Like a lot of people I have not had my teeth cleaned in at least two years: work, pandemic etc... I was nervous. I received a full exam, cleaning with consultation - pain free, timely and enjoyable. The front desk staff is amazing, organized and genuinely friendly. Lindsey, my hygienist is gentle, kind, knowledgeable and informative. Dr. Mead is easy to talk with; patient with my questions and conversation. He went over all my imaging, addressing any concerns. I would go back for a 3 month cleaning if my insurance would cover it! Thank you so much ~ so good to have Orchid Isle Dental on island.

Absolute best dentist on island! I've been to more than a dozen dentists as a child & adult here on the Big Island over the last 35 years and both Dr. Mead & Dr. Nakahara including all staff are skilled, knowledgeable, professional, polite, thorough, and caring towards your oral health. I was having debilitating tooth pain/headache for days and could not find a dentist in Hilo who would see me until months in the future (besides walk in a Bay Clinic, which I've had terrible experiences with because they're the only clinic that takes Quest Insurance). I walked in to inquire about treatment and they squeezed me in that day. I've had no pain or problems with my extractions years ago. Dentists and staff goes above and beyond their call of duty to educate you of your oral health. My gratitude towards Orchid Isle Dental goes beyond the stars! There's no other dentist I would go to or recommend. When you find the best you keep it, no matter the cost or drive time :) Mahalo, Ashley D

I have been there two times now hoping Nakahara would be more receptive than Mead but I am very disappointed with this office. Both dentists were impatient, explained very little and expected me to just go along with a multi thousand dollar plan without any questions to alternatives. They don't care that financially such a price tag is impossible for most people right now. A simple search of "alternatives to root canals" pulls up several dentistry innovations and alternatives to such painful, expensive and intrusive procedures. Do they purposefully try to find the best way to give their patients the biggest price tag? My advice... Be more patient with the people who pay your bills. We hire you and you should kindly and considerately answer our questions and concerns. $2000+ for one tooth is by no means easy for most people. You should listen to the concerns of your patients and offer a financially manageable plan. You should also update your treatment options and not just jump into root canals so quickly when decay isn't even in the root! You are pushing people into expensive corners hastily when their are proven, lesser expensive alternatives in dentistry. Newer biologically supportive treatments available are less costly and less invasive. I felt rushed, and people treated my questions like I was a burden. I should have a role in deciding what work is done in my own mouth and your office offered very little personal rights and decision making in regard to the treatment plan. If you can give away free calendars a few extra minutes to discuss treatment wouldn't kill you would it? I'm appalled at the lack of care and concern for the patient. When you have $0 payment plans and you offer very limited dental treatments that can fail and cost thousands for outdated treatments I would by no means recommend you at all. I'll give you one star for being clean and for 2 out of 3 receptionists being helpful.

I went here for a minor procedure, felt treated like cattle. I was quoted 300 for a 2 month wait and a "diagnosis". Fortunately there is a great dentist across the street. Apparently I did not meet the dentists mentioned here.

My husband went here to get a small white filling at a cost of about $500. Half of which was paid out if his own pocket. Not the dentists fault. However my husband had a sharp point sticking out rubbing against his tongue and went to get it smoothed out. He later got a bill for $56.00 for an evaluation of the tooth. The dentist told him that it was put in exactly the way it was before.How could the dentist possibly know this when the filling had fallen out before he got there and never went to this dentist before. There should be no bill for something was done incorrectly. Just admit that you made it a little too sharp and fix it. A good dentist always checks for how the bite is and make sure everything lines up. I would not recommend this dentist office my sister in law also feels like she is being practiced on and that they dont really know what they are doing.

Dr. Mead and his team helped me with a few thousand dollars worth of dental work. Extremely professional, was never judgemental or rude. He was very direct and clear about my options and the time frame it would take to get it done. They also worked with me on fitting me in 1 last time before I flew back home to Alaska despite being booked out a month. 12/10 would definitely recommend!
