Known for his exceptional skills with helping patients attain optimal oral health, Dr. Brian Schabel is dedicated to providing gentle orthodontic care that creates amazing smiles and beautifully straight teeth with proper function. As a father, he understands how to communicate with his younger patients; he seeks to engage them in the treatment process and educate them about the transformation happening in their mouth.
Raised in Santa Cruz, Dr. Schabel attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a concentration in anatomy and physiology. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was class president and honored with the Board of Counselors Endowed Scholarship and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Award.
Dr. Schabel then undertook a three-year residency in the distinguished Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he received his Master of Science degree. His research interests include smile and facial aesthetics, and four manuscripts based on his masters thesis, Orthodontic Esthetics: A Systematic Evaluation of the Smile, have been published in prominent international orthodontic journals.
In order to stay abreast of the constant changes in orthodontic technologies and treatment methodologies, Dr. Schabel regularly hosts and attends training and continuing education seminars. He is also the co-founder of the Paradigm Orthodontic Study Club. In addition, he is an active member of several professional organizations, including:
Dr. Schabels wife, Dr. Vivian Chan, is also his partner in the North Coast Orthodontics practice. They live in Capitola with their two sons and a rambunctious boxer, Ronan all of whom keep them active, whether they like it or not.
In addition to being an avid fan of Michigan football and UCLA basketball, Dr. Schabel enjoys mountain biking, golfing, snowboarding, and surfing. He has completed several triathlons, including the California half-Ironman, and was a top three age group finisher at the Wildflower Triathlon and a top 50 finisher in the Los Angeles Marathon.
A widely respected orthodontic professional, Dr. Vivian Chan is committed to delivering compassionate, effective orthodontic care that enhances her patients oral health and creates beautiful smiles. She connects strongly with her patients and their families, and helps them understand how their lives are improved as a result of straight teeth and a proper bite, not to mention their wonderful new confidence and smile.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Dr. Chan received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Calgary, and then completed a Master of Science degree in neuroscience. At New York University, she graduated at the top of her class, was inducted into a national dental honor society, and was awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
Dr. Chan subsequently moved to Ann Arbor, where she received her Master of Science from the world-renowned Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan. Her thesis, The Role of Female Reproductive Hormones in the Etiopathogenesis of Temporomandibular Joint Disease in Women, was presented at the American Association of Orthodontists International Conference in 2007. She has been the recipient of numerous prestigious scholarships and awards.
Dr. Chan is committed to furthering her expertise in orthodontics. She attends continuing education seminars and, along with Dr. Schabel, hosts courses on a variety of topics related to treatment timing in orthodontics, Invisalign, and inter-disciplinary orthodontic treatment. She is also an active member of many professional organizations, including:
Married to Dr. Brian Schabel, and a partner with him in the North Coast Orthodontics practice, Dr. Chan shares their home with two sons and a boxer named Ronan, who has extended her puppyhood far beyond her first few years.
Dr. Chan speaks English, French, and Chinese (Mandarin and basic Cantonese), and has started learning Spanish as well. An accomplished pianist, she began playing at age eight and went on to receive her performers degree from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She enjoys being active, so Dr. Chan can often be found running and mountain biking. Shes also a lover of great food.

We were on vacation in Aptos, and my daughter's bracket and wire came loose, and was causing her a lot of discomfort. Even though we were not her full-time patient, Dr. Chan met us on a Sunday and adjusted the wires and installed a bracket. She was very professional and patient. We really appreciated it! If we lived in the Santa Cruz area, she would definitely be our orthodontist!

I appreciate my orthodontists so much decided to write this review. I'm gonna start with the bad experiences first but let me clarify that it was Western Dental. I was with them for i don't even know 5 plus years, AND LET ME TELL YOU NOTHING WAS DONE JUST A LOTTA MONEY INFESTED. Felt like we got robbed basically because nothing was correct in my mouth, we felt like cattle being in their office, we never felt like we had any real progress done to my mouth. To us when we left we always felt like nothing really was progressing. Always the same thing being done and different doctors that didn't even know what was going on with my mouth sometimes, scary right? they never talked to you like you were humans, always frowns like they never wanted to be there, rushed everything they did just to get you out of there.. well that's what it felt like. But hey this review isn't about them it's about North Coast, NOW LET ME TELL YOU WHEN I SAY ITS THE BEST EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD WITH A ORTHODONTIST. There's never a dull moment in there, all the doctors and nurses always have a smile on their face, always tryin to engage with you, plus at the same time they are doing what they are suppose to be doing in you're mouth. We are always seeing progress! What they promise you see. Always making sure the braces are never hurting or bothering me. Gentle but not too gentle where they can't get anything done. Always has good vibes and they are always happy to work on you. You feel like you are their only patient when you're in there. Always the best experience when we enter and always feeling that progress is being made when we leave. We love The husband and wife vibe, always feels like a family in there and we are apart of it. WE LOVE YOU NORTH COAST, if you are looking for a good family friendly orthodontist, please don't look anywhere or think twice it's worth it.

All three of my daughters have been treated by North Coast over the past 7 years and the youngest just got her braces off! Is is with mixed emotions that this amazing journey is coming to an end as I have watched my little girls become confident teens with the most beautiful smiles I could imagine. Our experience with this office has been nothing short of amazing. Not only are Dr. Chan & Dr. Schabel exceptional at what they do, Dr. Chan has been an amazing role model to my girls. She is kind, compassionate, humble, and brilliant - everything a parent tries to instill in their daughters. It's no surprise that 2 of my girls want to be orthodontists now. Thank you for everything you all have done for our family over the years!

From the first to almost the last appointment (my son just got his braces off!), we have had excellent service and prompt appointments and most importantly, because of Dr. Schabel my son has kept all 14 teeth on the top and bottom, when all of the other "reputable and recommended" orthodontist would have just pulled them or used outdated methods to preserve them (like drilling into the roof of his mouth). Dr. Schabel used a more modern expander so he didn't have to have less teeth, which will help preserve his jaw line into old age. So thankful for the excellent service and we have enjoyed the beautiful office, which makes the visits always pleasant. Thank you North Coast Orthodontics!

The care provided by Dr. Schabel and Dr. Chan is unquestionably the very best. Their office does not provide assembly line service--Dr. Schabel is always available to answer questions and explain what he is doing and why. He is never "too busy" to talk to his patients or family members. He is a perfectionist and is meticulous in his work, and the results are outstanding. Both of my children and I have been his patients. We could not be happier with the treatment we received. I would recommend North Coast Orthodontics to everyone.
