Dr. A. Garrett Gouldin grew up about 15 miles south of Richmond, Virginia, in the small town of Chester. When he was 10 years old, he expressed interest in dentistry to his parents, so his mother took him to the local dentist regularly to observe. From that moment forward, Dr. Gouldin was clear regarding his vocation.
The doctor went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1988. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1992, and subsequently completed his periodontal certification and Masters degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1995 with the highest honors. (In 1993, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio was ranked the top dental school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.) The doctors subject of study for his Masters thesis was periodontal guided tissue regeneration. Dr. Gouldin was the lead author of an article generated from this thesis which was published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology in 1996.
Dr. Gouldin has been practicing periodontics with an emphasis on dental implant techniques in downtown Falls Church since 1995. In November 2000, Dr. Gouldin became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a title which denotes periodontics highest status.
It is Dr. Gouldins ongoing goal to stay completely informed on all periodontal and dental implant related procedures and topics of study through continued education. The doctor is qualified to treat patients with a number of periodontal and dental implant needs, and he is certified in the S.M.A.R.T. Minimally Invasive Bone Grafting Procedure, the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), and the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique.
Dr. Gouldin was recognized in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 in Washingtonian Magazine as one of the top periodontists in the Washington area, as determined by his peers. Dr. Gouldin is the co-founder and co-leader of the Northern Virginia Periodontics Synergy Study Series, the Northern Virginia Periodontics Spear Study Club, and the Northern Virginia Periodontics Hygiene Study Series.
As part of the executive board of the Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS), Dr. Gouldin has served as Community Charity Events Chair, Parliamentarian, Secretary/Treasurer, Programs Chair, Vice-President, President (2007-2008), Executive Committee Chair (2008-2009), and he is currently the Ethics Committee Chair for the NVDS, and the state level Ethics Committee Chair for the Virginia Dental Association. Dr. Gouldin is honored to be a Fellow of both The Virginia Dental Association and The American College of Dentists. The doctor was inducted into the American College of Dentists in 2008 only 3.5% of dentists in the nation are fellows of the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Gouldin met his wife, Liz, while they were both attending Virginia Tech. They live in Great Falls, Virginia, and have three children, Ashton, Katherine and Jack. On Christmas Day, 2020, Brynn, a female German Shepard, joined the Gouldin family.
The doctor enjoys family time, regular exercise, golfing and snow skiing, as well as spiritual/church activities. An avocation of Dr. Gouldins is all aspects of psychology, especially the field of Positive Psychology.
Dr. Francisco T. Carlos grew up in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2003, he achieved a Bachelor of Artsdegree in Biology from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He obtained his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry from the Universityof Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut in 2007, and subsequently completed his periodontal certification andMasters degree at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 2010. The doctors subject of study for his Masters thesis was gingival esthetics.
Upon completing his periodontal training Dr. Carlos joined the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer, where he treated our active duty military members and taught periodontics to the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents. Dr. Carlos completed his active duty commitment in Septemberof2013, and separated as a Major, with awards such as the Dental Squadron Company Grade Officer of the Year.Dr. Carlos has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since May 11, 2012.

Dr. Carlos was selected as a 2016 Top Dental Specialist by the Washington Consumers Checkbook, was nominated by his peers as a Top Periodontist in Virginia Living Magazine in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, as well as Top Dentist by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Dr. Carlos was also selected as a 2019 and 2021 Washingtonian Top Dentist.
In his time away from work, Dr. Carlos enjoys golf, traveling, sporting events, exercising, and coaching his daughters various sports teams. He is married to his wife, Melany, whom he met while at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. They have two beautiful daughters, Lily andFera.
Dr. Gohel strives to remain at the forefront of clinical advances in the field with ongoing continuing education, and maintains involvement with numerous professional organizations including the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, International Team for Implantology, Academy of Osseointegration, and the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons. He is also engaged locally, with involvement in the Northern Virginia Dental Society and Spear Study Club. Dr Gouldin and his team are my favorite! Gum graft surgery isn't exactly something I want to experience again but I've had it done twice with Dr Gouldin (and once elsewhere) and I can say he's the best. He uses gentle yet state of the art techniques and I'm impressed with the results and speed if healing. Everyone in the office is kind, friendly, and helpful. The whole staff was extremely friendly and helpful with any questions I had. No one seemed like they were In a rush to get me out of the office. Dr goshel was extremely knowledgeable and explained my gum graph procedure in detail. He did not try to up sell me like I felt some other periodontist have. I did not have any work there yet so I am only reviewing the consultation process. Will definitely return for dental work.

Gum graft with an excellent outcome. Dr. Gouldin is a talented surgeon. I needed a gum graft on my bottom front teeth. My first procedure had a rare complication and I required a subsequent surgery. Dr. Gouldin was in personal contact with me following the first procedure and communicated in detail the strategy for the follow-up surgery, which was performed at no charge. The doctor and staff accommodated me for a special appointment outside of normal hours for my follow-up procedure. After a month, my outcome has been outstanding with greater root coverage on my teeth than was anticipated. Dr. Gouldin has been available for questions and maintains an interest in my case. The personal and professional care that I received has been impressive. The result will allow me to enjoy healthy teeth for a lifetime. Thank you for taking care of me!

Dr. Goulding at Northern VA Periodontics performed a rather extensive repair of my receding gums using the "Chao" procedure on almost all of my upper teeth and a more traditional soft tissue graft on a lower incisor. The 3.5 hour procedure was executed flawlessly and the recovery and healing process was very smooth with no complications. The results are quite dramatic! Dr. Goulding was extremely professional, explained everything thoroughly, answered all of my questions, and was sensitive to my needs throughout. He and his entire staff were very pleasant and easy to work with, and obviously proficient in their areas of expertise. The whole organization is run very efficiently and professionally. I am extremely satisfied with my experience and recommend them highly without hesitation.

I needed periodontal work done including a tooth extraction and installation of the base for the dental implant. Not a fun routine. Dr Gouldin was compassionate and throughly explained in clear terms what was involved. I never felt rushed. The end result was a replacement that causes no pain. I highly recommend Dr Gouldin.

My first service/treatment plan with the office spread out for more than a year. Throughout the process the office team, the doctor's assistants and the periodontist were very helpful and kind. The service was laid out in details and my doctor always willing to spend time answering any questions I had. Very friendly and efficient staff and during the pandemic the practice follows the health protocols accordingly. I am 100% satisfied client all around.

First of all I wish I can give Northern Virginia Periodontics more then just 5 stars. The staff made me feel very welcome and they all take the necessary precautions of Covid which made me feel comfortable coming here. I had a tooth that went bad and I was in tears because I take great care of my teeth. Dr. Gouldin was wonderful he explained to me what needed to be done and time for everything to heal. Also, the fact he said to me "everything will be ok." He is genuinely a nice kind person and is always willing to take time to explain things to you. I highly recommend this practice.

Noone ever enjoys dental work being performed on them. You can only hope the doctor is as skilled as they claim to be. But with Dr. Gouldin, you get the utmost professional, knowledgeable and friendliest exchanges. Throughout the process of my gum graft (from initial consultation to post gum graft follow-up), the team at Northern Virginia Periodontics and Dr. Gouldin were extremely informative and answered all of my questions putting me at ease, and most importantly, attentive. The procedure itself was surprisingly painless for me (I realize this may be different for everyone). The recovery went well, as long as you're following the aftercare instructions provided, all is fine. With 100% confidence and from my personal experience with Dr. Gouldin and his team, I can say you're in good care and would highly recommend him if you're in need of a gum graft, or a good periodontist.

Dr. Gouldin is my first ( and only ) periodontist. My dentist recommended that I see him for a gum graph, which I put off for quite some time - fear of the unknown. The entire process was as easy as could be. The whole office staff is friendly and immediately puts you at ease. They understand that some people might be apprehensive about these type of dental procedures. In retrospect, there's no reason to worry. Everything was explained to me in detail and I went into the surgery feeling very confident and comfortable. Pain was not an issue. The procedure was flawless. Even the recovery wasn't bad. I totally recommend Dr. Gouldin and the staff at Northern Virginia Periodontics. I can't imagine the process being any easier or better.
