Periodontal disease is a buildup of disease-causing bacteria that eat away at your soft tissue and bone. It can cause loose teeth and it can result in other serious health conditions. Because gum disease has a direct connection to your bloodstream, the harmful bacteria travels to other systems in your body and has been found to increase your risk for a number of health issues.

Plaque and bacteria buildup around the gum line cause redness and inflammation, which is known as gingivitis. This buildup occurs when you neglect proper home care, and you might experience bleeding when you brush and floss. Gingivitis is still reversible when the irritating plaque buildup is removed from your gums.

This occurs when the bone and supporting fibers around your teeth are damaged and start to break down. Hollow areas of infection called pockets form around your teeth. You cannot clean these pockets with home care, and this allows for more and more buildup of bacteria, causing further breakdown of tissue.

In the advanced stages of gum disease, the supporting bone and fibers of your teeth are damaged further, creating deeper pockets and loose teeth. Loose teeth affect your nutrition since your diet will be limited by difficulty chewing, and they will also affect your functional bite. At this stage, you must see a periodontist.

Bad experiences with dentists had me concerned about going to a periodontist for necessary repairs. From day one of walking into Dr. Joe's office I was treated, spoken to, and handle with kindness and caring from every staff member there. And yes, I call him Dr. Joe. We would chuckle when ever I tried to say his name. He told me just call me Dr. Joe! I needed extensive work. Two teeth pulled. Bone graphing. And two implants. I do not believe I could have made it through all of it without the fantastic care and skill Dr. Joe gave me. His confidence made me feel confident. His skill is extremely impressive. He's thorough. Knows the newest techniques for your individual needs. Follow up care and home phone calls to be sure I'm doing well. What else could I say? I'm sure plenty. But I could sum everything up by telling everyone, I would not hesitate to return to Dr. Joseph Amalfitano for any of my care I made need in the future! Thank you Dr. Joe and Staff! My smile is beautiful, thanks to you!

I am going to give the first comment/rating here... it's a bit premature in that I have simply phoned the office to inquire and made a consultation appointment for this week... however, the gal that answered the phone, Rica, was absolutely proffessional as well as being very personable. She answered all my questions; was kind, patient and even funny! So, not only was she extremely friendly she knew what she was doing/talking about. After my consultation (and hopefully, procedure), I will surely come back and finish my rating. As it stands, I'm looking forward to meeting this team! I have always believed that the person that answers the phone for a service/business, is the "face" or first impression you get from and experience about that particular establishment... and I am impressed so far!
