Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to develop in the mouth. Sometimes, people develop anywhere between one and four wisdom teeth, more than four, or none at all. Wisdom teeth have large, unpredictable roots that can damage nearby teeth. These troublesome teeth often develop during the mid to late teen years, although some patients develop them as late as their mid-twenties. Many dental professionals recommend removing wisdom teeth early to avoid the oral health complications that are often caused by wisdom teeth.

Sometimes, a wisdom tooth may only partially erupt through the gum and become trapped. This is known as impaction. Impaction refers to any tooth that is unable to fully emerge through the gums and may become tilted, twisted, or displaced as it tries to emerge.

Symptoms are not always present in the cases of impacted wisdom teeth, which is why it is important to be evaluated by your dentist during regular check-ups. If there are symptoms present, you may experience pain or swelling in the area, swollen or bleeding gums, jaw stiffness, or ongoing bad breath; you may even be able to see the tooth poking through the gum line. Oral surgeons utilize highly advanced imaging technology to determine the exact positions of wisdom teeth and present you with a plan to manage them.

Removing wisdom teeth can also leave more room in your jaw for other teeth to finish developing. Sometimes, removing these teeth can alleviate sinus issues. The most important reason to get your or your childs wisdom teeth removed is to protect your oral health. Untreated wisdom teeth can threaten nearby teeth and lead to gum disease, tooth decay, nerve damage, and more. When you have your wisdom teeth extracted, you get peace of mind, too!

First, Dr. Glosenger will administer the chosen form of anesthesia. Most patients undergo general anesthesia, allowing them to sleep comfortably and wake up when the procedure is over. Once you are comfortably sleeping, your doctor will numb the area and make an incision in the gum to expose the tooth. Large wisdom teeth may need to be sectioned into smaller pieces before they are extracted. After the tooth is removed, your doctor will stitch the incision site closed, and you will rest comfortably in our office until the anesthesia sufficiently wears off.

When you have your wisdom teeth removed, you obtain peace of mind in knowing that your oral health is taken care of. Dr. Glosenger and his team are professionals who value the oral health of all every patient, and we look forward to helping you achieve a healthy smile.

Every patient is different, but many people can expect to return to their normal routines within a week following wisdom teeth removal surgery. The instructions that we provide will help guide you after your procedure to ensure your recovery is smooth and speedy. Your recovery may be longer if you had additional procedures performed or if your surgery was extensive.

Many patients opt to undergo general anesthesia, which means that you will be completely unconscious during the procedure and wake up once its over. If you are undergoing this form of sedation, you must have a responsible adult present in the office during your procedure and afterward to drive you home and help care for you.

Due to the nature of general anesthesia, you will be comfortably asleep and will not experience any pain during the procedure. Most patients report that their comfort is well controlled after surgery. Post-operative pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications, ice packs, and making sure to follow the instructions provided by our office.

Our team believes in educating our patients. We believe that keeping patients well-informed puts them at ease about their procedures, and makes the recovery process much smoother. All of our patients are important to us, and we look forward to getting to know them all beyond their oral surgery needs. When you visit our practice, youre among friends!

Jeremiah Glosengers father was in the military, so they lived all over the country. He considers North Dakota his home and has fallen in love with the city of Minot. During this time, he was mentored by excellent faculty, including Department Chair Dr. Peter Larsen and Dr. Edwin McGlumphy, an expert prosthodontist. Dr. Glosenger gained extensive, hands-on surgical experience in both clinical and hospital-based settings and mastered the safe administration of various forms of anesthesia. Ohio State is considered one of the top anesthesia training centers in the country for oral surgery, and Dr. Glosengers feels honored to have had the opportunity to receive valuable knowledge utilizing cutting-edge technology during his residency. Here, he also gained extensive hands-on training in the placement of dental implants and how to restore full functionality to patients via implant replacement strategies.

I was supposed to get my wisdom teeth out about 8 years ago but I really didn't want to. I hate surgery and have a fear of being put under but it finally came time for me to have to get them out due to one getting an infection. Went to the consultation appointment and the team at ND oral surgery was very reassuring and answered all of my questions! The fill you with all the information on the surgery you need to know. (Complications, problems that could arise, the good about getting your wisdom teeth out, etc... they were very friendly! When it came time for surgery day they asked if I wanted a blanket or anything, talked to me through the process of putting all the monitors on my chest, arm oit, throat, etc... explaining what they were for. Didn't even feel them put the IV in my arm and then I woke up missing 4 wisdom teeth. Overall a very good experience and that's aiming from someone who is terrified of surgery and needles. Thank you Dr. Glosenger and the team at ND Oral Surgery!

Dr. Glosenger removed my wisdom teeth about 6 years ago when I was in my early 30s. Obviously this is not an ideal age for this surgery but they were problematic and I wanted them out. I understood the risks were higher given my age and therefore maturity of the teeth, however, he removed all four without a prior consultation. Actually, no. I did have a "consultation" which consisted of a quick chat beforehand when I showed up for surgery. That surgery caused me permanent nerve damage to one quadrant of my mouth leaving me completely numb and incredibly uncomfortable ever since and for the rest of my life. When I came for a second follow-up after expressing numbness at my first one, he played dumb like he had no clue what I was talking about and showed no remorse or support, much less compassion for the irreparable damage he caused me outside of mentioning a nerve repair specialist somewhere in the south. 0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND

I have had two extractions with bone grafts for an implant and my husband has had one and we are so grateful for their professionalism and excellent work. If you've ever had tooth pain, you will know the relief of having the rotten thing out of your head, but it is still a scary thing. Dr. Glossinger and his staff make it quick and painless. I was out for my surgery and when I woke up I wasn't even sore. A bit of soreness after 24 hrs., But not at all what I would except for the trauma my mouth experienced. Excellent experience!
