel bike in his office that hes been known to take around the block at the end of the clinic day (complete with a top hat and novelty old-time mustache). For a time, he become way too involved in remote control planes and trucks, as evident by the overflow into the clinics (yes, those planes do fly - as fast as 200mph). He's an advanced open water diver, musician, wake surfer, and artist. All of the original art in Ortho Smiles clinics was created and produced by Dr. Matthew.

Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the proper position.

Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can now choose clear or metal brackets and, in some cases, the color of your appliance. Wires are far less noticeable, and the latest materials are designed to move teeth faster with more comfort. Today, any age is a great age to wear braces!

Treatment time varies and can last between one and three years, depending on several factors including age, treatment method, and how minor or severe your case is. A big factor in a successful treatment is you! The more involved and diligent you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. For children, receiving interceptive or early treatment can also help provide a quicker treatment time.
