Dr. John Merrill was raised in Michigan as the youngest of five children. His father was a chemical engineer who became a full-time Methodist minister in his 30s. His mother was a full-time mother and homemaker who went into social work, devoting her focus to helping victims of domestic violence. She even wrote much of todays social work training curriculum for the state of Michigan.
Dr. Merrill is a graduate of Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan, which was voted the #1 dental school worldwide in 2019. He practiced for 25 years in the northern lakeside community of Charlevoix, MI where he was devoted to his patients, his church, and his five children: three of which are adopted.
He, his wife Natalie, and six of their eight children moved to North Carolina in 2008 where Dr. Merrill was hired as medical director for Carolinas Center for Oral Health and to head up a multi-specialty dental practice as part of the Carolinas Healthcare System.
He served there for over five years, treating patients and leading their organization in the highest patient satisfaction scores. He is a nationally recognized clinician treating many dentists as patients throughout his career.
He approached Dr. Merrill with the story of Fundi who had some severe dental issues. Fundi and her grandmother were traveling 16 hours one way to see a dentist in Kathmandu! Despite their efforts, they were in desperate need of an enormous amount of dental care and expenses.
Your local Huntersville dentist, Dr. David Bunn, was born and raised in Michigan but spent vacations in North Carolina visiting family and enjoying places like the Outer Banks. Spending time with his familys dentist kindled his interest in dentistry as a way to combine his two passions: helping people and expressing himself artistically.
Today, he restores smiles bringing together beauty and function as our dental implant doctor in Huntersville, NC. Dr. Bunn is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, which was voted the Open new tab to read article #1 dental school worldwide in 2019.
Following dental school, he furthered his training through a general dentistry residency program through the University of Florida. This training focused on comprehensive dentistry, including dental implants. He returned to Michigan where he worked in a private practice for three years. When the opportunity arose to move to North Carolina, he jumped at the chance to relocate and escape the cold. Since 2017, hes called North Carolina home, and were thrilled to offer his amazing expertise in restorative dentistry.

Who has FUN at the dentist? I Do!! Omygosh I love these humans! I cracked a molar & a lot of laughs during my visit today!! Dr Merrill restored my malfunctioning molar quickly & painlessly --- such a "fun-tastic" team! Plus I had VIP Service Care from Natalie Merrill who made me a custom mouthguard! Well... she told me I needed a mouth guard since I grind my teeth at night! #ouch! But ...it's the pleasant way she explains & consults with you ...you know you are in good hands & paws too--with Northstar Steve (he's a great comfort) ~ Love this group of folks who truly care about YOU along with your brilliant smile!

This is the best Dental Clinic I have ever been to. All of the staff have great attention to detail, explains things in a way that's easy to understand, actually works with you to get you on a plan towards your goals, and has been the most thorough with their exams. I would recommend anyone to go here. So glad I found this place!

Everyone at the office made me feel so comfortable. Dr. Bunn was awesome and always made sure to stop to make sure I was ok during my treatment. The office is so inviting and really makes a potentially unpleasant experience (for me) and turns it into something I look forward to. Oh they also baked a delicious bread and when I asked what smelled so good they gave me the entire loaf! Thanks to the entire team!

Phenomenal. That's the first word that comes to mind. My hygienist, I believe her name was Nicole, was so kind and so caring. I expressed how I was feeling slightly anxious as I had not paid a visit to the dentist in over 8 years. She did not judge and she was so incredibly sweet. Best dental experience ever.

My experience with Dr. MERRILL began before NORTHSTAR DENTISTRY, when Dr.MERRILL serve at Carolina Healthcare. I was referred to Dr. MERRILL by a co-worker, and I never looked back! DR. MERRILL is kind, gentle, and always smiling he's concerned about your dental treatment plan. Dr. Merrill prioritizes your dental plan, with my issues Dr. MERRILL always worked it out for me. Dr.BUNN another kind, caring, gentle dentist, who prioritizes your dental plan and for me he works it out. These two DENTIST are the BEST in the dental field, passionate dentist! When you walk through the doors everyone greets you with genuine smiles ready to assist you. I call her my hygienist, Amber, your teeth never felt better after she cleans, Kelly, Receptionist knowledgeable on your financial needs, the assistant are Phenomenal and I can't forget Steve, the therapy dog that makes you smile. Natalie, makes you feel like your at home. All your dental need are meet and then some, may I share you also receive snacks, water, chocolate, coffee and even baked bread. I have been enjoying this place until I was stacked up so high with cost. Pricing breakdowns before scheduling any service was not discussed and now my insurance is maxed out? I'm sorry but this is it. I literally just paid them out of pocket at last service so this cannot be true.

From beginning to end the environment was very friendly and professional. I was greeted with warm welcomes and smiles. To top it off, a beautiful fluffy dog by the name of Steve approached me as if to say thanks for choosing Northstar Dentistry! Ms. Marsha (dental hygienist) was gentle and she listened to all my dental anxieties with a smile. Best pain free cleaning EVER! Dr. Bunn finished my appointment with lots a positive recommendations to continue giving me a healthy smile. This practice has AMAZING professionals who really value their patients. My husband and I have been seeing Dr. Bunn for the last year and are extremely satisfied with his service. From the hygienists (Amber and Dallas) to the receptionists everyone will greet you with a smile. The staff is very professional, knowledgeable and friendly and will make you feel comfortable visiting the dentist office regardless of how long it has been since your last visit.

Super friendly, helpful and accommodating. They do a fabulous job every time :) I've had Dr. Bunn for regular cleanings, filling replacements, bonding, and a crown. I've been very happy with all the work he has done! They helped me plan out visits to replace old fillings, and are always very upfront with pricing. I moved to SC and I still drive to Huntersville to go to Dr. Bunn.
