Dr. Chandra entered dentistry as a general practitioner working in the field of dentistry for five years before pursuing a professional residency program in periodontology at the University of Pittsburgh School where she earned, in addition to her degree in dental medicine, a certification in periodontology and a Master of Dental Science degree (MDS). Dr. Chandra, a 25+ year veteran of the dental profession, has been consistently honored with the Pittsburgh Magazine Top Dentist Award for the past six years. Outside of her technical expertise, Dr. Chandra is probably best known for her congeniality, pleasing chair-side manner, and compassionate patient care.
Dr. Chandra also participates in local periodontal study clubs and is active in continuing education. She has completed advanced education at world-renowned institutions such as the Misch and Pankey Institutes. LANAP is a gentle, conservative, non-invasive method of treating gum disease without cutting, suturing or removing tissue. Using a precision laser, Dr. Chandra is able to kill up to 99% of the disease causing bacteria in the periodontal pockets. Because there is no defense against the laser, the bacteria can not adapt and avoid elimination as with anti-biotic treatment.
LANAP Laser Periodontal Therapy combines the proven methods of traditional gum surgery with the precision and benefits of laser dentistry. In addition to the additional comfort and less recovery time it provides to patients, it saves gum tissue that otherwise would be removed to treat the disease.
Because nearly all the gum tissue is saved, it ensures that there will be minimal loss of tooth and bone structure after the surgery. In fact a positive side effect of laser periodontal gum surgery is that in many cases regeneration and reattachment of the gum tissue to the tooth and bone is possible. This is never seen in non-laser methods for periodontal surgery.
During your treatment, the LANAP laser works on a specific wavelength enabling the unhealthy diseased gum tissue to be removed while leaving the healthy gum tissue intact. This means there is much less post-operative stress to the mouth.
While traditional periodontal therapy removes tissue height to reduce the pocket depths, LANAP is a regenerative procedure. This means the patient does not lose tissue volume and the bone is regenerated.
LANAP offers many benefits over traditional methods of gum disease treatment. One of the main benefits is that the procedure is now minimally invasive to the patient meaning treatment is virtually pain-free with negligible post operative discomfort.
The cost for full mouth LANAP is usually less than the cost of one dental implant with associated bone grafting to replace a lost tooth. Given that tooth loss is a typical outcome of untreated periodontal disease, an investment in saving your teeth now is well spent.
Traditionally, if you were missing a tooth or if one needed to be extracted, the healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth would be cut down and the whole thing replaced with a three-crown bridge.
Dental implants are the modern alternative. Instead of cutting down two perfectly healthy teeth, the practitioner inserts a dental post (dental implant) into the jawbone to replace your missing tooth root. This post becomes solidly fixed into your jaw (like a natural tooth root). Your general dentist then places a crown onto this artificial tooth root that looks, feels, and functions like your natural teeth.
Dental implants can now be used to anchor partial and full dentures. This prevents the slipping, irritation, and pain associated with floating partials and dentures. It also prevents the tedious removal of dentures for overnight soaking and cleaning. Dental implants also eliminate the need for dental adhesives. This allows you to enjoy eating the foods you previously avoided . With dental implants, your partials or dentures are firmly anchored to the jawbone, causing them to feel much more like natural teeth.
Natural tooth roots and dental implant posts are fixed firmly in your jawbone. When you chew, these tooth roots and posts stimulate the jawbone and prevent it from shrinking. You may have seen a person who looked prematurely old because their jawbone had shrunk after wearing floating dentures. Dental implants help preserve your jawbone and appearance.

I think why I really enjoy this place is because not ONCE did I feel like I was an inconvenience. In today's world.. that's actually really hard to feel going into certain businesses. I loved how Dr. Chandra talked TO me and not at me. She made sure I understood. She explained things to me so I could understand and not just to prove she knew what she was talking about. THIS is the kind of person I trust doing any sort of procedure. A lot of people that go to school know what they're talking about, but it takes a really special type of person to not only know things, but explain it to their patient to help them understand it as well. I'm really glad I went here, and I can't recommend enough :)

Dr. Chandra is wonderful, knowledgeable, really cares and listens to each patient and their needs. I feel well cared for by both her and the great staff! They do their best to overcome any obstacles to your treatment and health concerns. Dr. Chandra truly listened to my concerns over today's antibiotic overuse. They have been wonderful and flexible and understanding when I had to bring my baby. I highly recommend! Awesome Dr. And practice.

I have always been very nervous about dentistry in general but to have a front tooth extraction, that was really a serious concern. Dr Chandra removed all fear from me. Her gentle manor was just what I needed. Highly recommend her and her entire staff.

I was nervous about going to the Periodontist, but Dr. Chandra made me feel very comfortable and explained in detail what needed to be done. Although I took very good care of my teeth, I still got gum disease, and she explained that without the surgery, I would eventually experience bone loss. She reassured me that I wouldn't feel a thing, and she was right! During the surgery, she carried on a conversation that completely distracted me from what was going on, and I felt very at ease! I had very little to no pain after the surgery either! Everyone at the office, including Dr. Chandra is extremely kind and makes you feel like you matter. I definitely recommend them and you don't need to be afraid!!

I have been a patient of Dr. Chandra for the last 5 years. 3 extractions, 2 implants and gum laser something or other in the last 5 years, plus cleanings twice a year, I have gotten to know Dr. Chandra and her staff very well. Dr. Chandra, Elaine, Tosha and Chris always greets me with a "hello Bruce" and with a smile. Somehow Dr. Chandra has been able to create an office atmosphere of positive attitudes with a team work environment. Dr. Chandra and her entire staff, make something so scary actually something to look forward too, if that is even possible. After each extraction, she calls that evening to check in and asks "How are you Feeling?" My response each time has been "Great!" Even though she has lots of patients, she (and her Staff) make you feel special. I strongly recommend Dr. Chandra, her staff for your Periodontal needs! Bruce P.
