After 19 years, I have come to a difficult decision to step away from my dental practice and from Blacksburg. My family and I have lived in Blacksburg for 19 years. I initially practiced in Christiansburg and then opened New River Valley Dental 12 years ago, in 2007. I have enjoyed treating each and every one of you. I have treated up to three generations of some families and watched young patients grow into adulthood. It is very hard to say goodbye. Now that my children are college aged and out of the house, my husband and I will be moving further south to be close to more urban amenities.
To maintain the continuing care of my wonderful patients, I met with 7 candidates until I found Dr. Benjamin Matthews. He is a caring, calm, and meticulous dentist very much like myself. Dr. Matthews repaired a defective filling on me recently and handled the procedure in a way that confirmed my confidence in his abilities. He is thorough practical and empathetic. His goal is to continue the quality of care for which you have shown me your loyalty over these many years.
His education is impressive. Dr. Matthews graduated from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. He has expanded his creative focus and sought additional training through organizations such as the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and numerous additional continuing dental education courses.
Although natives of Utah, Dr. Matthews, his wife Melanie, and their son Rivers have chosen to leave the west for the scenic beauty of the New River Valley. I am so appreciative of your trust and support and know in my heart that you will extend this same trust and support to Dr. Matthews. I am extremely grateful for the many relationships that I have formed through the years with my many wonderful patients.
To ensure a smooth transition, I plan to maintain a presence at the office for a few weeks, helping in any way that I can. I am confident that you will be well cared for and pleased with Dr. Matthews.
Dr. Matthews regularly seeks out advanced continuing education, and has received additional training and certifications in many aspects of dentistry including: Endodontics, Implant Dentistry, Full Mouth Reconstruction, Invisalign, and Airway Management.
Dr. Matthews has used his skills to participate in Refugee Clinics, Missions of Mercy, and Give Kids a Smile programs. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Southwest Virginia Dental Society.
Dr. Matthews enjoys visiting with patients, and works to understand each one individually. Dr. Matthews spends his free time cycling and woodworking with hand tools. He and his beautiful wife, Melanie, are blessed with an 11 year-old son, Rivers.
My family and I love calling Blacksburg home. Our summer evenings are spent enjoying the Huckleberry trail, while our weekends are often spent exploring the glorious Cascades or a member of the notorious Triple Crown. We love frequenting the farmers market and enjoy a flick at the Lyric from time to time.
I grew up in the Carolinas prior to attending Brigham Young University - Hawaii. In Hawaii, I met my wonderful wife, Melanie. We have been blessed with one son, Rivers, who has become an avid mountain biker at Pandas Pond. Rivers loves Virginia's wildlife and takes every opportunity to feed the giant turtles, climb the surrounding trees, and research the various bugs he discovers.
While attending the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, I pursued additional training beyond the standard curriculum. These involved various branches of dentistry such as: pediatrics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral medicine.
After graduation, I had the opportunity to work in a small coal mining community in Utah. During that time, I continued my pursuit of clinical expertise through a variety of continuing education courses including: Endodontics, Implant Dentistry, Invisalign, Full Mouth Reconstruction, and Airway Management. This further education gives me the capacity to treat complex dental cases, utilizing the best technology and specialty care available.
I promise to take the time to genuinely understand the concerns and needs of each patient. By treating you with integrity and skill, we will provide the highest standard of care, in a calm and gentle environment.

The staff here are very professional and very compassionate. I came in super nervous, but had a great experience despite the work being done. They made sure I was comfortable, and replaced my crowns without any problems. Every time I come here I feel even better about my experience. Thank you NRV Dental!

Problem with getting money from them after paying for services up front. They keep denying that insurance paid anything when we have dates that checks were sent to provider.

Dr. Mathews is an excellent dentist! What is amazing is that his staff his superb.....from the hygienist to everyone who works here............it is very clear that they take great pride in their work. I consider myself very luck to have found Dr. Mathews and staff.

Dr. Matthews is wonderful! I have had cleanings, wisdom teeth extractions, and fillings at this office. Every visit is so nice and relaxing. The front desk staff are caring and knowledgeable. I have had Lynn assist Dr. Matthews with me twice and her presence is so comforting. I feel like family there. They are also very efficient and excellent with communicating. They had to reschedule me because of inclement weather and fit me in two days later! They were also quick with bringing me in when I was having some pain after wisdom teeth extractions.

As a mother of four children, finding a dentist to meet all of their needs can be difficult. Dr. Matthews and his staff have gone above and beyond to make my children feel comfortable as well as giving them exceptional care. I would highly recommend them to anyone searching for dental care for their family.

I had a great experience at New River Valley Dental. Dr. Matthews is very nice and explains everything clearly. Atiya and Michelle are very experienced and experts at dental cleaning, I didn't feel any pain. I'm so relieved to have found such a wonderful dental clinic after moving to Blacksburg. So glad I chose to visit New River Valley Dental. The staff is extremely friendly, caring, and kind. They managed to keep me laughing through a procedure of having 3 fillings done, and made it a pleasant experience. I was super impressed with Dr. Matthews and his treatment plan for a tooth of mine that could have easily been a root canal. Instead of going straight to such an invasive procedure, he exercised skill and knowledge to try to save my tooth. As long as we're living in Christiansburg, I'll keep coming back to this practice.

I cannot say enough positive things about this dentist & ALL the wonderful staff! I have some anxiety around the dentist & put off going (for far too long!), and everyone at the practice made me feel comfortable. They never shame poor dental behavior, only make encouraging suggestions. Some dental issues I've had for all of my adulthood are finally improving. The dental hygienists are kind and careful. Yes, there's still scraping and drilling; it is after all a dental office. BUT the care they offer is truly superb. For example, one time when I receiving treatment I began to experience some discomfort-- not pain-- and THEY stopped. They saw me subtly squeezing my hands & knew something wasn't right. So they administered more numbing medicine & continued. Often times I've felt it's up to me to tough it out or speak up, but not here and not with Dr. Matthews. They have raised my bar for dental care!

Dr. Matthews fit me in last year at the start of quarantine as a new patient when I broke a tooth. Since then they've taken care of my teeth and gone above and beyond what I've ever expected during my appointments to make sure I'm comfortable and to help me with my dental care. Truly the best type of practice I've ever been to and I'm lucky to have found them!

I gave them 5 stars but I didn't want to.... I WANT TO GIVE THEM INFINITE STARS. Seriously we LOVE Dr. Matthews and his band of exemplary helpers. This is a bit embarrassing, but.... my dental journey was: having years of bad hygiene, and then *being judged by other dentists and hygienists*, which made for more shame and then, an even worse dental regimen which meant not wanting to deal, then declining spiral of oral health, etc. etc. etc.... Essentially: I showed up to Dr. Matthews's office with an unmitigated mouthful of disaster, pain, and shame. Fast-forward about a year (I had *SO MUCH WORK TO BE DONE*) and, as the result of Dr. Matthews's and staff's endlessly patient, kind, empathetic, brilliantly competent dentistry, and I can now ... actually... joyfullly ... *SMILE*. My teeth look and feel AWESOME. Basically, if Dr. Matthews is not your #1 choice for dentistry, it will be at your peril. WE LOVE DOCTOR MATTHEWS AND HIS STAFF.

Most of us don't like to go to the dentist. Fortunately for me, the team at NRV Dental makes it as painless and pleasant as possible! The staff is super friendly, always willing to go out of their way to accommodate you and try to make sure you are comfortable with every procedure they perform. I love the team at NRV!
