A pedodontist is a dentist who has received advanced specialty training in meeting the dental needs of children from infancy to adolescence. Pedodontists, also referred to as pediatric dentists, during the course of their post graduate training extensively study child development and psychology, behavior management, caring for children with special needs, methods of handling oral/facial trauma, anesthesia and sedation methods, as well as develop a comprehensive understanding of facial growth and dental development. In addition to all of this, pedodontists acquire the hands-on clinical skills to successfully treat the dental needs of every child at every stage of development. Pedodontists truly enjoy working with children and strive to make each of their dental care experiences a positive one.

Even before your child is born, their first set of teeth is already forming. In fact, before they are a year old their new teeth will start to appear in their mouth. This is why maintaining their oral health becomes such an important consideration at such an early point in their lives. According to the American Dental Association parents are advised to have their baby see the dentist around the time of their first birthday.

Your babys first teeth will start to appear in the 6 to 12 month range. While this is an extraordinary milestone, you need to be aware that your baby may find the experience a little bit uncomfortable. Teething can make them feel irritable. They may be fussy, have trouble sleeping, not want to eat, and be drooling quite a bit. While you are powerless to speed up the process of teething, there are a few things that you can do to soothe your baby as their new teeth are erupting into place. Common approaches to helping your baby feel more comfortable while getting their new teeth include teething rings or a cold spoon or moist gauze rubbed over their gums. Even for these few new teeth, it is important to establish an oral healthcare regimen for your baby. For information on when your babys first set of teeth will erupt into place, consult this time line from the American Dental Association.

Some children persist in sucking their thumbs or fingers beyond their preschool years. For these children the activity continues to be a source of comfort, relaxation, and security. It may even help them fall asleep at night. However, it is important as parents to be aware that if your childs thumb or finger sucking habit is still present when their permanent teeth come in, there is a greater chance of developing a bad bite. This means that if the activity has not ceased by the age of five or six years, you need to constructively and gently help your child stop the habit. It is also a good idea to have a comprehensive evaluation at this time. Your pedodontist can assess if there are any habit related alterations to the alignment of your childs teeth or jaws, or if it is affecting their speech or swallowing patterns. They can also discuss habit control strategies with you, as well as follow your childs bite and facial development as they grow. If there are recommendations that interceptive appliances or corrective orthodontic care is required, the pedodontist will discuss these with you.

A great facility for taking care of kids dental health. The entire team of hygienists and front office staff are very friendly and experienced in taking care of children and their dental needs. The office is well suited to comfort children of all ages. Dr. Lopez has a friendly and calm demeanor and explains everything related to your kid's dental hygiene. Highly recommended.

Dr. Lopez was so amazing. We thought we were going to have to come back for a second appointment but he was able to take care of the treatment in one visit.

My three children have been patients of Dr. Lopez for many years as they are now almost 18 years old. I cannot say enough about what an outstanding, patient and caring dentist he has been! I highly recommend him for all pediatric dental needs.

We have been seeing Dr. Lopez & team at NPD since 2007. My older daughter "graduated" from this office last year and that was bitter sweet. Luckily I still have 3 more years with my youngest, who started seeing Dr. Lopez since she was 1! Dr. Lopez really treats his patients likes his own children. He is very thorough and patient when he speaks with the parents. And his team is very professional and know how to communicate and connect with their patients. A few of the technicians, e.g. Ms Sonia, have been there since we started going there! So you know they love their work and will take care of your children.

Dr. Lopez is a conservative dentist which always gives me faith that he's only doing necessary work on my kids. We've been using NPD for 8 years. The kids are happy to go there and the office is cool w movies and surf themed art. The hygienists smile and relax the kids. The front office is flexible and friendly. Great dental office!

We LOVE NPD! We've been seeing Dr. Maldonado and Dr. Lopez for about 5 years -- after going to the for a second opinion when another doctor recommended baby dentures for my son's front 5 teeth (weak enamel + juice). Dr. Lopez recommended another plan and too great care of my 2-year-old. Even though we've moved toNorth Orange County, we still go down to Costa Mesa because they're there BEST dentists around. So knowledgeable, and willing to take the time to explain anything. Kind, caring staff who are great with kids; beautiful new office that's inviting for children -- no "scary" trips to the dentist :) I recommend them to anyone looking for a pediatric dentist! My son LOVES going to the dentist now!

I contacted Dr. Lopez at NPD as a new (desperate) patient who had just moved to town. This was while quarantine and social distancing orders were in affect. I discovered an abscess above a dead tooth that my 3 year old son had previously injured. He needed to have it pulled asap. I contacted Dr. Lopez on his direct line provided on the website and got in touch with him within the hour. He talked me through our options in a very clear and detailed way. We decided together to attempt to extract the tooth with nitrous (laughing gas) and local anesthetic alone. Setting the appointment within days, paperwork etc was all very easy. Day of the appointment I was obviously very nervous, hoping that this wouldn't turn into a traumatic experience for my son. Dr. Lopez and his dental assistant welcomed us into the office alone. Both with masks and all necessary PPE on. Us as well. We walked out 40 minutes later without a single tear being shed. Not a single whine or sound of discomfort was heard from a boy who cried through his last dental exam a few months prior. They were so kind, welcoming, calming, and professional. The dental assistant rubbed his arms, and spoke to him in a soothing voice as he received two injections. The doctor explained everything he was doing to him, in a soft kind tone while he watched Netflix on the tv above him in the ceiling. This was an experience I was absolutely dreading and it turned out to be completely pain-free. For my son most importantly, but for me too. He also called us later that day to check in to see how he was doing and let us know what to expect moving forward. Could not ask for more from someone taking care of my child. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I look forward to the next (routine) appointment!
