In March 1951, a small group of men gathered together to create a dental study club that would become the Academy of General Dentistry. At the time, good lectures were scarce, hands-on courses were impossible to find and existing study clubs were not meeting the needs of the greater dental population. These men were united by a common goal of improving quality care through lifelong learning.
The organizations founders never could have anticipated that the Academy would experience the growth and widespread recognition that has become its hallmarks: Currently, the Academy has 37,000 members from the United States and Canada.
