Dr. Buyerhas degrees from the Citadel, DDS from Indiana University, Post-doctoral Masters in Public Health from the University of South Carolina, Post-doctoral Masters in Science from the Medical College of Georgia and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. Colonel (Retired) Buyer served in the US Army from 1975-2008 where he was a Dean to two general dentistry residency programs. He is a board certified periodontist and a member of numerous professional organizations. He is a full scope periodontist with an exceptional reputation for managing complex anterior dental implants cases in Southwest Virginia. Dr. Buyer is part time faculty in Periodontology and Dental Implantology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. Dr. Buyer opened New River Periodontics and Dental Implant Center in the New River Valley area in 2009. The practice has expanded to a second location in the Roanoke and Salem.
Dr. John Lentz received his BS from Auburn University and DDS from the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the US Navy from 1975-1978 with sea duty aboard the Nimitz. He left the Navy for his periodontal training at The Medical College of Virginia. He is adjunct professor at Wytheville Community College. He is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and is past presidents of the Virginia Society of Periodontology and Southwest Virginia Dental Society. He also serves as an officer on numerous boards and foundations. Dr. Lentz brings over 35 years of experience. He is a full scope periodontist that excels in cases soft tissue management and periodontal plastic surgery.

Our patient reception area offers a comfortable atmosphere complete with a refreshment station, a computer to access the internet and WiFi. Our state-of-the-art surgical suite is set up to provide exceptional care while having periodontal surgery or placing dental implants.

I was referred here by my dentist to investigate a potential dental implant I needed. When I walked into the building I noticed there was a sign posted on the front door stating one MUST wear a mask to enter the building. That's good, considering COVID cases are nearly at all-time highs right now. However, when I arrived at the front desk I noticed that not a single one of the four employees behind the desk was wearing a mask. After greeting me and handing me some paperwork, I asked one if the staff at the office were wearing masks. I received a curt "What?" in reply, as if I had asked something that personally offended her. When I repeated my question I was told that everyone in the back was wearing a mask. A bit later I was taken back to a room and told the doctor would be in shortly. Just after I started to hear repeated coughing. They were not dry coughs; they sounded like wet, productive coughs from someone with a cold. I turned around and discovered an employee with burgundy scrubs seated at a desk just outside the room. Her surgical mask was fully around her chin, exposing both her nose and her mouth, as she was having this coughing fit. At this point I left the office without seeing the doctor. Perhaps Dr. Buyer is competent, but I felt absolutely unsafe in his office. They are not following the guidelines posted on their own door, let alone CDC guidelines.

Dr. Lentz is absolutely wonderful. My eleven year daughter went to him to have gum grafts done and We couldn't have asked for a better outcome and no pain at all. Thank you so much for treating her so great!

Dr. Buyer and staff are professional and made sure I was comfortable. I am a nervous dental patient. I have been there several times and every time I had a positive experience. I have been in healthcare for 25 years and was truly impressed by his office and consideration for the patient. All his staff are excellent. When you walk in the door, the office environment is inviting and peaceful. The person who files insurance has certainly gone out of her way to be helpful. Dr. Buyer offers to explain everything as he is doing, it if the patient wants to know. Following my procedure his assistant explained everything I was supposed to do at home. Thanks for the great care!
