Dr. Drew Shessel was inspired to pursue a career in oral surgery by his father and grandfather, both of whom practiced medicine in Atlanta. Born and raised locally, he always knew he wanted to return home to provide his oral and maxillofacial surgery services. He attended the University of Georgia for his undergraduate career and then completed his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. While there, he received a scholarship for excellence in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Before beginning his residency, he completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery internship at LSU in New Orleans. Then, he moved to Florida to finish his training at Broward Health Medical Center and Nova Southeastern University. While in Florida, he excelled in a full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. His training included the treatment of a wide range of oral and facial conditions as well as the safe administration of all forms of anesthesia.
After training, Dr. Shessel sought a private practice opportunity that would allow him to provide the kind of personalized patient care for which he is known. He and his surgical team strive to offer the highest quality service with a caring touch that always ensures the best interests of his patients. He enjoys being a part of the team at Oral Surgery Specialists of Atlanta, and he finds it incredibly rewarding to be able to offer patients everything they may need to feel better immediately.
Dr. Shessel is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, thus asserting his exemplary knowledge of the OMS specialty. He completed a rigorous written exam, as well as four separate oral examinations to attain this status. As a board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Shessel has demonstrated his comprehensive knowledge of the specialty, his ability to act in critical surgical situations, as well as his skill in completing complex procedures. He has garnered the highest qualification in his specialty which allows him to perform the full scope of all OMS procedures.

I was referred to Dr. Aiken for removal of one of my wisdom teeth that had problems. When we met he looked and told me we should just take all 4 of them I was a bit apprehensive. He assured me it is better to do this once than 4 times. I agreed and so happy I did. I think I was in the chair for a total of 25 minutes and was walking out the door. I couldn't believe when he said I was done. 20 + years of worrying about getting my wisdom teeth removed is now gone after a simple 25 minute procedure. Thank you Dr. Aiken and the rest of the staff! I was well informed by everyone. I really had no swelling and no pain. Remarkable. And, Dr. Aiken called me personally on a Sunday 2 days after the procedure to check how I was doing. Zero problems and everything is normal. Very glad to have been referred to you and your awesome staff! Thank you very much!

I walked in with my mouth swollen and numb!! Wally at check-in was understanding and helped me get seen right away. The clinic overall was great staff A1 and Dr Bankstone was great.

I have had two extractions with Dr. Drew Shessel. He is kind and gentle and talked me through both procedures. The second one was more difficult and he kept me calm with his reassuring talk and NO2. I have had some bad experiences in the past with dental surgeons, but Dr. Shessel has restored my trust in the process. I appreciate the kind and professional staff. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Shessel and Carlos was absolutely amazing throughout my implant process. I was very nervous but their professionalism helped me to remain calm get through the procedure with little to no pain.

Let me just start by saying, I usually don't leave reviews on google no matter my experience. However THIS office definitely deserves a 10 star rating. They truly take the time and dedicate to making you feel most comfortable. I am 21 weeks pregnant and my teeth haven't been the best for a long time. Having a abscess tooth over 5 years untreated & so much decay all over from eating so many sweets and candy over the years and not making regular visits to the dentist really ruined my teeth. I began to be in pain July 5th 2022 from cavities being exposed to the nerve. I have never been in so much pain, so uncomfortable & unable to eat. At this point I'm a emotional wreck because I'm pregnant and I'm STARVING. I had been referred to a oral surgeon and was quoted $1900. There was no way I could afford that I'm such a tight spot I started searching online for other oral surgeons that accepts CareCredit. No one I called had availability to see me asap. Then I found OSSA and from the first time I called the receptionist was so understanding and kind. The Dr told me that I could come in the very next day at 8:30am they took such great care of me. They made sure I was comfortable. I saw Dr.Aiken and he was more than amazing. After my first extraction my other decaying teeth started to bother me like a domino effect. Thankfully Dr.Aiken followed up with me shortly after the first surgery And I was able to voice my concern about another tooth that had started hurting. He did not hesitate to get me on the schedule for the very next day. Now this is the part that really takes this place to the TOP 10. I had one last tooth that began to abscess 2 days ago I was in the worst pain of all. I couldn't sleep, pain meds weren't working anymore. I texted Dr.Aiken feeling terrible with this last tooth my gums were inflamed & throbbing. Even on his vacation he responded to me and said "he is out of the country but his partner Dr.Shessel was in the office and would be more than happy to see me if he has time & to call the office" Dr.Shessel was just as amazing. He and his assistant Mrs.Sharon took their time with me because I was in so much pain. I can not thank you all enough for all you've done. I feel so much better already. 1000 Stars

I can't speak highly enough about this office. I have never felt such genuine care about my dental concerns. This office is top notch in every department. Kristina and Eunice have been so patient with me when making appointments and rescheduling. Michael and Carlos make you feel so comfortable, it's like you're chatting with a good family friend. Dr. Shessel has been the most thorough and attentive doctor I have ever seen. And I have seen A LOT of dentists/oral surgeons/ortho/etc. because of my unfortunate dental genetics which has left me missing my adult lateral incisors. It is a very embarrassing matter for me, and I wanted a doctor who was the best in the business to help me tackle this. I'm grateful I didn't rush the process and that I found Dr.Shessel and his team when I did. If you are afraid of having surgery but need a procedure done, set up an appointment with them! You will leave feeling so much lighter because they'll break down all the steps of the process with patience and understanding. Love this office and what they've done to make me feel comfortable and, oddly enough, more confident. You guys rock!

After experiencing a traumatic dental injury, another oral surgeon fixed my teeth with a dental arch bar to hold my front teeth in place. I didn't have dental insurance at the time. The price out of pocket was about $1500. When the time came to have the device removed, the oral surgeon wanted to charge me around $2200! I refused to pay him that because that seemed really unethical and that was not part of the original treatment plan. I was furious to say the least. I called several different oral surgeons in the span of about a year and no one wanted to remove the dental arch placed by someone else. Thank God I found Dr. Aiken! When he agreed to see me I was overcome with emotions. When I arrived at the office everyone was so pleasant and warm. Dr. Aiken told me he was sorry that that happened to me and he could remove it with no problem. The procedure took about 20 mins and was virtually pain free. I will never forget how kind and caring Dr. Aiken is. He is an exceptional Dr. who not only is an expert in his field but also emotionally intelligent which is something you cannot learn in any school! I have told all of my friends and family about OSSA.

I had four wisdom teeth removed today and it was actually a great experience. From the time I made the appointment until me walking out of the office after the procedure was over, I was treated with great care. And all of this was from a same day appointment that was made after another oral surgeon put my appointment out two months. The X-rays, the procedure, and post-op instructions were explained thoroughly, and I'm following the instructions to the letter. They gave me a printout of what to do, which is also on their website, and get this...the doctor actually gave me his cell phone number to text in case I have any complications. Talk about service! Anyway, long story short...If you're looking to get your wisdom teeth removed, I'd truly recommend these guys. And this is from a guy who goes to the dentist every 6 months religiously and truly hates pain. These guys are the real deal.

It was my first time experiencing being sedated for a dental procedure. I was extremely nervous but I was in great hands the Oral Surgery Specialist of Atlanta These people are amazing! They answered every question I had and everyone was extremely helpful, patient and friendly with me. I could not have had a better experience! Everyone was amazing. As someone with severe anxiety and fear surrounding anything dental, there aren't enough positive words to describe Dr. Shessel and Oral Surgery Specialists of Atlanta. After being referred by my dentist to have four impacted wisdom teeth and two molars extracted, I met with Dr. Shessel for a consultation. Right from the beginning, he was extremely kind, professional, and knowledgeable, and was very respectful about my fear of having dental work done. He took his time to answer all of my questions in detail, and my treatment plan with him consisted of only needing two wisdom teeth out (rather than all four), per his expert opinion. He spoke about how he likes to be as conservative as possible with treatment plans, and I really appreciated his honesty and suggestion to remove even less teeth than were originally recommended by my dentist. While this was specific to my particular case and situation, it very appreciated and such a pleasant surprise! I left my consultation feeling like I was in the best hands possible, and as ready as I could be for my procedure. I went in for my procedure this morning, and everything was so much easier and less scary than I had anticipated! If you're someone with anxiety like me, please know that you have absolutely no reason to be worried when you choose OSSA! I know that's easier said than done, but Dr. Shessel is the best at what he does, and cares deeply for his patients. His assistant Michael was amazing as well, and even though I was a nervous wreck, I had so fun getting to chat with him while he prepped me for my procedure, and I really appreciated his kindness and fun personality. For the actual procedure, they started my IV for the general anesthesia, and I woke up what felt like one second later in the recovery room. I have absolutely no memory or awareness from any part of the procedure, or even of falling asleep. One second I was awake and nervous, talking to Dr. Shessel, and the next I was done. It was really that easy! One of my biggest fears prior to the procedure came from the thought of experiencing any part of the surgery, and I experienced NONE of it. I couldn't believe it! I'm now 7 hours post-op, and the only pain medication I've had to take was some ibuprofen when I got home. My discomfort is very minimal (and currently no pain), and I'm sure this is due to both Dr. Shessel's expertise and my choice to be given Exparel during my procedure--a pain medication applied directly to my surgical sites, which is an alternative to taking narcotics. This option was presented to me during my consultation, and I was thrilled to accept it. It's definitely worth not having to take scary prescriptions that can cause side effects while you're trying to heal. Lastly, Dr. Shessel personally called me this evening to check up on me and see if I had any questions. As an anxious person who often has a lot of questions, this was so incredibly appreciated! I know this review was long, but I am SO grateful for Dr. Shessel, everyone I interacted with at OSSA (they're all so nice!), and for my dentist for sending me their way. Although I'm hoping I won't have another reason to have oral surgery again anytime soon, I would absolutely be going back to Dr. Shessel if I ever did, knowing that my experience would be easy and non-eventful in the best way. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Highly recommend this place of you are a first time patient. The entire staff is super friendly and great! I had the pleasure of Dr. Shessel working on me. He is great and wonderful doctor. He made sure to explain everything to make sure I was comfortable and to know what will happen before the procedure. He was great answering all my questions too.

My husband had surgery scheduled to have his wisdom teeth pulled. They informed him in advance we would have to pay out of pocket and submit reimbursement to our insurance. The day before the surgery he received an email advising payment of the surgery was required two days before. Therefore, we immediately made the transaction. When he arrived for his appointment and sat in the chair to begin the procedure they informed him his blood pressure was too high to proceed. I appreciate their concern for his health but at that point the transaction had already been made. Instead of being able to receive an immediate reimbursement he was told their accounting department would have to mail the reimbursement. Very unprofessional and lack of empathy for customers sacrifice of time and finances. Instead of waiting weeks for a check in the mail we will return to the office to receive reimbursement whenever it is ready.

Dr. Aiken and his staff are amazing and so professional. I went in on a referral to get my molar extracted. I was in SO much pain with the molar sitting on a nerve plus having a cavity, hence it was a difficult extraction. Dr. Aiken and his assistant were extremely patient with me, talked me through the whole procedure, and made sure I was as comfortable as possible despite the severe pain. I had been in pain for weeks, seen three different dentist and not one could help me relieve my dental pain! Each dentist piggy back of the next telling me why my teeth pain was hurting so severe! Not one took the time to look at the X-Ray or my mouth to see where the severity of my pain was coming from! I tried to get an appointment with several oral surgeons in my area of Athens, Georgia but not one could see me for weeks. I was literally crying because I could get no help! My daughter found Dr. Aiken and his staff! I gave them a call, I was in so much pain & tears! The nice lady at the front dest asked if I can come in the next day just for a consultation, I said yes but she called me back & said she could hear the tears & pain in my voice so she gave me an appointment for consultation & tooth extraction that next morning at 9:00am. I got there, filled out my paperwork & was called to the back in less than five minutes! I was told my pain was from my wisdom tooth by 3 different dentist, just to find out by Dr. Aiken that it was my two upper side teeth! I decided to get them extracted because I was over the pain. He showed me how bad the teeth was! Dr. Aiken & the entire office was so nice & caring! Dr. Aiken even gave me his personal cell number to text him if I had any questions or concerns from the extractions. I didn't text him but he texted me to check on me! I was in and out of there in less than a hour, maybe 30 minutes if that! I am so Grateful to the lady that answered that phone who genuinely cared and the entire staff! I would recommend this oral surgery center any day! A big thanks to the entire staff!
