February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Five stars for sure! I would have missed my appointment if Abdullah had not called to make sure I was coming for my appointment. I had lost track of time, but Abdullah saved the day. He is also a very through dental hygienist and always has good advice for better dental care. I know I am getting excellent dental care!

Sadly after 35 years (and a 5 year break from a dentist) I got news that two of my teeth had cavities. I had to have one filling retouched but no problems since! I appreciate the friendliness of Dr.Powell and staff. They are informative and do their best to be quick and efficient. Edit: After another visit I was told I suddenly had 7 more cavities I figured I would get a second opinion before doing so much dental work. Second opinion else where did not find 7 cavities but instead one and one area of concern. While Dr. Powell and staff are great and I never have had an issue I've discontinued going to Mortenson and am now going to Dr. Corey Stith. Its been 4 years and those 6 other cavities still haven't actually manifested. Glad I got a second opinion. Still happy enough with prior experience with Mortenson but Im not as trustful since that last experience there.

Sadie was my hygienist today and she did an amazing job! Everyone at this practice strives to make you feel comfortable. I certainly recommend Mortenson Dental to everyone. Another great job by the Mortenson Dental staff! If you need a dentist, go see Dr. Powell at the Versailles office.

I was an excruciating pain all weekend over a tooth that needed to be extracted and scheduled an appointment this morning at this Wonderful place. They took me in 1st thing this morning, because it was an emergency with my pain level, and got me fixed up. The ladies there were so kind and nice and helpful and helped me a lot with insurance issues and like I said, Took care of my pain. They do judt about anything you can think of there and are so very friendly, clean, respectful and awesome! I definitely recommend this place and if you're looking for a new dentist, don't hesitate to go here. I know going to the Dentist isn't fun, but im so happy and thankful to have gone there this morning and meeting those kind people there that literally went out of their ways to help me. I changed my review from one star to four. Because I realized some things can happen with dental work. When I called and described what was going on. They were very polite and called in the meds I needed very fast. Within an hour I had them. The next day I was starting to get better. Thanks.

I hadn't been to the dentist in 20+ years due to a incident that occurred when I was younger. But my experience today was Excellent! Karen, my hygienist, explained everything to me and kept encouraging me. I went in terrified, but came out with a different perspective. Thank you for making my visit relaxing!

Very friendly staff! Dr. Powell is wonderful and really makes you feel comfortable. I love that she's always singing, it was very comforting as she worked on my teeth. It helped distract from the drilling sounds.
