Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.
Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.
Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.
If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!
The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

I was born & raised in Warren, Michigan, where I grew up as the oldest of five rambunctious children. I graduated valedictorian of my high school class & received a full academic scholarship to Wayne State University in Detroit. There I received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology & realized my passion for healthcare. My love of drawing & painting made dentistry seem like the perfect balance between patient care & art.
I am a board-certified general dentist with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Ohio State University. Dont worry though! As a Michigan native, I remained true to my Mitten State & always cheered on the Wolverines.

I believe its my duty to provide each patient with the most state-of-the-art dentistry possible & therefore I take continuing education very seriously. Our office is on the cutting edge of technology because thats what I would want for myself & my family.
When Im not in the office, my time is spent with my family. My husband Jonathan & I have three little ones; Alex, Dominic & a baby girl named Zoe. You might occasionally catch one or two of them in the office raiding the toy chest. My kids are my life, but on the rare occasion I have some free time, you can find me going for a run in the outdoors.

Dr Glashwish comes highly recommended. Her chair side manner is not comparable. The ladies at the front desk are extremely helpful from booking to giving me my estimate on my treatment. Love this place.

Having had several terrifying dental experiences, I was very nervous and anxious about going back to the dentist. The hygienist Kelly and Dr. Gladwish made my visit so comfortable and they both were so encouraging and set my nerves at ease. This is the very first dentist visit that I actually enjoyed! I told my friends and family about Northstar Family Dentistry and they will start going as well! Everyone was so professional and kind.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the visit I had at Northstar Family Dentistry. The staff was very professional and made me feel at ease about all aspects of the visit. This is our oldest first time going to Northstar dentist an Dr.Malette was great with our oldest an she was very thorough with what was going on with his teeth an everything. Plus what will be done as well. The two receptionist ladies we very friendly an they really made me feel relax an everything. So we will see how they are as the months go on. But so far we are pleased with them. To just give an update on Northstar they were great. They got all of my family in an did what they needed to with us an we were so pleased with their work an how they explained everything to us. They really made us feel comfortable an relaxed when they did what they needed to for us on our teeth. I highly recommend them to anyone...

They go above and beyond when it comes to patient care and advocacy... from procedures, to referrals, appointment accommodations and everything in between... nothing but the best care from this team! Fantastic Dentist and staff. I needed a crown and root canal, suggested by another Dentist. Dr Aboona upon exam, found no root canal needed. Crown was made in office no temp, no 2nd trip needed. Saved time and money. Impressed with the updated equipment and procedures. We found our new dentist and recommended to family members. This was worth traveling 40 minutes to know that the the doctor and her staff have their patients best needs as a priority. Thanks Northstar.

By far the best dental office! The staff is so friendly and helpful. The dentists are incredible, they explain things so you can understand them. The office is clean and organized. I work full time and their schedule is accommodating to my needs. Highly recommend Northstar Family Dentistry!!

This is a new dentist for my family and my 4 year old needed some pretty intense dental work done, I can not say enough about this office. Every single person from the second you walk in are welcoming, they explain everything, and they were so wonderful with my son. I would recommend them to anyone 100%.

I have been to a few Dentist over the past 78 years and none have treated me more friendly and fairly then North Star. They treat me with the utmost respect and make sure of what they have preformed (Implants, Tooth Extraction and Cleanings) are followed up with phone calls to make sure i am OK.

First visit and an amazing experience. Staff is very friendly and competent, Dr Aboona was unbelievably careful and considerate. Absolutely NO negatives whatsoever. We are very glad we decided to switch to this office. Edit - one year later!................ Nothing but GOOD experiences at this dentist group after three more visits.

I cannot say enough positive things about this office from my cleaning two months ago to a filling I received from Dr. Malette yesterday. I was terrified to have anything done due to past dental trauma and permanent damage in my mouth. Dr. Malette made my experience yesterday with my fillings so wonderful. She was so kind and caring. She went above and beyond. I no longer have any anxiety about going for future care! I would HIGHLY recommend this office to anyone!

Best dentist ever. I use to be afraid of the dentist, so nervous to go to any dentist to the point where I only went one time over probably 15 years. I've always had bad experiences. I went here for a dental emergency and had work done by Dr. Malette and for the first time ever I had a good experience at a dentist. They make you feel very comfortable now I no longer fear the dentist and continue to make regular appointments here. I have had a lot of work done here, fillings, root canals, crowns, and recently some cosmetic work and I could not be more happy with the outcome. I finally have confidence in smile. I would recommend her and this practice to anyone. It was truly a life changing experience for me coming here.
