Air Abrasion is a drill-less technique that is being used in place of a drill for removing decay. Because there is no drill, no high pitched drill noise, and the drill-less tool uses a spray, the procedure is more stress-less and safer than traditional drilling.
During air abrasion, an instrument that works like a mini sandblaster is used to spray away decay. During air abrasion, a fine stream of particles is aimed at the decayed portion of the tooth. These particles are made of silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture and are propelled toward the tooth surface by compressed air or a gas that runs through the dental handpiece. Small particles of decay on the tooth surface are removed as the stream of particles strikes them. The particles of decay are then suctioned away through a thin tube.
Air abrasion is much more conservative than a drill. Because it is less invasive and slower to remove decay, more heath tooth tissue remains intact. The silica water spray used in the Air Abrasion sprayer requires some precautions. Protective eye wear (to prevent eye irritation from the spray) and the use of a rubber dam (a rubber sheet that fits around teeth) or protective resin applied to nearby teeth and gums to protect areas of the mouth that arent being treated.

Dr. Garelick is a local contributor to the community. He is the Founder and Chair of the Mentor Program at the Arizona Dental Association as well as the Chair of the Committee for Continuing Education.
Aside from Dr. Garelicks professional achievements and involvement, he is very concerned with the neighboring community. He supports the community by funding programs at the local high school and volunteering time at the Neighborhood Christian Clinic and the Give a Kid a Smile program.

9/14/2022 Update: The Ocotillo Dental Care team is still a keeper! After several years as their patient, still the same top notch service, friendliness, and of course, Dr. G's magic touch when it comes to dentistry. Even with my challenging situation (lifelong bruxism with seriously grounded down teeth), he always comes through with the least invasive solution and can get it done right the first time without those annoying multiple visits you may be required with other dentists. Amazing! ========== Dr. G and staff are friendly, talented at what they do (Dr. G actually used to teach dental students), efficient, and no upselling! The best thing about Dr. G is that he always has the patient's--not his--best interests in mind and you know you are getting top-notch work that will last (unlike some other dentists) at reasonable prices! Plus, his office is right there in the Albertson's shopping center and booking an appt is a breeze with his friendly staff! I was so impressed with Dr. G and his staff that I got the rest of my family (including my 7 year old daughter) moved over to Ocotillo Dental Care. These guys are keepers! Highly recommend!!!

Ocotillo Dental Care has been my husband and my dentist for 10+ years. The team is great. However it wasn't until I brought in our 4 year old daughter who had had traumatic experiences at two other dentists that I realized how great they are! Brenda immediately sensed that she was terrified and went to work diffusing the situation. She allowed my daughter to sit on my lap and we talked for a good ten min. Brenda showed her all the tools and let her touch and ask questions. Brenda explained the whole visit step by step and was very patient with both myself and my daughter. During the cleaning I think I was actually the more nervous one. I couldn't have been more impressed. I had prepared my daughter that this was an adult dentist and they may not have toys and if they didn't, we had a plan but Kerry came through with a bunch of little trinkets that my daughter loved on top of the gifts from Brenda. The visit was a success! We've shown everyone who will give us time all the goodies. I know next time won't be without nerves but I think this visit will help a lot. I don't know why I didn't think to bring her here earlier but I couldn't be more proud of her and thankful for Dr. Garelick, Brenda & Kerry. Thank you all!
