Ira L. Shapira, DDS, Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, Diplomate American Academy of Pain Management and Fellow of the International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO), believes that each patient deserves every possible advantage against chronic health conditions. At North Shore Sleep Dentistry, Dr. Shapira offers personalized attention and state-of-the-art treatments to help patients achieve optimal dental and overall health.
Dr. Shapira graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from Ohio State University. He later earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loyola University in Chicago in 1977. He serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Rush Medical School in the mid 1980's until 1991 where he did research on jaw position and sleep apnea. His research looked at similarities in jaw position of male sleep apnea patients and female TMJ patients. Dr Shapira was one of 20 dentists worldwide that established the Sleep Disorder Dental Society which later became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Always eager to explore the connection between dentistry and holistic health, Dr. Shapira has a range of interests, from reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry to TMJ disorders and sleep apnea. He is an active member of national and local organizations such as:
Through an emphasis on ongoing education and offering patients the latest in technological advancements, Dr. Shapira is dedicated to the practice not only of dentistry but anti-aging medicine as well as better health, better sleep, and better lives. During the course of his 35 years of experience, Dr. Shapira has taught both TMJ treatment and dental sleep medicine around the world -- he most recently lectured in Argentina on common developmental pathways for TMJ and sleep disorders. He is doing an updated version of that lecture at the ICCMO meeting in San Diego in October 2015. He is also lecturing on Spenopalatine Ganglion Blocks for treating severe treatment resistant pain.
Dr. Shapira maintains a high standard of care and treats all of his patients like theyre members of his family. Before treatment, my TMJ and facial pain was so bad that it would hurt to talk or even chew food. With Dr Shapira's treatment and guidance, I have found freedom from my facial & jaw pain. I usually go to his clinic at Highland park which is always spotless & they take extra precautions during covid times. His staff there is super nice and very helpful.

This is hands down the best dentist I have ever found. He is the only doctor to have persuaded me against getting jaw surgery and the only one who could offer a better, gentler alternative. I'm docking a star because the office staff are not the best at getting back to patients.

We did a DNA appliance to expand my upper palate, then he put a bridge in new spaces. Everything looks very natural and not too perfect looking.

I would like to express my deep gratitude to Dr Ira Shapira as his patient and his colleague.He helped me with my dental issues more than several others and I feel great now.I'm also impressed with Dr Ira Shapira's erudition - his knowledge is much more than dentistry, but also in other medical fields like fibromyalgia, muscle disorders,sleep apnea. Dr I. Shapira is a great educator with whom I had the pleasure of running seminars and an internet journal "Sleep and Health". His warm personality and the highest standard of bedside manners should be exemplary for all medical professionals. I am strongly recommending Dr I. Shapira for all patients in need of dental care.

I came to Dr. Shapira for terrible TMJ issues and headaches. I was ready to give up and never thought any of my pain would go away. In less then 15 minutes after meeting him and an SPG block and a spray and stretch I had 90% less pain then I have in the last 3 years. Dr Shapira performs miracles!!!!

I saw Dr Shapira initially in his Gurnee office for TMJ problems and chronic Migraines. I wore a plastic appliance for several months. All of my issues with jaw locking and clicking resolved as did my daily headaches and chronic migraines. I no longer have dark circles under my eyes either. I could not afford a full mouth reconstruction but have been wearing a permanent appliance for several years on my bottom teeth..Expensive but worth it. I did have 10 veneers done and now have killer smile, partially because I am no longer in chronic pain.
