During her time in dental school, she discovered her passion for orthodontics and went on to pursue further post-graduate training as part of a dual degree program at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
In addition to three years of specialty training in the Rutgers orthodontic department, for which she was awarded a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics, she also earned a Master of Science in Dentistry Degree in 2006.
Over the years, Dr. Barakat has continued to dedicate herself to the orthodontic craft in many different settings, including large practices, small private practices, and as an independent consultant.
Dr. Barakat regularly attends conferences and continuing education courses to keep up to date with the latest in orthodontic technology so that she can provide the highest quality treatments for her patients.
When not in the clinic, Dr. Barakat enjoys skiing, hiking, and just about any outdoor activity, especially in the company of her husband, Mark, two daughters, Jennah and Kathryn, as well as her Shih Tzu, Gabby.
Dr. Monika Barakat was born and raised in the south of Poland prior to moving to New Jersey at the age of 15. She received her Bachelors of Art in Biology in 1999 from Kean University and her DMD degree from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, formerly New Jersey Dental School, in 2003. During her time in dental school, she discovered a passion for orthodontics and thus pursued further post-graduate training as part of a dual degree program at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. In addition to three years of specialty training in the orthodontic department, for which she was awarded a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics, she also pursued and earned a Master of Science in Dentistry Degree in 2006.
Over the course of the next 10 years, Dr. Barakat welcomed two beautiful girls into the world, moved from New Jersey to Ohio and then Arizona as her husband began and then finished his specialty training. All the while, she continued to dedicate herself to practice exclusively orthodontics in many diverse settings, both within large groups, small private practices, and as an independent consultant. Nonetheless, she always dreamt of opening up her own office, with the goal of demanding excellence of herself and those around her for the best possible patient outcomes. Soon after realizing that her family was thriving in Arizona and had found a home, she began to pursue that dream: after nearly two years of planning, Opus 1 Orthodontic Studio opened its doors in 2016.
An orthodontist is a dentist, but a dentist is not an Orthodontist. All orthodontists are dentists first, but though not every dentist has the qualifications to be an orthodontist. Dr. Barakat continued her formal education for 2 or 3 additional years before receiving the necessary license and certification. As an orthodontist, Dr. Barakat has spent years studying nothing but how and why to move teeth. This includes what to do, how to plan, and how to execute the appropriate treatment plan.
Specialists receive additional training to give them the skills needed to deal with more complex orthodontic problems. Dentists receive basic orthodontic training which allows them to perform root canals, extract wisdom teeth, and treat young children who do not need to see an orthodontist yet.

I don't even know where to begin! Dr. Barakat is truly an artist. A PERFECTIONIST. She is very professional and knowledgeable in her field; she uses the latest technology to give you the most perfect smile as quickly as possible. I had a deadline for grad school and we were able to achieve my amazing smile with two months to spare! Her personnel and team (Amber & Beth!!) are very kind and wonderfully trained; they do their best to make you feel comfortable! The office is beyond clean and has a joyful, welcoming atmosphere. Scheduling was always a breeze and very flexible with my hectic work schedule. I truly had a fantastic experience choosing her as my orthodontist! Recently moved and needed to find a new orthodontist when I found Opus 1. My first experience was absolutely fantastic. Dr. Bakarat and her staff make the atmosphere so comforting. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Beth at the front desk is amazing, from the first phone call alone you already feel welcomed. Dr. Bakarat talked me through the entire process and made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire thing. If you're thinking about visiting -- just do it you will not regret it!

From the start to the finish this was a fantastic experience! I can't say enough about Monika and her Opus 1 team. From day one when they were super welcoming and offered excellent information and easy to book appointments to the day my daughter and son got their braces off and they have absolutely gorgeous and healthy smiles!! I would give them 10 stars if I could.

I have nothing but great things to say about Opus 1! The staff is just amazing, friendly and always helpful in trying to be flexible with getting me in around my busy work schedule. Dr. Barakat is by far the most wonderful, knowledgeable and talented orthodontist out there! I actually found her because I work in the dental field and everyone I worked with recommended her. She really takes the time to explain the treatment every step of the way, answer any questions and is a hands on orthodontist. Her work truly is beautiful. She completely transformed my smile in ways I couldn't even imagine possible! Yes, my smile is exceeding my expectations thanks to her and awesome team!! Can't thank you guys enough! I love Opus 1! I knew from the moment I walked in 2 years ago for a consultation (and walked out with braces the same day!) that I was in the best hands possible! The most welcoming office I've ever been to! The staff is always so friendly and Dr. Barakat is so knowledgeable, communicative and a perfectionist (which is exactly what I need in an orthodontist). I cannot say enough about how much we love Opus 1!!! I have had two children receive treatment, and we are so happy with the care their team provides. The office staff is friendly and welcoming. Dr. Barakat takes the time to get to know her patients and their families. She explains the treatment plan thoroughly to parents and the kids so everyone knows what to expect. We have had a wonderful experience!!!

I just finished my invisilign and I am super happy with my result! Dr. Barakat is a perfectionist like me so she wouldn't stop until my teeth were perfect. She is very talented and smart. I was so lucky to find such a great orthodontist. The clinic is very clean and decorated in a modern fun way. All the equipment is state of the art. I definitely recommend Opus 1 for any of your orthodontic needs!

Dr. Monika Barakat and her team at Opus 1 are the best. As an adult getting my teeth corrected was a bit intimidating. The onboarding as a new patient was smooth and easy. Dr. Barakat and her staff are welcoming, explain everything and extremely professional. I have been impressed with the level of care and am happy and confident in how my smile is developing.
