One of the leading causes of gum disease is tooth loss. There are two main stages of gum disease, and if discovered and treated in the first stage, the problems you are experiencing can be reversed and tooth loss can be prevented.

In the early stage of gum disease, the soft tissue of the gums will be affected and there may be little to no discomfort. Although it is not painful, it is important to have your gums checked on a regular basis to ensure you do not reach stage two.

The second and more advanced stage of gum disease is known as periodontitis. If you reach this stage, the health of your gums will be affected, and the bone structure of the teeth will be compromised.

Gingivitis occurs when there is a buildup of bacteria around the gums. Inflammation is typical and you will notice the gums becoming red or swollen. If your gums bleed while you are brushing your teeth, this is a good indicator of having gingivitis.

The gums become inflamed and begin to pull away from the teeth. This pulling away forms a space, or pocket, where food, bacteria and plaque begin to build. This can create an infection and cause damage to the bone.

Once things reach the advanced stage, teeth can be lost, and painful abscesses can begin to form. It is important to take extra care of your teeth, even if you are in the beginning or moderate stages, so this does not occur.

Dr. Lee , as always is so great at addressing your concerns. In this case I'd been having major pain and he was able to determine which tooth it was and immediately referred me to another dentist to be evaluated for a root canal and urged me to try to call and get an appointment for that day. As it turned out I will be seen the next day(a Saturday).

This was my 1st visit to Newtown Smile Dentistry. Dr Lee spent a long time discussing my dental needs and explaining the care plan we would follow in the future. As a nurse practitioner, this is the way I spoke with my patients to teach them way to prevent medical crises or problems. I am going to love it here as a dental patient! Nancy the NP

extraction/surgery was lengthy but well-controlled pain and discomfort...Dr. Lee explained everything to my satisfaction...not sure what current policy/practices is/are, but no mention or offer of post-visit pain meds and/or antibiotics (which turned out I needed) was given...(perhaps a printed handout?)
