Dr. Rob Caskey (retired) practiced orthodontics as a specialist in Flagstaff for over 20 years before his long-time friend Dr. Eric Peterson (right) joined the practice, and the name Northern Arizona Orthodontics was born! For the next 8 years, the two of them built a strong reputation in Flagstaff for having an incredibly fun, friendly, and caring practice. In 2013, Dr. Caskeys daughter, Dr. Emily Peppers (left), became the third doctor on the team. Dr. Rob Caskey retired in 2021 and now Dr. Eric Peterson and Dr. Emily Peppers run a cutting-edge orthodontic specialty practice focused first on YOU and your experience as the patient.

Dr. Eric Peterson graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 2002 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He then completed a general practice residency at the University of Utah Hospital from 2002 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005, he attended the Saint Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education, focusing on an orthodontic specialty, to earn his Master of Science in Dentistry.

Dedicated to sharing his knowledge, Dr. Peterson is the clinical orthodontist/instructor for the Winslow Indian Healthcare Center, and works closely with patients, doctors, and residents at the clinic. He developed an orthodontic lecture series that he presents to Advanced Education in General Dentistry residents, which introduces orthodontic concepts useful for both private practices in general dentistry or a foundation for an orthodontic residency. Dr. Peterson is also a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Arizona Dental Association, and the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists.

To reach out to his community, Dr. Peterson supports various school, church, and athletic organizations. He is also involved in the Northern Arizona Network for Dental Excellence (NANDE) dental study group.

Dr. Peterson has a love for the outdoors and enjoys spending time mountain biking, skiing, and trail running. He has completed ultramarathons such as Zane Grey Highline Trail 50-Mile Endurance Run, San Juan Solstice 50-Mile Run, Moab Ultimate XC, Rim-Rim-Rim (Grand Canyon), Leadville Trail 100 Run, The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (Chamonix, France), The North Face Lavaredo Ultra Trail (Cortina dAmpezzo, Dolomite mountains, Italy), Vuelta al Aneto (Benasque, Pyrenees mountains, Spain), Trail des Dents du Midi (Champery, Swiss Alps, Switzerland), the Tarawera Ultra Marathon (Rotorua, New Zealand) and the Laugavegurrin Ultra Marathon (Iceland), and the Telluride Mountain Run (Colorado).

Dr. Emily Caskey Peppers grew up in Flagstaff and attended the University of Arizona in Tucson for college. She obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Colorado in 2009, completed a General Practice Residency focusing on hospital dentistry at the University of Chicago from 2009 to 2010, and graduated from orthodontic residency at Loma Linda University in California in 2013, where she earned a Masters degree and a certificate in the specialty of orthodontics.

Dr. Peppers award-winning research has been published by the prestigious journal The Angle Orthodontist. Dr. Peppers is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, and the American Dental Association. She is the President of the Northern Arizona Dental Society and the President of the Northern Arizona Network for Dental Excellence.

Dr. Peppers has run 10 marathons (including races in Arizona, Utah, Illinois, Colorado, California, and Italy), and has completed the infamous Imogene Pass Run 10 times. She and her husband Eric Peppers have two sons, Chris and John. They all love the outdoorsespecially hiking, backpacking, biking, and skiingand they love Northern Arizona for all the outdoor adventures it offers.

Orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities in teeth to give you or your child a healthy, beautiful smile. The majority of what we do is align teeth properlyusing braces, Invisalign, spacers, palatal expanders, or other toolsto help with chewing problems, brushing and flossing issues (which can lead to cavities or gum disease), issues where the teeth are digging into the gums or roof of the mouth, spacing problems that create pain or discomfort, and aesthetic issueshelping both kids and adults feel more confident with their smiles. Orthodontics can even help with speech impediments caused by tooth misalignment.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be screened by an orthodontist no later than age 7. This early evaluation allows us to make sure that the teeth and jaws are developing properly. If things are not progressing well, we can intercept some of these issues to keep them from becoming bigger problems later in life. If early treatment is needed (often called phase one treatment), we will explain the reasons and options and help you get on the road to a healthy smile!

Designed to align your teeth without the visibility of braces, Invisalign treatment is a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that you change every one to two weeks, moving closer and closer to your ideal alignment. The benefits include near-invisibility, as well as the ability to eat and drink what you want (just remove your aligner while eating, clean your teeth afterward, and slip your aligner back in). Aligners also make it easy to brush and floss normally, without the special care required for the wires and brackets of braces.

So, why doesnt everyone go the Invisalign route? Well, traditional braces are sometimes more affordable and Invisalign only works with certain cases. If your teeth require significant shifting, braces might give you the best and fastest result.

As our bodies age and change, our teeth can too whether or not weve had orthodontic treatment. So we recommend wearing retainers in some form forever. We see our patients regularly for at least 12 months after we have finished aligning the teeth; after that, you can always call us if you need us. There are many different retainer optionsask our doctors about which ones are right for you.

In most cases, we will recommend at least one set of removable retainers. Youll need to wear your retainers consistently, clean them by brushing with toothpaste and water, and keep them in a protective case when they arent in your mouth. We will see you every three to four months for at least the first year of your retention phase.

Some issues with the teeth and jaws are best corrected with a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic (jaw) surgery. Orthognathic surgery may be used for functional changes (such as improving chewing ability or airway issues) or cosmetic corrections (idealizing the smile, facial symmetry, or profile).
