Dr. Jacob Smestad received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery Degree (DDS) from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2010. Soon after, Dr. Smestad joined his father-in-law, Dr. David Gunelson, at the current practice location in Hibbing and started becoming active in the Iron Range dental community. When Dr. Gunelson retired in 2011, Dr. Smestad started North Star Dental Care and continues Dr. Gunelson's brand of comfortable and personalized dentistry.
Dr. Smestad is originally from a small town in southern Minnesota, called St. Clair, but the abundance of outdoor activities and nearby family in northern Minnesota attracted him to Hibbing. Depending on the season he can be found biking, running, skiing, hunting, fishing and enjoying spending time with his wife, Sara, their three young children, William, Joseph and Maria and their yellow lab, Splash.
Dr. Smestad is a member of the American Dental Association, the Minnesota Dental Association, the Northeastern District Dental Society and is on the Board of Directors of the local non-profit Northern Minnesota Dental.

I wish this was a positive review, but I know when I read reviews, I appreciate honesty. My dental insurance (which is excellent coverage) shared with me that NSDC is "in network" and that they are accepting new patients. I was looking for a new dentist and I called there in 2020 and was very rudely told by a receptionist that they were not accepting new patients. And then COViD happened and I inquired again yesterday about whether they are accepting new patients as according to my insurance company they are and I received a 1 sentence reply "we are not accepting new patients". I can understand and appreciate the stress and drain the Pandemic has had on them and all health and dental care workers, but they should note on their site that they aren't taking new patients and be a bit more professional and courteous in their interactions with people who are interested in their practice. After all, they are paid for their services and we are the healthcare consumers! I found a great new dental practice who isn't too busy to be kind and respectful!

I have been to this dental facility twice and have had excellent experiences each time. The staff are friendly, caring, and go above and beyond to help you. Very effecient service and the quaility of work (bi-yearly cleanings) is awesome as well. The dentist was kind enough to smooth out my filling free of charge and was happy to do so. Kudos to the staff, hygenist, and dentist. Thank you so much for the wonderful service! -Aron

New to area trying to find a dentist and don't accept new patients disappointing will let people I know not to go here. Especially since I have a tooth that needs to be fixed.

I went there with a disaster movie unfolding in my mouth. Now I can eat without pain for the first time in two years! Still got work to do but the doctor is great at putting complicated procedures in layman's terms so I know exactly what to expect. The staff is also patient and pleasant as honeysuckle. Can't recommend enough!

I just had my first appointment with Dr. Brekke Hudelson. She was so kind, soothing and professional. The staff all of them were professional, very nice and helped with my terror of a dentist. I highly recommend this practice.
