Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires a minimum of four additional years of hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Johnson manages a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. Dr. Johnson practices a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to corrective jaw surgery. This also includes techniques designed to rebuild bone structure with minimal surgical intervention and optimal patient comfort. We can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.
The surgical staff at OMSS are experienced, certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants, who assist in administration of IV sedation and surgery. Our front office staff are informed administrative personnel, well-versed in health and insurance policies, and are also CPR certified.
Dr. James David Johnson, Jr. earned a B.S. Degree from Rhodes College in 1978 and graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1982. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville and became certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) in 1992.
He recertified in 2002 and 2012 and has served as an ABOMS board examiner. The National Dental Board of Anesthesiology also certifies Dr. Johnson. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine.
Dr. Johnson has served as Chairman of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Committee on Public and Professional Communication and as a member of the AAOMS Faculty Education Development Awards Committee. He is Past President of both the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Tennessee Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Johnson has been on the AAOMS Board of Trustees, served as Treasurer and is currently the Vice President.
For 15 years, Dr. Johnson served as the national oral and maxillofacial surgery spokesperson for the American Dental Association. He is the recipient of the 2003 AAOMS Presidential Achievement Award, the 2004 Tennessee Dental Association Fellowship Award and was the 2004 Second District Dental Society Dentist of the Year. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
David lives in Oak Ridge with his wife (Caroline) and their two sons, JD and Thomas. Davids children with his deceased wife (Elizabeth), Andy, Katie and Carolyn respectively live in Chicago, Knoxville and New York.

Absolute best staff I have ever dealt with in my 64 years. Everyone is so knowledgeable, makes you very relaxed and feel comfortable. I really feel like they cared. I didn't even need an anxiety pill. Lol

Dr Johnson is absolutely the best!! He is so patient. He definitely caters to cowards. I had to have several teeth removed. He calmed my nervousness and I had minimal pain! He takes his time to explain everything and answer all questions. (even the silly ones) The staff is nice but his kindness and professionalism keeps me coming back. I highly recommend Dr Johnson!

Dissatisfied and had to pay for consult out of pocket because they didn't inform us that they did not accept Tricare Insurance. So found another dentist to do extractions and implants.

Not the worst experience ever, and the nurses were very nice at the beginning. However I really felt unprepared for the post-op experience, and if I had been more aware of that before hand I would have had a much more pleasant experience. I also got a cut on my lip sometime during the surgery which did not feel super professional.

This place was amazing! Had a tooth removed and they were very nice, assertive and made sure I was very comfortable the whole time! I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out next and I will be coming here for sure. 10/10 recommend!

I was super nervous about having my wisdom teeth removed. Everyone in the office was so nice and took the time to answer my questions and make sure I was comfortable with every step of the process. Would definitely recommend.

For some reason they frowned on billing my primary insurance for a upcoming procedure. They wanted cash upfront. I had more knowledge of what my insurance would cover than they did. They tried to charge me a $2250 deductible. That was not owed to them . When they called my ins. in front of me they were told this fee would be waived.

Everyone, from start to finish, was so kind and helpful!! The Dr. spent plenty of time in the room making certain my daughter, nor myself, did not leave with any uncertainties. The nurses did a fabulous job showing care and compassion for my daughter's situation and pain. We look forward to letting this team take excellent care of our daughter.
